Flight diverted after family raises
concerns over PG-13 inflight movie

Fox News, by Staff

Original Article

Posted By:Maryland_Patriot, 4/5/2013 11:12:46 AM

A family´s criticism of inflight entertainment allegedly prompted a United flight to be diverted over "security concerns." In a story published in The Atlantic, one family recounts traveling from Denver to Baltimore with two young sons, ages 4 and 8. During the flight, the PG-13-rated detective film "Alex Cross" was shown on drop-down monitors across the plane. The family worried about their young children seeing inappropriate content in the film. "Alarmed by the opening scenes, we asked two flight attendants if they could turn off the monitor; both claimed it was not possible," the family said, according to The Atlantic.

They really shouldn´t show some PG-13 movies on flights. I have walked out of some when my kid was younger. Why are movies edited for in-flight showing? Most of the sex and violence is gratuitous.

Parents explanation of the hardships after being told there was no way to turn off movie is bogus. Simply cover the screen if you don´t want your kids to see it. People are so helpless these days and complain about everything under the sun.

Show a film that uses any anti-gay references. The airline would be singing a different tune.

Sex and violence is fine. Right?

The main point I get from this story is that the Captain unnecessarily treated this family like terrorists because they said that violent movie was inappropriate for their younger children. That is the typical liberal response to any questioning of their values. "I´m OK. You´re a weirdo."

The captain could have said, "We´re sorry, we should not have shown this movie because it is not appropriate for children," and stopped the movie. This could have been avoided with tact and common sense. Instead, he acted like a jerk and made a huge incident out of it.

If this was a typical airplane, you can´t use paper and tape because there are many rows on both sides of the plane watching the same screen. The answer is better ´screening´ of movie content because of children on the flight or ????

We´re only hearing one side of the story here. Why didn´t the parents just try to distract their kids? Are they so helpless that they didn´t think to bring coloring books and gameboys for them?

Why should the whole plane give up their entertainment because two mightily-entitled parents wanted their way?

So, if you want to protect your children in an environment in which you are essentially trapped you are therefore "mghtily entitled?" Give me a break. Did you ever try to distract children from loud sounds and vividly colored moving images with a coloring book, for crying out loud? Some planes have individual screens on the seatbacks, sure, but this sounds like one of the ones with a number of screens on the ceiling that could not be covered. Are children always to be sacrificed to our "right" to be entertained at all times and in all places? Are we really that selfish? (Don´t bother to answer the question, I already know what the answer is.)

We traveled a lot with our son when he was young and had a small DVD player with headphones specifically for him. He chose the movies he wanted to see and sat quietly between us watching "his" movies, even on long international flights.

Wherever we went we had a "travel bag" that had toys and movies he only got to play with when we were traveling. I´d usually add a few new things before a long trip, and let him buy a movie he really wanted to see. We never had a problem with what was on the big screens because he was too involved with his own screen to care.

The Captain never should have diverted the aircraft, if he did for that reason. I bet there´s more to this story than in the news--as in they were disrupting the other passengers, or that they are Muslim. Having worked in the airline business and the travel industry for 20 years, this is no reason why.

The children do not have to look at the screen--diversion with toys and books is perfectly appropriate, and they don´t have to wear the headphones.

The parents are looking at United´s deep pockets and gaining a payday.

This is the reason I don´t fly. Stupid people in charge and stupid passengers.
The captain shouldn´t have diverted the flight and the dumb passenger protesting the movie could have popped the screen backup if it couldn´t, blindfold your precious stupid kids and take the headphones away.
All the other passengers should sue United for delaying their schedules. That would teach them to overreact to disgruntled passengers. Show the movies to be shown before you sell idiots tickets let them decide if they want to fly that flight/airline.
Kids cartoons are filled with flatulance and burping sounds now. The seven dwarfs and Sponge Bob have gas. Give me a break.

In this situation and based on these facts, the flight probably should have continued on. If the complaining passengers were being disruptive, the captain did the right thing. I do think airlines need to be more careful about what they screen on flights.

With a little research the parents could have found out what movie was being shown and made their free market choice based on an informed opinion. Buyer beware. And to be honest I am getting tired of parents acting like they have more rights than anyone else. Your child is not special and your not the first people to have a kid. Get over yourselves.

On the other hand the pilot could have handled it without diverting the flight.

Oh yeah right....put a blindfold on your kid?? Give me a break. The problem is the so-called rating system they use today. What passes for PG-13 now used to be considered at least "R" rated in days gone by. What falls under "R" today used to be considered "X"!!! Hollywood just loves throwing in gratuitous sex, violence and filthy language every chance it can get now. The captain of this flight caused an unnecessary expense to his employer. To divert to an unscheduled airport, delay the flight, bring about adverse publicity AND cause unnecessary wear and fuel for ground operation and climb back to en route altitude cost thousands of additional dollars.

He should have had the crew secure the entertainment and flown on.
