Mysterious mail triggers
global tax-haven probe

Agence France-Presse, by Staff

Original Article

The cascade of WikiLeaks-style revelations shedding light on the often murky world of offshore tax havens began when Gerard Ryle received a mysterious letter in the post. The experienced investigative journalist had been busy trying to unravel the details of a large financial fraud in his native Australia when the prospect of an even bigger scoop landed on his doormat. The letter contained part of a hard drive with the details of 2.5 million digital files, a treasure trove that would ultimately yield information on 120,000 offshore companies and nearly 130,000 individuals.

In some nations there will be an interesting contest between the tax agencies that always want to find more revenues and the justice departments who will do all they can to avoid prosecuting the well connected.

Some tax evaders are more equal....

And, as the article says, some with overseas accounts report them and pay their taxes. Being named does not prove guilt.

Atlanta – Vegetarians may have a lower BMI and drink alcohol sparingly, but vegetarian diets are tied to generally poorer health, poorer quality of life and a higher need for health care than their meat-eating counterparts. A new study from the Medical University of Graz in Austria finds that vegetarians are more physically active, drink less alcohol and smoke less tobacco than those who consume meat in their diets. Vegetarians also have a higher socioeconomic status and a lower body mass index. But the vegetarian diet — characterized by a low consumption of saturated fats and cholesterol that includes increased intake

Berkeley, Calif. — Delivering a rare speech for a Republican at this bastion of liberalism, Kentucky Sen. Paul’s address at the Berkeley Forum on the campus of the University of California at Berkeley focused on the National Security Agency’s collection of telephone metadata and the debate over privacy. Frustration with the search for missing flight MH370 boiled over into chaotic scenes as Chinese relatives were dragged away from journalists. They were attempting to speak to Chinese journalists outside the daily press conference in Kuala Lumpur. A BBC reporter was pushed away from the relatives, who were carrying banners criticising the handling of the case. Teams from 26 countries are trying to find flight MH370, which went missing on 8 March with 239 people on board. One of the relatives, a middle-aged woman, cried: "They give different messages every day! Where´s the flight now? Find our relatives! Find the aircraft!" The Malaysian government said

The anguish of relatives of the 239 people on Flight 370 boiled over at a briefing near Kuala Lumpur´s airport. Two Chinese women who shouted at Malaysian authorities and unfurled a banner accusing officials of "hiding the truth" were removed from the room. The Associated Press has stepped up its attack on White House efforts to block coverage of events involving President Obama, warning that once access is cut, “we´ll never get it back.” In the latest media charge that the White House has reneged on promises to be “transparent,” two of AP´s White House staff told a convention in Denver this week that the president´s team often bars coverage of Obama events because they are “hypersensitive” about his Image. At the Newspaper Association of America´s mediaXchange convention in Denver, AP White House photographer Charles Dharapak said that instead of letting reporters and photographers in

Have you had enough of the testing tyranny? Join the club. To be clear: I´m not against all standardized academic tests. My kids excel on tests. The alert was just the latest example of the federal government’s continued struggle with oversight over its outside contractors. The lack of oversight “exposes the department to significant financial risk,” the auditor said. “It creates conditions conducive to fraud, as corrupt individuals may attempt

But buried in the 7.1 million enrollments he announced in a heavily staged appearance is a more unsettling reality. Numbers from a RAND Corporation study that has been kept under wraps suggest that barely 858,000 previously uninsured Americans – nowhere near 7.1 million – have paid for new policies and joined the ranks of the insured by Monday night.

He has appeared on TV news shows 12 times in the past six months. That’s essentially on pace with Michigan GOP Rep.
