Mr Lee was speaking at a wide-ranging dialogue session organised by Standard Chartered Bank on Wednesday evening. In all my life, I do not expect to meet a wiser man that Lee Kuan Yew. Sixty years ago, Singapore was kicked out of the Malay Federation as being hopelessly poor and lacking in the resources to be able to improve. Lee took control and with lightning speed turned Singapore into the most prosperous community in all Southeast Asia. The price to the individual? A certain loss of personal liberty(comparable to what we are losing in the USA under Obama) and a requirement to work hard. There is no significant government safety net in Singapore. The families of indigents are expected to provide. It would not be a real big leap for me to move back there.

Singapore is importing well educated and skilled legal immigrants, while the USA continues to allow a massive flow of generally uneducated and unskilled illegal aliens to surge over it´s borders or to come here with temporary visas and just stay indefinitely.

Mr. Lee was for decades the most competent head of state in the world. I always wondered why he was so intolerant of dissent when he could have out debated anyone who disagreed with him - while I don´t particularly care for that aspect of his personality or his rule, Singapore stood alone (and still does) in that part of the world for the proposition that if you come there, observe the rules and work hard you will prosper, and if you don´t like the rules nobody is forcing you to come or to stay, and certainly nobody is misleading you about the rules before you get there. So that may not be for me but what he and his government have achieved is spectacular and I always find his insights fascinating.

Rights activists reacted with indignation on Wednesday after Singapore´s High Court rejected a petition to repeal an archaic law criminalising sex between men. In a ruling issued on Tuesday, the court said it was up to parliament to repeal a controversial provision in the penal code known as Section 377A, whose constitutionality has been questioned by a gay couple. During a rally held on Tuesday with workers, Venezuela´s acting President Nicolás Maduro announced a rise in the minimum salary of 38-45% that would be implemented in three stages. The first 20% would be implemented in May, from USD 325.55 to USD 390.66. The next increase (10%) would be adopted in September, bringing salaries up to USD 429.73. A final adjustment would be enforced in November by 5-10%, based on inflation. The president in charge also announced the creation of "workers´ groceries," aimed at bringing state-run food network Mercal to state-run companies so that workers can directly buy foodstuffs at their workplace.
