| North Dakota lawmakers moved Friday to outlaw abortion in the state by passing a resolution defining life as starting at conception. The measure, which has to be approved by voters, is one of a series of anti-abortion resolutions the Republican-controlled Legislature has passed this year despite critics´ insistence that they are unconstitutional and violate the U.S. Supreme Court´s Roe v. Wade ruling legalizing abortion until a fetus considered viable, which is usually at 22 to 24 weeks. (snip) The so-called personhood measure bestows human rights on fertilized human eggs. And yet ND voters keep sending Dems to the Senate, indicating, I guess, that they are OK with a pro-abortion party. Which is it?

This bill puts in on the ballot for the people to vote on. This is the best way to settle the issue.

I noticed that, too, #4. It´s kind of weird, but the farmers seem to be loyal to Democrats because of the price supports and subsidies they received from the government during the last century. Socially, though, people in North Dakota are quite conservative; much more so than even some other red states. Lots of church going folks live in North Dakota.
Perhaps they don´t understand or pay attention to economic issues, but when Heidi Heitkamp begins to attack fracking, the people in the western part of the state won´t like it. They´ll like the roughnecks leaving and the crime rates easing, but they won´t like the high unemployment rates so common in the rest of the country.

It can never become law until the Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade.

I don´t see Roe v. Wade being overturned by this court. If it were, you might be surprised about whether states will outlaw abortion. I suspect very few states will do so.

I think many if not most states would either put limits on abortion or ban it outright. Who in their right mind can favor late-term abortions after the Dr. Gosnell trial? It is ironic that liberal Western European countries like Germany limit abortions to the early stages of pregnancy. It may not be a perfect solution to those who think life begins at conception but it is much better than what we have now.

Greg Hall is safe from government fines – for now. The Catholic deacon who owns American Manufacturing Company in St. Joseph has received a preliminary injunction protecting him from provisions in the Affordable Care Act. The injunction was issued Tuesday in the 8th Circuit of the federal district courts by U.S. District Court Judge John R. Tunheim. In short, he won’t have to start providing insurance that covers contraception, sterilization or abortifacient drugs to his employees.

The idea of addressing gun violence by taxing pistols is being tested at Cook County, Illinois. According to the Sun Times newspaper, a special gun tax kicks in today. The measure is not an April Fool’s Day joke. It is the brainstorm of the president of the County Board, Toni Preckwinkle. It will levy $25 for “on each gun sale in suburban Cook County.” At the rate at which guns seem to be flying off the shelves the idea is that this tax will bring in a sizable chunk of change. The Preckwinkle Tax applies only to the

Oklahoma City - A federal appeals court has granted Hobby Lobby´s request for the entire court to hear its challenge of a requirement that it provide insurance coverage for the morning-after pill and similar emergency contraceptive pills. The Denver-based 10th U.S. Circuit Court handed down the ruling on Friday. Ordinarily, appeals filed with the court are decided by a three-judge panel, but a total of nine judges will hear Hobby Lobby´s appeal. The court also ruled it will hear Hobby Lobby´s appeal on an expedited basis, with oral arguments expected this spring.

"If Jesus were alive today, he would be more inclined to say, ´you know, I didn´t know it all...´" - Rev. Oliver White, Sean Hannity Show, March 27, 2013. In general, most news outlets have provided awful coverage of the Supreme Court proceedings on same-sex marriage. Islamic hard-liners stormed a mosque in suburban Cairo, turning it into torture chamber for Christians who had been demonstrating against the ruling Muslim Brotherhood in the latest case of violent persecution that experts fear will only get worse. Such stories have become increasingly common as tensions between Egypt’s Muslims and Copts mount, but in the latest case, mosque officials corroborated much of the account and even filed a police report. Demonstrators, some of whom were Muslim, say they were taken from the Muslim Brotherhood headquarters in suburban Cairo to a

North Dakota’s governor signed the nation’s strictest anti-abortion measures into law Tuesday, including one statute that would ban most abortions as early as six weeks into a pregnancy. Gov. Jack Dalrymple authorized three bills previously passed by state legislators, the most controversial of which prohibits abortion procedures once a fetal heartbeat is detected, which can happen early in the first trimester. The Republican governor also approved a measure that restricts abortions based on gender selection and genetic abnormalities, such as Down syndrome.

Today the Supreme Court will hear arguments on California’s Proposition 8. Tomorrow it will hear a related case involving the federal Defense of Marriage Act. Each defines marriage as a union between a man and woman. The question is whether the court will use the cases to discover a right to same-sex marriage. We hope they choose a more modest path. What does that mean? At its heart, it means trusting the American people acting through their elected representatives at the state level. The reasons are both practical and constitutional.

Vice President Biden’s hotel bill in Paris — the Drudge Report headlines it at $585,000.50 for a night at the Intercontinental, not including the ride in from the airport — is prompting the futureofcapitalism.com to wonder why Amtrak’s most famous passenger failed to stay at the sprawling palace that serves as the residence of the American ambassador in the Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré. A good question, to which we’d add our own: What was Mr. Biden, whose only constitutional duty is to serve in the Senate as its president, doing in Paris in the first place?

They are among the leading opponents of gay marriage, or as they prefer to be called, defenders of traditional marriage. And they´re trying to stop an increasingly popular movement as it approaches two dates with history next week at the Supreme Court. At times, it can seem a lonely battle.

Michelle Obama has admitted that she is already tired of the bangs she first sported in January. The First Lady said in an interview with Entertainment Tonight: ´Bangs are a day-by-day proposition. They´re starting to grow out, get a little irritating.´ Still, she hasn´t let her hairdo woes get her down. ´It´s okay,´ she said after her initial complaint. ´We´ll be good.´ The first indication that her hairstyle was becoming a burden came about last weekend, when Malia, 14, was spotted adjusting her mother´s hair during the White House Easter Egg Roll.

Recent research indicates that the number of people who do not consider themselves a part of an organized religion is steadily on the rise. Interestingly enough, though the number of those religiously unaffiliated is increasing, there is little to no trend in the number of those who express atheist or agnostic beliefs. People aren’t saying they don’t believe in God. They’re saying they don’t believe in religion. They are not rejecting Christ. They are rejecting the church. This begs the question, “Why are we losing our religion?”

Ms. Smith first relayed how her son, prior to the attack, requested additional security in advance and warned the State Department: He did tell them, ahead of time, he typed it into his little typewriter over there,

Put out an all-points bulletin: Millions of Americans have gone missing from the workforce. Every month that those would-be workers are gone raises the odds that they might never come back, dimming the prospects for future economic growth. The vanishing trend is more than a decade old, but it accelerated during the Great Recession. Throughout 2012, economists held out hope that it had stopped. But then came Friday’s jobs report, and hopes were dashed. The Labor Department reported that the U.S. labor force — everyone who has a job or is looking for one — shrank

Gluten-free diets are all the rage, but they can be dangerous if not done right. What is gluten? It´s the spongy complex of proteins, found naturally in wheat, rye, and barley, that gives elasticity to dough and allows it to rise. When flour is moistened and either kneaded or mixed into dough, gluten molecules form an elastic, microscopic latticework that traps the carbon dioxide produced when yeast ferments, causing dough to inflate like a hot air balloon. Baking hardens the gluten, which helps the finished product keep its shape. Wheat — and gluten — is ubiquitous in the American diet.
