How do you feel walking
alone at night? A list of the
scariest--and safest—cities

Investor´s Business Daily, by Andrew Malcolm

Original Article

Posted By:SurferLad, 4/8/2013 9:23:29 AM

It´s a good thing this column is available online, so that residents of Memphis, New Orleans and Riverside, California can learn how unsafe their city is without having to venture outside. Those are the bottom three metropolitan areas where residents said they felt least safe walking alone at night in their neighborhood. From the safety of their little work cubicles somewhere, the number gnomes over at the Gallup organization have been accumulating data on perceived human well-being as part of their polling calls on many subjects. From that data comes the 50 most and least safe cities.

I grew up in Riverside. It was one of the loveliest, friendliest cities in California, rivaling Santa Barbara for its beauty.

Then came the "southern" influx in the 70´s...

I used to live in Memphis. I resided on the eastern edge of the city where it was considered very safe. However, there are sections of that city you don´t want to go into during the daytime, much less after dark, so, yeah, I can see Memphis being ranked low, though I would expect that certain places like Chicago are actually much more dangerous.

Not the scariest and safest, but the percentages of those who FEEL safe in those cities.

Have a look at Chicago´s position on the list and then consider what we know.

This is Gallup junk.

There is a major flaw in this report. The article measures whether residents feel they are safe or endangered, and not whether they actually are by some objective measure. If you have gotten used to the violence in cities like Chicago, you may not react to real danger, while a rare purse snatching in Amarillo may have all of its residents on edge.

Same thing for Houston-Sugarland-Baytown, that area is so huge it is bigger than Rhode Island. With TX as a right to carry, everyone is pretty safe walking around, this poll is junk.

I was glad to see Seattle on the list of safest cities, but the ranking would have been a lot higher if Tacoma hadn´t been added. Tacoma isn´t safe to walk even in the daytime. Don´t know why it was anyway. Tacoma is 30 miles south of Seattle.

I´m with #2 on this one. I´m from Memphis and knowing the city like I do, I´ve no idea how only 40% feel unsafe on those streets (should be closer to 80). Makes me wonder where and when this survey was taken.

Maybe they mistook Germantown and Colliverville for the city.

Larry Elder compared and quoted some murder rates in the sprawling Los Angeles area, a few years back when LA was taking a kicking in the media--as if it was a single place. Most communities had a murder rate very similar to oh-so-sophisticated European cities. Then, when you look at South Central, where gangs are devoted to killing one another, the murder rate compares to Bogata Columbia.

What #5 said. I´m a city kid, grew up in LA and almost feel unsafe in a City if there are lots of people around. My wife is from a small town and is routinely nervous walking late at night, even on a lighted street from a theater to our car. So, as noted, it´s a matter of perspective and what you´re used to.

I live in Aurora and I can promise you, that while there are PARTS of Aurora that are perfectly fine, there are areas up near a street called Colfax which would be the place to go if you are looking for a hooker or a drug dealer and would NOT be considered safe at any time of the day or night.

Some of it may be due to geography. I grew up in New Orleans and there were no good or bad side of the tracks like in other cities. Some of the wealthiest areas were interspersed very nearby with some of the seediest.

Acknowledgment from the podium. It´s one of the most powerful public tools available to any American politician. And it´s free. Thank their good friend so-and-so in front of a large crowd. It´s a predictable staple of Barack Obama´s repetitive rhetoric nowadays. [Snip] So, it was unusually revealing Tuesday afternoon when an ebullient Obama launched his ObamaCare ´enrollment´ victory lap with not one single acknowledgment. He was not going to share this self-congratulatory moment with anyone.

The Obama administration today will tout impressive enrollment numbers for ObamaCare with the confident precision that can only come from the knowledge that no one else is counting. No one else can count the numbers. Because the Obama administration controls access to all the numbers. It´s probably a coincidence, but that is exactly the way votes are counted by the Chicago Democratic machine. And if the Obama crowd is strutting for the media over enrollment numbers, Americans aren´t hearing more about his growing list of foreign policy embarrassments.

Late-night comedians and their writers pounce on the day´s news as their primary source to twist and distort into laughs. Russia, of course, remains a hot item following the "uncontested arrival" of its troops in Crimea. Reflecting the diminished approval of President Obama, the late-night shows have been aiming their laughs at him more. Even Jimmy Fallon, who kicked off his Jay Leno replacement tour with a Michelle Obama interview, has aimed some laughs at his presidential pal. Although he quickly returns with something barbed at Republicans.

Good morning. I’m Congresswoman Jackie Walorski. Today, I’m calling on President Obama — the Commander-in-Chief of our Armed Forces — to support H.R. 4031, the VA Management Accountability Act. I do so as a member of the House Veterans Affairs Committee. President Obama, whose poll approval numbers hover weakly around 40% among Americans, met Thursday with Pope Francis, whose approval numbers among the same people are 76%. Now, you know why the Chicago Democrat sought the meeting. The two leaders exchanged gifts. The Vicar of Christ gave the ex-state senator a copy of his book "The Joy of the Gospel." The 44th president gave the head of the world´s Roman Catholic Church a box of fruit and veggie seeds from his wife´s garden. The first meeting of the new pope and lame-duck president was closely-watched because of the Democrat's concerted efforts to bring religious

To the surprise of absolutely no one outside the Obama Oval Office, those Crimeans who voted in Sunday´s trumped-up referendum opted overwhelmingly to rejoin Russia. This as thousands of Russian troops occupied the Ukrainian province, while an even larger Russian army happened to conduct ´war games´ on Ukraine´s border. Obama, the former community organizer, again telephoned President Vladimir Putin, the former KGB colonel. Obama reminded the Russian he´d broken international law. Obama warned the Russian the referendum "would never be recognized by the United States." Bet that stung.

Good morning. My name is Bill Johnson, and I’m proud to represent Eastern and Southeastern Ohio in the House of Representatives. Four years ago today, President Obama came to our state and promised our seniors that his health care law would protect their benefits. He said this: “If you like your plan, you can keep your plan. If you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor. I don´t want to interfere with people’s relationships between them and their doctors." Now, the reality is, not only is the president’s health care law interfering with these relationships — it’s ending them.

As part of his desperate political plot to distract the country with something -- anything -- other than ObamaCare´s debacle and serial scandals, Barack Obama has been talking a lot about global warming. Forget about the Nov. 4 midterms, folks. The world is burning up. A crisis not to be wasted. Obama calls it climate change before his audiences because after this endless winter of polar vortexes and record snowfalls and ice cover, the word ´warming´ draws applause or chuckles. Before getting to the speech itself, it’s worth noting a few things. When the Democrats passed and Barack Obama signed Obamacare, the majority opposed it. About 56%, in fact. A majority have consistently opposed that law ever since. The Obama administration touted 7 million sign-ups by March 31 as “success.” When that goal appeared to be unreachable, the administration suggested that maybe 5 or 6 million would be enough. Now, as if by magic, they have their number. Somehow. All along, the administration has touted false numbers of enrollees. All along, the administration has neglected to admit that Obamacare is

A triumphant President Barack Obama declared his signature medical insurance overhaul a success, saying it has made America´s health care system ´a lot better.´ But buried in the 7.1 million enrollments he announced in a heavily staged Rose Garden appearance is a more unsettling reality. Numbers from a RAND Corporation study that has been kept under wraps suggest that barely 858,000 previously uninsured Americans – nowhere near 7.1 million – have paid for new policies and joined the ranks of the insured by Monday night. Others were already insured, including millions who lost coverage when their existing policies were suddenly

The former two-term governor of Florida speaks fluent Spanish, is a convert to Catholicism, and has high name recognition. Jeb could raise millions of dollars over night by just saying “yes” to running. Despite all this, there are strong reasons Republicans should say no to him. 1. His last name is poison. Let’s face it, if Jeb Bush had the last name of Something Else he would have already run for president in 2008 or 2012. According to a recent Washington Post/ABC News poll registered voters were asked if they would definitely NOT vote for Jeb Bush and 50 percent said they would not.
