The Fourth Chainsaw
PJ Media, by Richard Fernandez

Original Article

Posted By:Hazymac, 3/22/2013 9:32:36 PM

The Pax Americana ”is a term applied to the historical concept of relative peace in the Western Hemisphere and later the Western world resulting from the preponderance of power enjoyed by the United States beginning around the start of the 20th century.” For nearly three generations the world population has enjoyed a rising standard of living and the absence of general war. According to administration officials the party’s only just begun. “In September 2010, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton proclaimed a ‘new American Moment’ that would “lay the foundations for lasting American leadership for decades to come.”

Comments:
Juggling four chainsaws is what "Wretchard" is alluding to in this essay, as he discusses Obama´s strategically daft strategy of not modernizing our nuclear arsenal and not pushing ahead with defensive measures against ICBMs while enemies are hard at work "nuking up." If our defensive capabilities are degraded sufficiently, it might not even be necessary to turn American metropolitan areas into molten glass; nuclear blackmail could be even more effective. Obama is confident that he can BS his way to a harmonious One World. Our enemies are laughing at him.

Richard Fernandez aka Wretchard has long been one of the most advanced thinkers on the Web. In September 2003 on the original Belmont Club website he wrote an essay called The Three Conjectures on what the American response might be if an Islamist enemy managed to annihilate an American city with a nuclear strike, and threatened to repeat the atrocity (link below).

http://belmontclub.blogspot.com/2003/09/three-conjectures-pew-poll-finds-40-of.html

I think that an ICBM strike from, say, Iran or Pakistan is much less likely than one or several weapons secreted aboard aircraft, container ships, or even U-Haul trucks after being smuggled into the country. The possibilities are as varied as human imagination can make them. Plus, we have heard of the American "Davy Crockett" 60-pound suitcase miniature atomic bomb and the Russian equivalent that might be sold to a terrorist organization. The snake is out of its lair.

To return to the Three Conjectures, after one successful nuclear strike on America, what would we do to prevent a second strike? Here´s where the "minus one times ten to the ninth power" calculus comes into focus. Considering Obama´s supine, apologetic approach to America´s Islamist enemies, it´s not inconceivable that there would be no military response from the Administration to one flattened American city. Two? I hope we never find out, especially while we´re governed by someone who manifestly despises this nation.

A nuclear strike, biologic weapon, or chemical weapon would result in the US being reduced to just another country on the world stage. This is a change Obama supports. Can anyone say with certainty that he would retaliate? He is all too confident that tough talk is sufficient to contain North Korea and Iran. How would he respond to a terrorist attack that kills thousands? I think he demonstrate his response in Benghazi.

DADE CITY — Runners risked life and limb at Little Everglades Ranch in Dade City as The Great Bull Run — an event modeled after the Spanish tradition of the Running of the Bulls in Pamplona — made its debut in the Tampa area for those brave enough to be chased by stampeding cattle. Great Bull Run founder and director Rob Dickens said an estimated 5,000 to 6,000 spectators and runners came out to run or witness one of seven bull runs on the quarter-mile-long straightaway track. Injuries were minimal, however, there were at least some bumps, bruises and a

WASHINGTON – Former Florida Gov. Charlie Crist is sticking to his support of President Barack Obama’s health overhaul, saying “it’s been great” for the state despite a difficult rollout. In an interview with CNN’s “State of the Union” Crist said Obama has a “compassionate heart” and predicted the public would eventually embrace the health care law. Crist was a Republican when he was governor but he is running as a Democrat against Gov. Rick Scott. He urged members of his new party to fully support Obama during the upcoming elections. Crist acknowledged Florida’s economy had improved under Scott’s watch but

TAMPA — The family of four, two of them elementary school-age children, had dinner on Monday night, a nice meal of bottom round steak. Then they began hallucinating, so badly they called 911, then rushed to the hospital themselves. On Friday, Tampa police announced why: The meat had been laced with LSD. The family bought the meat from the Wal-Mart at 1501 N. North Dale Mabry Highway, just north of Interstate 275, but police said they don´t yet have any idea when or where the meat became tainted with the hallucinogen. “The family has no idea where this may have

KINGSTON - More than 150 years after European colonial powers abolished slavery, a coalition of Caribbean nations is considering legal action to seek a formal apology and monetary compensation. Caribbean leaders meeting next week in St. Vincent are expected to study a broad legal outline for the reparations claim prepared by a British law firm. The subject of reparations has simmered in the Caribbean for many years and opinions are divided. Some see reparations as delayed justice, while others see it as an empty claim and a distraction from modern social problems in Caribbean societies. Slavery ended throughout the Caribbean

DAYTONA BEACH — The 32-year-old pregnant mother who drove the family’s van into the ocean with her three children inside was charged Friday with attempted murder. Sheriff Ben Johnson said it appears that the Ebony Wilkerson was trying to kill herself and her children on Tuesday. As she drove into the ocean, Wilkerson ignored the children’s pleas for help, insisting that she was taking herself and her three children to “a safer place,” according to a statement released by Gary Davidson, sheriff’s spokesman. “She told them to close their eyes and go to sleep,” Johnson said. Three weeks of demonstrations, 18 people killed, scores wounded, hundreds missing and more than 800 arrests, many still imprisoned. This is Venezuela today. The Venezuelan Violence Observatory ranks it as one of the most violent countries in the world, with a homicide rate of 79 per 100,000 inhabitants or more than 24,763 a year. What’s more, 95 percent of the murders go unsolved. Whom do we blame for this travesty? It started in 1998 when Hugo Chavez, a former lieutenant colonel, was elected president, though he had previously led a failed military coup against a democratic government in 1992. Chavez

Vladimir Bukovsky, the legendary Russian dissident who spent 12 years in prisons, labor camps and psychiatric hospitals for his “anti-Soviet activity,” famously faulted Western media in the 1980s for their confusing terminology, which resulted in curious statements about the “Russian” invasion of Afghanistan in 1979 and the protests against it by “Soviet” academician Andrei Sakharov. This linguistic mix-up between the oppressor and the oppressed is resurfacing with Vladimir Putin’s aggression against Ukraine: Many analysts and journalists cite “Russian” threats, the “Russian” invasion and the need for sanctions on “Russia.” The truth is that most Russians oppose intervention in Ukraine. The crisis in the Ukraine, though it has abated for now, has made policymakers rediscover the power of energy production, which has a direct bearing on American strategic strength and leverage on Russia. The more energy America produces, the stronger it is. And the less it has to rely on pure military power. (Snip) Obama up until just now was slamming the brakes on fracking. During his speech to the CPAC crowd on Thursday, Sen. Via Matt Lewis, here’s Maverick once again demonstrating that “cordial relationship” in politico-speak means “two people who can’t publicly admit to hating each other but obviously do.” And it’s a cheap shot. Cruz’s point yesterday at CPAC was that Dole, McCain, and Romney lost because they weren’t conservative enough. That’s not because they’re gutless — he said specifically that they were “good” and “decent” men — but because they’re not committed, full-throated ideologues, even less so when they’re fighting for purple states in a national election. We can debate whether that’s true but there’s nothing offensive in raising the subject.

What’s been said of confession — that it is good for one’s soul but bad for one’s reputation — can also be true of testifying to Congress, so Lois Lerner has chosen to stay silent. Hers, however, is an eloquent silence. The most intrusive and potentially most punitive federal agency has been politicized; the IRS has become an appendage of Barack Obama’s party. Furthermore, congruent with exhortations from some congressional Democrats, it is intensifying its efforts to suffocate groups critical of progressives, by delaying what once was the swift, routine granting of tax-exempt status. So, the IRS, far from repenting

One of the most seismic changes in American politics over the last decade has been the emergence of a sharp generational split among the electorate. The Democratic Party owes its success in the last two presidential elections almost entirely to overwhelming support among the very young, which has overcome continued conservatism among older voters. The Pew Research Institute has dominated the field of exploring the ideological cleavages among different generations. And its latest survey shows again how the liberalism of the youngest voting cohort, millennials, remains firm, and likely to continue to recast the electorate. A few charts from the survey

But since definitions of an "in name only" marriage vary, such as "a marriage of convenience" or "a sexless marriage," and Maraniss failed to explain his claim, it is unclear what he was implying.
