Betraying one of the
CIA’s ‘Band of Sisters’?

Washington Post, by Marc A. Thiessen

Original Article

Posted By:Drive, 4/1/2013 2:20:59 PM

Former CIA director Mike Hayden credits “an incredible band of sisters” for the success of the operation that found and brought down Osama bin Laden. Now one of those sisters has been appointed acting chief of the CIA’s National Clandestine service. It is a major milestone for women at the CIA, the first time in the agency’s history that a female officer has headed the clandestine service. But The Post reports that CIA Director John Brennan is “hesitating” at giving her the position on a permanent basis, because of her past association with the CIA’s rendition, detention and interrogation (RDI) program. This is an outrage. According to several former senior CIA officials I spoke with, the officer is highly respected and unquestionably qualified for this post.

How Obama and Congress Failed
AmeriCorps, And Failed America – Again
National Journal, by Ron Fournier    Original Article
Posted By: Drive- 8/1/2013 8:09:48 AM     Post Reply
During his first presidential race, Barack Obama pledged to "expand and fund AmeriCorps from 75,000 slots today to 250,000" volunteers, putting service-minded millennials to work on the nation´s toughest problems. After just three months in office, he signed the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act authorizing the expansion of the Clinton-era program to the goal of 250,000. He had kept his promise, Obama boasted, and he declared 2009 the dawn of a "new era of service." But the dawn never broke. Congress never funded the quarter-million hires, not even when Democrats controlled both chambers in 2009-10.

Harry Reid’s claim that the sequester
has ‘already cut 1.6 million jobs’
Washington Post, by Glenn Kessler    Original Article

“We have learned that the sequestration already has cut 1.6 million jobs. So we need job creation. We need to help the middle class by creating jobs.” — Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), floor speech, July 31, 2013 Reid’s comment jumped out at us — 1.6 million jobs have already been lost because of the sequester? That seemed rather large. The sequester, of course, are the automatic across-the-board spending cuts that were imposed March 1 when Republicans and Democrats could not reach agreement on a budget plan.

Can same-sex couples
help save marriage?
Washington Post, by E.J. Dionne    Original Article

The rapid evolution of attitudes toward gay marriage is a wonder to behold. On few issues has public opinion moved as quickly or decisively. Many who are against the formal recognition of homosexual unions are now resigned to the reality they will eventually become commonplace. The main drivers of this transformation are obvious. Most Americans now know that people they care about are gay men or lesbians, and empathy can do wonderful things. Partly because of this, younger Americans overwhelmingly favor same-sex marriage. They will dominate the electorates of the future.

Fox Guest Slams Reza Aslan’s ‘Aloof

President of the Media Research Center Brent Bozell appeared on Fox News Wednesday afternoon to rebut days of criticism over Lauren Green’s recent interview with author Reza Aslan, in which the Fox anchor repeatedly questioned Aslan’s motives for writing a text on Jesus when he himself is a Muslim. “It was the exact correct question that needed to be asked,” Bozell said. “She had every right to ask him, ‘Do you have a bias? Are you being influenced by your faith to write what you’re writing?’ He should have said, first and foremost, said, ‘Yes I am.’

Somebody deserves an Oscar for special effects. A crafty trio of black robbers bought amazingly lifelike disguises from a Hollywood special-effects firm to transform themselves into white guys for a brazen Queens heist — and their get-ups were so good, their victims had no clue they were in masks. The Brooklyn federal court trial of Akeem Monsalvatge, Derrick Dunkley and Edward Byam opened yesterday with witnesses describing how they were completely fooled. The perps spent two painstaking months plotting their $200,000 stickup of a Queens check-cashing store last year — and theorized that switching races would help, authorities said.

Obama’s Five Disconnects

Pivot or Divot? On one level, President Obama achieved admirable transparency in his recent Knox College address. He succinctly described most of the forces that have helped increase income inequality over the past three decades, primarily trade (many unskilled jobs are now performed overseas) and technology (which arguably increases the value of both education and “star” job performance). That these trends were obvious over a decade ago, when Bill Clinton was running for office–or that Obama himself has talked about them for years–doesn’t make them less real.

Weiner Names New Campaign Manager

NEW YORK —One day after his campaign manager quit, the mayoral candidate Anthony D. Weiner named his penis to the post, telling reporters, “He was already making most of the major decisions, anyway.” In announcing the new appointment, Mr. Weiner lavished praise upon his penis, calling him “a tough hombre” who “cares about the struggles of ordinary, middle-class New Yorkers.” After one reporter questioned the wisdom of naming his penis to such an important role in the campaign, Mr. Weiner dismissed that concern, saying, “Look, he’s gotten me this far.”

Diplomatic Security agent David Ubben has been receiving treatment at Walter Reed Military Medical Center after being severely wounded on September 11, 2012 when the U.S. consulate in Benghazi was attacked by terrorists. According to Fox News, Ubben waited for help on top of a roof for 20 hours. What difference does waiting that long make? The lives of two Navy SEALs. During the second wave of attacks on Benghazi, David Ubben was on the rooftops with the Navy SEALS.

As Anthony D. Weiner tries to repair the damage left by new revelations about his online behavior with women, one question nags at voters and those who once supported him: Why did he do it? Why did Mr. Weiner, who already forfeited his Congressional seat and imperiled his marriage, return to social media sites and send explicit messages and photos to strangers? Did he discount the risks to his family, his reputation and his career, or not understand them?

President Obama in 2010 signed a law requiring large employers to offer health insurance to their employees. Earlier this Summer, President Obama announced his administration wasn’t going to require large employers to offer health insurance to their employees. Perhaps there is some explanation why it’s okay for Obama to do this. But if you ask Obama for that explanation, he gets pretty ****** at you. Here’s what Obama said when a New York Times reporter asked: If Congress thinks that what I’ve done is inappropriate or wrong in some fashion, they’re free to make that case.

Pope Francis doesn’t do interviews. Or at least that’s what we thought. He said that about himself just one week ago on the way to Rio de Janeiro for World Youth Day. Then World Youth Day happened. And it happened in a big way. According to official reports from City Hall, 3.2 million young people gathered on Copacabana Beach to see him, pray with him, and hear his proposal about the meaning of life. The Bible and the Catholic Church have never taught that it is a “sin” to be homosexual.

CNN’s Don Lemon would have been a great guest on any talk show Monday after the explosive weekend he had telling viewers Bill O’Reilly “doesn’t go far enough” in his criticism of black culture. He stayed off the major morning shows, but there he was sitting in the audience of The View, apparently as the guest of Republican strategist and temporary co-host Ana Navarro. The camera panned over to Lemon for a quick, impromptu interview about the statements he made that have so many people on both sides of the racial divide

President Obama has been rolling up his sleeves campaigning across the country delivering a surreal stump speech message supposedly aimed at the middle class: big government works, Obamacare is manna from heaven, the wave of recent scandals are “phony” figments of the imagination, and all economic problems are the fault of the Republicans. Conveniently, he leaves out the bankruptcy of Detroit, a city run by his own party for more than half a century. His message is so stale and unconvincing, that even The New York Times and Washington Post have noticed. Both papers, usually loyal to Obama, remarked that

Gotta figure her lead would be even bigger without Joe Miller in the field here. Her nomination for the taking? Alaska should be a top tier pick up opportunity for Senate Republicans next year…but their top choice of a candidate is Sarah Palin. 36% of GOP primary voters in the state say they’d like Palin to be their standard bearer against Mark Begich to 26% for Mead Treadwell, 15% for Dan Sullivan, and 12% for Joe Miller.

Embattled Internal Revenue Service official Lois Lerner and an attorney in the Federal Election Commission’s general counsel’s office appear to have twice colluded to influence the record before the FEC’s vote in the case of a conservative non-profit organization, according to e-mails unearthed by the House Ways and Means Committee and obtained exclusively by National Review Online. The correspondence suggests the discrimination of conservative groups extended beyond the IRS and into the FEC, where an attorney from the agency’s enforcement division in at least one case sought and received tax information about the status of a conservative group,

Sen. John McCain — a Democrat? There was confusion Wednesday after the Arizona Republican mistakenly strolled into President Obama’s meeting with Senate Democrats at the Capitol. The room full of Democrats — who happened to be meeting in the same room where the Senate GOP usually holds their weekly policy luncheons — erupted in applause and laughter as the former Republican presidential candidate made his entrance. As McCain, 76, walked out of the Dem-filled space, reporters pressed him as to why he stepped foot in the room.

Karl Rove and more than one hundred Republican donors sent a letter to Republican members of Congress on Tuesday, urging them to pass a comprehensive immigration reform bill that would include, among other provisions, granting "legal status" to illegal aliens who meet certain criteria. Anticipating that lawmakers will face resistance to the bill when they go home for the August recess, the letter marks the escalation of a campaign in which Republican leaders and donors are pressuring House Republicans to act on an immigration reform bill.

No matter how much you may hope for it, it seems unlikely that you´ll be using the phrase "Senator Sarah Palin" with any great regularity in 2015. A new poll indicates that the former Alaska governor is about as popular in the state as Barack Obama — which is to say, not very popular at all. But even more surprising, while the former vice presidential candidate has made Alaska a central part of her public image, the state´s residents split on the question of whether Palin is all that Alaskan.
