Fashion designer Lilly Pulitzer dies at 81

MIAMI -- Lilly Pulitzer hosted parties in her bare feet and wasn´t afraid to get a little messy - just as long as she looked good and had fun, too. In the late 1950s, the Palm Beach socialite had time to spare and a wealthy husband who owned citrus groves, so she opened an orange juice stand just off the island´s main shopping street. Pulitzer needed to hide all the juice stains on her clothes, though. Instead of just putting on an apron, she asked her seamstress to make some sleeveless dresses

Thank you for posting! I had no idea what her story was. Her clothes were indeed "happy" and her prints were always attractive and tasteful, not garish. The shifts were body-skimmers, not intended to bind or cling. Beachy clothes...

She loved what she ended up doing. The best prescription her doctor could have given her. And she passed that joy on to others.

The 2003 profile in VF referenced in the article is wonderful - I was unable to track it down online. It goes more deeply into her story and her ex-husband, Peter Pulitzer´s, notorious marriage to Roxanne Pulitzer (of trumpet fame) after their divorce.

Lilly trivia - every Lilly print has "hidden Lilly´s" - her namer hidden in the artwork of the print, somewhere. Flower stamens and animal fur are favorite hiding places.

Her fragrances are great too - I really love "Squeeze" - a bright, clean citrus, but "Wink", a pink floral is nice, too.

I love her shops, and the ladylike shifts and sheaths that are the signature offerings. Try her PJ´s. You can often find them at TJ Maxx and the comfort can´t be beat.

Rest in peace, colorful lady.

With the prices I just saw on the website, many over $100 and most over $200, that´s a pretty expensive dress to have evolved out of wearing something to hide orange juice stains!

But I won´t deny the dresses are cute and ladylike.

I love Lilly Pulitzer! I wear her clothes whenever I can. In fact, I´d say a major part of my motivation to lose 100 pounds last year was the intense desire to wear Lilly Pulitzer dresses. With the weight off, I still couldn´t afford them, so I learned to do eBay and became and expert at it and made a ton of money so I could not just buy used LP dresses but new ones too.

The love of Lilly changed my life.

Rest in Peace.

Oh, and when the Fashion Valley Mall in San Diego kicked out Lilly Pulitzer because "it was not upscale enough" for I guess the Gucci-loving Japanese tourists, that was it, I no longer go to that mall. Not ever. What kind of stupid logic was that - there is nothing, but nothing, classier and cuter than a Lilly Pulitzer dress! Lilly was the only reason I ever went to that behemoth place and fought for parking. Well, not anymore!

The Republican Governors Association raised $23.5 million during the first three months of 2014, the organization will announce Thursday. It´s a record haul for the RGA, which is chaired by New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R). The RGA has nearly $60 million in the bank, money it will need as it seeks to defend 22 seats compared to just 14 for Democrats. Most of the money the RGA raised came from the group´s 527 arm, which hauled in more than $22 million. The 501(c)(4) affiliate raised $1.3 million. One of the biggest players in Obamacare´s exchanges says 15 to 20 percent of its new customers aren´t paying their first premium—which means they´re not actually covered. The latest data come from the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association, whose members—known collectively as "Blues" plans—are participating in the exchanges in almost every state. Roughly 80 to 85 percent of people who selected a Blues plan through the exchanges went on to pay their first month´s premium, a BCBSA spokeswoman said Wednesday. The new statistics, particularly from such a large carrier, help define how many people are actually getting covered under the Affordable Care

House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan on Tuesday released his fiscal year 2015 budget, in which he cuts $5.1 trillion in spending, mostly from health care, to balance the budget by 2024. The budget would repeal ObamaCare, including the money-saving Independent Payment Advisory Board, cutting $1.2 trillion in federal outlays. It turns Medicaid into a block grant program for states, which would save $732 billion over 10 years. It essentially aims to privatize Medicare, offering enrollees

Providing another dramatic example of its readiness to protect freedom of speech, the Roberts Court yesterday struck down a campaign-finance regulation that limited the total amount that an individual may donate to political candidates, thereby nixing a rule that had been in effect for more than 40 years. The plaintiff in the case was one Shaun McCutcheon, a conservative businessman from Alabama who argued that limits on his aggregate spending represented a violation of his constitutional right to free expression. The court agreed, 5–4. If the Citizens United case serves as any indication, the word “McCutcheon” will soon be hurled liberally

Paul Ryan has laid down another marker. Pity he doesn’t have the power to lay down the law. Representative Ryan has a budget, and the Democrats do not have one, nor do they plan to produce one. The proverb holds that you can’t beat something with nothing, but that is precisely what congressional Democrats are going to do with this Republican budget, just as they have with earlier iterations of the same concept. Representative Ryan finds himself in much the same position as Senator Rand Paul: ready to lead, a bit short on followers. My recent pessimistic assessment of Senator Rand Paul’s

George Soros’ South American ex-squeeze can sue him for alleged assault and battery stemming from a bedroom brawl in 2010, the Appellate Division ruled Tuesday, upholding part of a lower court´s decision. But the panel tossed Adriana Ferreyr’s attempt to go after the billionaire hedge fund manager for infliction of emotional distress, a part of her suit that had previously been upheld by Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Debra James. In effect, the Appellate judges narrowed the focus of the case the Brazilian TV soap actress brought against Soros in 2010, when she sued him for breaking his promise to buy

Before getting to the speech itself, it’s worth noting a few things. When the Democrats passed and Barack Obama signed Obamacare, the majority opposed it. About 56%, in fact. A majority have consistently opposed that law ever since. The Obama administration touted 7 million sign-ups by March 31 as “success.” When that goal appeared to be unreachable, the administration suggested that maybe 5 or 6 million would be enough. With Chris Christie in deep trouble, Republican poobahs are reportedly looking to Jeb Bush to save their party in 2016. The former two-term governor of Florida speaks fluent Spanish, is a convert to Catholicism, and has high name recognition. Jeb could raise millions of dollars over night by just saying “yes” to running. Despite all this, there are strong reasons Republicans should say no to him. 1. His last name is poison. Let’s face it, if Jeb Bush had the last name of Something Else he would have already run for president in 2008 or 2012. According to a recent Washington Post/ABC News poll registered voters were asked if they would definitely NOT vote for Jeb Bush and 50 percent said they would not.
