Is America Still a Good Country?
Human Events, by Patrick J. Buchanan

Original Article

Posted By:jackson, 3/29/2013 8:38:11 AM

"Not until I went to the churches of America and heard her pulpits aflame with righteousness did I understand the secret of her genius and power. America is great because she is good, and if America ever ceases to be good, America will cease to be great.” So wrote Alexis de Tocqueville. Yet, judged by the standards of those old “pulpits aflame with righteousness,” is America still a good country? Consider the cases taken up this week by the Supreme Court

Comments:
I often wonder if the boys on Iwo Jima knew that they wer offering their lives for such a country as we have today. Where the rich and powerful are coddled, the lazy rewarded, the industrious punished, the righteous mocked, and all standards of public decency f-bombed into oblivian, and God is booed. No Pat - We are no longer a good country.

Met one of those boys who was at Iwo Jima the other day at Waffle House. He was alone and when I was paying my bill he asked me what I thought of the music being played by some young folks nearby. Told him I thought it was terrible and we got into a discussion of Big Bands in the 40´s. He then started to leave but waited for me by the door where there was a poster of the raising of the flag on Iwo Jima. He told me he was 89 and that today (March 26th) was the 68th anniversary of the end of the battle of Iwo Jima. He pointed to the men raising the flag and told me their names and personal things about them - he was there and knew them all personally. He then saluted them as did I and we proceeded to the parking lot. I patted him on the back, thanked him for his service and told him "God bless". He walked as best he could to his car in the handicap spot and I had a tear in my eye thinking of what the world has devolved to in this man´s lifetime. My impression was he was a widower and the last man standing among his former comrades. Heaven will be forever safe for the good, true an honorable with man such as him guarding its gates.

The pace at which the foundational values and virtues of our founders are being discarded is alarming, for certain. Of course there are still good people, though today many of us here grieve the loss of one of the "goodest" who inhabited this place with us for the past decade.

In loving memory of our friend, whose goodness is celebrated over at The Connection,

Hey #1, awesome, but sad post.

I hated that song from the ´90s by Joan Osborne, "What if God were one of us?"

What if God were one of us...just a stranger on a bus...trying to make his way home...

That said, the way America is today, that man could very well have been Jesus himself and nobody in America today would have recognized Him.

We have fallen so far in such a relatively short time...God have mercy on us!

The President takes delight in MOCKING the "good" people of this country. Sadly, it is not at all difficult to predict the future. With some harsh and bold initiatives the economy can be put on the right track. The moral decline is a whole other issue and may take generations to reverse.

If marriage can exist between a man and a man or a woman and a woman, what are we to make of our requirement that the Mormons had to give up plural marriage in order to join the union? Should they be allowed to reinstate it? Are they entitled to compensation?

These are not serious questions as I doubt they would want to reinstate plural marriage, but what are the answers?

There is an overwhelming desire in this country to be deemed ´enlightened´ or ´sophisticated´ or God forbid, ´progressive´. Holding to traditions, even if they are rock solid from a historical perspective, is seen as backward. We are in real trouble with the issue of Gay marriage or as I say ´homosexual marriage´ as I loathe the hijacking of the sweet word ´Gay´ by this group.

I´d say that most Americans were and still are good people but I wouldn´t say that America, as defined by the politicians and judges, was or is a good country. A country whose leaders allowed slavery, segregation, Jim Crow laws, abortion and gay "rights" is not a good country.

WASHINGTON -- Inevitably, considering the absence of a clear Republican frontrunner for the 2016 presidential election, the name of former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush of the family dynasty has been rushed to the fore. On his record in office and his soft-spoken personal appeal, he would seem a natural to go to the head of a list of only moderately impressive wannabes. But the immediate question is: Do American voters, after a double dose of Bushes, want another one? The fact is that memories of the two George Bush presidencies now set few GOP hearts aflutter. The first George, elected to

Is the Republican Party’s Middle East policy up for bid? In the early 2016 Republican presidential sweepstakes, could former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush be the beneficiary of New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie´s recent stumbles? That´s the question a number of analysts are starting to ask as Christie, formerly a clear favorite of the GOP establishment, starts to lose his luster, tarnished by months of critical headlines about the George Washington Bridge traffic scandal in New Jersey. Vladimir Putin seems to have lost touch with reality, Angela Merkel reportedly told Barack Obama after speaking with the Russian president. But he may be the early frontrunner when it comes to offering a realistic conservative agenda for reforms that address the economic challenges of modern America. And whether or not he pulls the trigger on a White House run, the U.S. senator from Florida is already helping to refashion the GOP once again into the Party of Ideas. In a series of smart domestic-policy speeches this year, Rubio has generally avoided the easy, reflexive response as to what’s gone terribly wrong with the American

What has been happening in Ukraine is not a wake-up call precisely but a tugging at the attention, a demand to focus. There´s a sense that in some new way we are watching the 21st century take its shape and express its central realities. Exactly 100 years ago, in August 1914, the facts that would shape the 20th century gathered and emerged in the Great War. History doesn´t repeat itself; you can´t, as they say, step into the same stream twice. But it does have an unseen circularity. Sept. 11 started the century and brought forward the face of terrorism. Madison police say the attack was spurred by a neighbor´s girlfriend, who hoped to have him robbed. But the suspects instead stumbled into the wrong home in an affluent Madison neighborhood. A criminal complaint filed Tuesday says the suspects beat the man who lived there with a handgun and assaulted his wife, who was six months pregnant. Both were hospitalized. California Republican Rep. Darrell Issa’s House Oversight and Government Reform Committee has recalled embattled former IRS exempt organizations division head Lois Lerner to testify on Capitol Hill Wednesday. Lerner’s apology for improperly scrutinizing and harassing conservative groups applying for non-profit status kicked off the IRS targeting scandal ten months ago, and Lerner has been stonewalling ever since (famously trying to invoke the Fifth Amendment the last time she testified but failing because she made a statement attesting to her innocence first). Her lawyer said she intends to “continue to assert her Fifth Amendment rights.” Since she already waived them, Issa

In a move sure to reignite the IRS scandal that rocked the agency and the Obama administration last Spring, House Oversight Committee chairman Darrell Issa is recalling disgraced IRS official Lois Lerner to a March 5 hearing, demanding that she resume her testimony before his panel. In late May, Lerner delivered an opening statement to Issa’s committee before invoking her Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination. The panel later voted that, in making that statement, in which Lerner declared she had done nothing wrong, the former head of the IRS’s Exempt Organizations division had waived her Fifth Amendment rights.

Before getting to the speech itself, it’s worth noting a few things. When the Democrats passed and Barack Obama signed Obamacare, the majority opposed it. About 56%, in fact. A majority have consistently opposed that law ever since. The Obama administration touted 7 million sign-ups by March 31 as “success.” When that goal appeared to be unreachable, the administration suggested that maybe 5 or 6 million would be enough. Now, as if by magic, they have their number. Somehow. All along, the administration has touted false numbers of enrollees. All along, the administration has neglected to admit that Obamacare is

The former two-term governor of Florida speaks fluent Spanish, is a convert to Catholicism, and has high name recognition. Jeb could raise millions of dollars over night by just saying “yes” to running. Despite all this, there are strong reasons Republicans should say no to him. 1. His last name is poison. Let’s face it, if Jeb Bush had the last name of Something Else he would have already run for president in 2008 or 2012. According to a recent Washington Post/ABC News poll registered voters were asked if they would definitely NOT vote for Jeb Bush and 50 percent said they would not.
