torrential rains kill 52

LA PLATA, Argentina — At least 52 people drowned in their homes and cars, were electrocuted or died in other accidents as flooding from days of torrential rains swamped Argentina´s low-lying capital and province of Buenos Aires. At least 46 died Wednesday in and around the city of La Plata, Gov. Daniel Scioli said. Six deaths were reported a day earlier in the nation´s capital. Many people climbed onto their roofs in the pouring rain after storm sewers backed up. Water surged up through drains in their kitchen and bathroom floors, and then poured in over their windowsills.

Hey dummys, are you gonna wait for the U.S. to bring boats? Yeah, I remember all the Argentinian help during the Mid West floods.

Marco Rubio´s Straight Talk
On Venezuela And Cuba
Investor´s Business Daily, by Editorial    Original Article

Leadership: Marco Rubio lit the Senate on fire Wednesday with a powerful statement about Cuba´s stranglehold on Venezuela. He didn´t need to dig deep to prove it: His evidence was as abundant as Cuba´s shortages. With much of the foreign policy establishment either silent or focused elsewhere, and useful idiots in the Venezuelan regime spewing mendacious talking points in the media, it´s easy for truth to get lost in the maelstrom submerging Venezuela, a nation just 1,200 miles from Key West. But every now and then a leader emerges from such a mess, and Sen. Rubio stood out with what

Vice President Joe Biden has revealed that the President assigned him ‘every s*** job in the world’ but he still wasn’t able to win Obama’s full support and began being effectively frozen out after one of his infamous gaffes. The 71-year-old argued that he was happy to do the less glamorous tasks- like handling the at-times petty Senate fights and calming the fears of the infamously paranoid President of Afghanistan Hamid Karzai- but only at a price. ‘When the president asked me what portfolio did I want, I said, “Base it on what you want of me to help you

Russia is planning to expand its permanent military presence outside its borders by placing military bases or seeking permission for navy ships to use ports in a number of foreign countries, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said on Wednesday. The list includes Vietnam, Cuba, Venezuela, Nicaragua, the Seychelles, Singapore and several other countries. Shoigu in remarks carried by Russian news agencies also revealed that the military was also conducting talks with Algeria and Cyprus. He said that it was essential for the Russian navy to be able to call at their ports to service its ships. Shoigu said Russia was also talking

Mexican magnate Carlos Slim and the Italian group Proto will be the principal shareholders of the US daily The New York Times (NYT), said sources at the Proto Organization. This is because Slim plans to exercise at the end of this year warrants he received when he made a major loan to the newspaper company, according to a report in Bloomberg. ”This agreement for joint participation in 19% of NYT capital was taken in New York by Carlos Slim and Alessandro Proto (president of the group), and will be finalized next week,” the sources said. Justice: Mexico has bagged crime cartel boss Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman in a major takedown. Problem is, Mexico has no death penalty, and its lax prisons are a joke. So why not try El Chapo in the U.S.? For Mexico, the capture of Guzman, kingpin of kingpins who ran Mexico´s biggest and most powerful drug cartel, was the equivalent of the U.S. takedown of Osama bin Laden. His diabolical war over the last decade has left tens of thousands dead as he amassed a $3 billion fortune.

At the southernmost point of Central Park, on a small strip of sidewalk abutting 59th Street, hundreds of Venezuelans swarmed a statue of Simon Bolivar, the Caracas-born liberator of South America and a figure now most commonly associated with the bolivarian revolution of Hugo Chavez and his rechristened Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela. But it’s an association that when mentioned in this crowd produces furrowed brows and narrowed eyes, quickly followed by a rapid-fire recapitulation of Chavez’s many crimes. The necessary symbolism of the meeting point trumped practicality: the crowd quickly swelled, spreading like an inkblot from the small patch surrounding Bolivar

Just Abolish The FCC

Bureaucracy: The FCC jumped the shark with its outrageous plan to police America´s newsrooms. This grasp for a new mission signals an agency that has outlived its purpose. We have a better idea: Just scrap the FCC. There´s nothing worse than a federal agency that has lost its original mission, has nothing productive to do and, as a result, is restlessly rustling around for something to justify its existence. That describes the Federal Communications Commission, an old-line agency founded in the 1930s to regulate a limited supply of television airwaves divided among three networks, which is now gone with the wind. Today, television

Leadership: On the 20th anniversary of Nafta, perhaps the greatest trade pact in history, President Obama came to a summit with Canada and Mexico with little to offer, wasting a chance for a far-reaching new energy pact. The leaders of the U.S., Mexico and Canada, representing the three nations that took the risk in 1993 to form the North American Free Trade Agreement, should be crowing like Olympians. Twenty years on, Nafta is one of the most powerful and revolutionary success stories in the history of trade. Nafta remains the world´s biggest trade pact, increasing trade among the three states to $1

Proposed FCC study of news

A proposed government study of how media organizations gather news has incited a powerful backlash, particularly among conservatives, who said that it could be part of an official effort to intimidate or second-guess journalists. Faced with an outcry, the Federal Communications Commission’s chairman said Thursday that he would amend the effort — intended to assess whether the news media were meeting the public’s “critical information needs” — by removing questions that critics had deemed invasive. The FCC last year proposed an analysis of news content from newspapers, Web sites and radio and TV stations. The agency said it wanted to assess

How are things coming along in Venezuela, that paradise of democratic socialism? You must remember Venezuela. That´s the country that Diane Abbott said was showing "a better way", which Owen Jones told us had proven that "you can lead a progressive, popular government that says no to neo-liberalism"? The apple in the eye of Marx, the last hope for humanity in a world of fat cat banksters and austerity Scrooges. The Copacobana of the international revolution. Viva! How is Venezuela doing? Revolts: Two massive uprisings have rocked Ukraine and Venezuela. Neither toppled the countries´ tyrants, but the one more likely to succeed is in Ukraine, where resistance is no longer passive. Venezuela saw some of its biggest protests in years on Tuesday, with hundreds of thousands of citizens marching through Caracas and elsewhere, peaceably demanding an end to the country´s communist government. That government, in power for 15 years as a result of election fraud, has brought shortages, inflation, crime and oppression and is finally running out of other people´s money.

If you listen to the chattering class in Washington, D.C., Hillary Clinton is a virtual certainty for the 2016 Democratic nomination, and the front runner in the next presidential race. But in private, rumors persist that the former Secretary of State may not even be capable of making it to Iowa and New Hampshire. Clinton, these skeptics often say, will not run for president again because of health concerns. These ubiquitous rumors of her health have been fueled in part by the supermarket tabloids. The National Enquirer wrote in 2012 that Clinton had brain cancer, something a spokesman dismissed then as “absolute

The “greatest buried treasure ever unearthed in the United States” is about to be hit by the tax collector. According to Kathleen Pender, a columnist at the San Francisco Chronicle, the couple who found in cans buried on their property more than 1,400 rare gold coins worth more than $10 million will probably owe close to half of that sum in federal and state income tax, whether or not they sell the coins. She quoted a 2013 tax guide in which the IRS stated: “If you find and keep property that does not belong to you that has been lost or

Kerry Kennedy has been found not guilty of drugged driving — and gave herself a hearty round of applause after jurors were dismissed from court by a Westchester County judge. The jury handed down the verdict after just 30 minutes of deliberation Friday morning. The six-member panel had deliberated about 45 minutes Thursday night after being handed the case. Kennedy — who had faced up to a year in jail if convicted — hugged both her lawyers as the verdict was read, and then began clapping after the jurors left the courtroom. Her lawyers and a band of supporters, including

The question isn’t why Arthur Chu brought his peculiar, buzzer-smacking brand of game play to “Jeopardy.” The question is why, in 50 long years of the show’s history, more people haven’t done the same. Chu, if you haven’t heard of him, is the “Jeopardy” contestant nonchalantly bulldozing America’s collective nostalgic vision for how game shows should work, who cruised to his eighth straight victory on Thursday night. President Barack Obama is warning Russia "there will be costs" for any military maneuvers it launches in Ukraine, a move U.S. and Ukrainian officials say they believe to be already underway. Officials say Obama may retaliate by canceling a trip to Russia this summer for an international summit and could also cut off trade discussions with Moscow. But it´s unclear whether those moves will have any impact on Russia´s calculus in Ukraine, which is at the center of what many see as a tug of war between East and West. "Any violation of Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity would be deeply destabilizing," Obama declared Friday

Benghazi: Former CIA acting Director Mike Morell might be recalled for testimony to determine if he misled Congress and doctored the White House response to a terrorist attack to ensure President Obama´s re-election. The administration´s tangled web of Benghazi lies might be unraveling some more. House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Rogers, R-Mich., has told Fox News that Morell, a former deputy director and twice acting director of the Central Intelligence Agency, will likely be recalled to testify. The recall comes after new charges surfaced that Morell misled Congress about what he knew regarding the 2012 Benghazi attack and when he knew it.

SEVASTOPOL, Ukraine — Heightened Russian military activity in Crimea on Friday prompted a stern warning from President Obama and a deepening sense of crisis among the leaders of the new Ukrainian government in Kiev. U.S. officials said Russian troops had entered Crimea, and Obama told reporters Friday evening that he was “deeply concerned by reports of military movements” and that there “will be costs for any military intervention.” Earlier in the day, the new Ukrainian government said that hundreds of soldiers in green camouflage, without insignia but carrying military-style automatic rifles, had taken over two airports in Crimea.
