This is one for the “too stupid to survive” files: U.S. Army Labeled Evangelicals, Catholics as Examples of Religious Extremism. When I first saw the headline, I assumed it must all be a little less obviously bone-crushingly stupid or at any rate more nuanced once you got into the story. But I invite you to look at the accompanying poster for the Equal Opportunity training brief issued by the Army Reserve in Pennsylvania. It lists “extremist” groups, starting with “Evangelical Christianity” at Number One, “Al Quaeda” (misspelled under any Roman rendering of Arabic) at Number

I work at a large state univeristy. I was on a search committee once, to hire a new instructor. I had to go to the Equal Opportunity Office to be briefed on how to select a suitable candidate. As I went through the pile of resumes, eliminating some, keeping others, I was to write a brief explanation every time I eliminated a "minority or a woman." the EOO itself was staffed by eight black women and one white womanhaps the least diverse organization on campus. On a happier note, a colleague who taught Freshman English Comp, when doing the end of semester teacher evals said, "Look at item #8...´Teacher treated minorities and women fairly.´ I apologize to those in the class who are not women or minorities for not being singled out for special treatment. None of you have to answer #8 if you don´t want to.´"

But the poster on ´religious extremism´ is the worst example of how this kind of stupidity can mestastisize.

There will soon be more Christians in China than in the USA.

It must be all that religious tolerance there.

House Republican pushing mileage tax to bolster
Transportation funds; Update: Or did he?

Over the last few years, we’ve seen Democrats raise the idea of adding a new revenue source to supplement the gas tax, as revenues have declined from this stream due to increased fuel efficiency thanks to mandates to that effect imposed by Congress. One bad idea that never seems to die is a mileage tax, which would force Americans to track their travel — or have government do it for them. That idea got shelved along with the Democratic House majority in 2011, but now it’s crept across the aisle (via Instapundit): House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chairman Bill Shuster said

President Obama has kept up with the tradition of hosting a National Prayer Breakfast by inviting guests from 130 nations and a collection of Congressmen and Senators. One of the most distinctive guests was not in politics at all, however, as professional surfer Bethany Hamilton addressed the crowd at the Washington Hilton Thursday morning. The 23-year-old, who survived a shark attack in 2003 where she lost her left arm, read two passages from the New Testament and talked about the inspiration she received to thrive in spite of her injury. The non-denominational gathering focused on the issue religious freedom and the President discussed

Although unexpected, the unraveling of the Affordable Care Act may deliver a mortal blow to liberalism. At the very least, it presents a momentous opportunity for a majority of the American people to recognize that dependence on unaccountable government bureaucracies is a loser´s wager. Since failure is often the best teacher, the ObamaCare fiasco may well catalyze a broad renaissance of appreciation for the power and virtue of self-reliance and choice that only the free market provides. The fact that ObamaCare is prompting early retirement among doctors and reduced medical school applications, while also creating 16,500 new IRS enforcement agents, reveals just how

Being arrested in Chicago for, say, drug possession or assault gets you sent to the Cook County Jail to be fingerprinted, photographed and X-rayed. You’ll also get help applying for health insurance. At least six states and counties from Maryland to Oregon’s Multnomah are getting inmates coverage under Obamacare and its expansion of Medicaid, the federal and state health-care program for the poor. The fledgling movement would shift to the federal government some of the more than $6.5 billion in annual state costs for treating prisoners. Proponents say it also will make recidivism rarer, because inmates released with coverage are more

The Congressional Budget Office estimated on Tuesday that the Affordable Care Act will reduce the number of full-time workers by 2.5 million over the next decade. That is mostly a good thing, a liberating result of the law. Of course, Republicans immediately tried to brand the findings as “devastating” and stark evidence of President Obama’s health care reform as a failure and a job killer. It is no such thing. (SNIP) The new law will free people, young and old, to pursue careers or retirement without having to worry about health coverage.

The Affordable Care Act, aka ObamaCare, became law almost four years ago. It became operational last Oct. 1. Yesterday, Feb. 4, 2014, the ACA may well have been dealt its death blow. The Congressional Budget Office released a major study of the government’s budget and its effect on the overall economy over the next 10 years. In dull bureaucratic language, it delivers a devastating analysis of the inefficiencies, ineffectualities and problematic social costs of ObamaCare. The one-two punch: Virtually as many Americans will lack health coverage in 10 years as before the law was passed — but 2 million fewer

Mr. Obama wants Americans to believe that the targeting resulted from the confusing tax law governing nonprofits, which he says was "difficult" to interpret and resulted in mere "bureaucratic" mistakes. The White House and congressional Democrats tried to limit the fallout Wednesday from the politically damaging conclusion in a Congressional Budget Office report that the Obamacare entitlement creates a major incentive for some people not to work. While some critics focused on a finding by the CBO that Obamacare will result in 2.5 million fewer workers over a decade, conservatives said the bigger fundamental issue highlighted in the report is one familiar to the welfare state — that taxpayer-funded government subsidies provide disincentives for full-time work. “People used to be stuck in jobs because they needed the health insurance,” said
