Disgraced former governor Mark Sandford
publicly debuts his mistress-turned-fiancée
as he accepts GOP nomination for
vacant South Carolina House seat

Former South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford publicly debuted the woman he sacrificed his political career for four years ago as he won the GOP nomination for a vacant U.S. House seat on Tuesday. His fiancée Maria Belen Chapur stood by his side as he delivered his victory speech and thanked her for putting up with him throughout his race against former county council member Curtis Bostic. [Snip] It is the first time he has stepped out publicly with Chapur after he disappeared from South Carolina in 2009 and returned to confess to an extramarital affair with the Argentine woman.

Is there some reason why Mark Sanford can´t get a real job? Just take Chapper and go away.

It would seem that being a lying pilanderer does not disqualify politicians with the voters in South Carolina! No wonder we have such a disfunctional government!

I´m puzzled as to why Sanford hasn´t married Chapur yet. He got divorced three years ago. Does he plan to take her to Washington with him as his live-in girlfriend? From a purely pragmatic standpoint, wouldn´t it benefit him to have a wife rather than a girlfriend?

It wasn´t just that Sanford cheated on his wife. He went AWOL from his job and even his staff couldn´t find him. That´s totally unacceptable.

I´m, frankly, appalled that he won the nomination. His opponent must either have been a complete loser or the Democrats had a hand in stuffing ballots for him.

Sanford´s fiancee is a real looker. What red-blooded American male wouldn´t take a long hike on the Appalachian Trail to spend some quality time with her?

Seriously, America is about second chances. And I´m willing to give Mark Sanford a second chance. It´s not like he went out and killed someone. He had an affair, he paid a price for it. Let´s move on.

I´m not in SC so this is just my thoughts without in influence. I would vote for Samford before any Democrat. Any Democrat elected moves Naci closer to Speakership. That is far worse than an adulterer and goof-off winning a seat (Actually, he doesn´t sound any different from the vast majority of our elected officials).

Can´t believe anybody would vote for this ego-driven cheater. He built himself a shrine to himself on his property to house all his career memorabilia. And he had the nerve to ask his ex-wife to run his campaign. What a jerk. No self-awareness at all. He should not be even close to winning elected office again, in my opinion.

I also agree with those who point out the biggest toad of all, Bill Clinton. He used his power as president to use a very young intern working for him at the WH. He could have, and should have, been a father figure for her. He is a repulsive toad, yet DC, Hollywood, and the world revere him as a god. Sick. Sorry for the rant, I really can´t understand how upside down this world is.

#11, you asked "Why are women so enamored with lying womanizers like Sanford and Clinton?" I don´t see how you can compare the two. I despised Clinton--and his wife for not divorcing him. (Disclaimer: I worked in Arkansas politics for a while.)

As for Jennie Sanford, my take is she saw in Sanford presidential material--material that could take her to FLOTUS status. However, Sanford decided he would not run for President and, I believe, Jenny Sanford was furious and did not hide her feelings--she felt she was owed the position of FLOTUS for everything she had done to help his election to governor. I´m sure she was playing the old Eric Berne game, "Look what I´ve done for you."

I don´t know how many interviews, ink and video, Mrs. Sanford did but it was a large number, plus her book Staying True. Seems every time we turned on the TV, there she was in martyr costume, discussing her failed marriage. And the couple´s four young sons witnessed this toxic garment-rending. True, Sanford made a bit of an idiot of himself in the beginning but shortly after that he shut up and carried on, while Jenny Sanford kept up with her other game "How I have suffered (after everything I did for him)."

Have any of you wondered why Mrs. Sanford permitted the sons to appear at political engagements with their father--and their father´s fiancée? Do you think that would have happened without Jenny´s permission? She knows what´s best for her sons. But in the meantime someone keeps dropping poisonous little barbs that may or may not be true. I´ve heard only rumors about asking her to run his campaign; neither party has corroborated that charge.

Deep in the flat and featureless landscape of eastern Ukraine, it is all too possible that the outline of World War III is taking shape. Whipped up by the Kremlin propaganda machine and led by Russian military intelligence, armed men are erecting road blocks, storming police stations and ripping down the country’s flag.
