WashPost´s ´On Faith´ Continues Attack on Catholics: Papacy Should ´Fade Into Symbolic Irrelevence´

| As I noted on Monday, the "On Faith" section at the Washington Post is hard at work attacking faithful Catholics by publishing, bit by bit, excerpts of a Sally Quinn interview with Garry Wills, a critic of the church. Well, on Tuesday -- the day of Pope Francis´s installation Mass -- the attack continued with another excerpt in which Wills was given a platform to wish the papacy would become a mere figurehead position, much like the monarch of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. On Faith editor and religious agnostic Sally Quinn opened with the query,

Once again we have wisdom from Sally "sleep your way to the top" Quinn. Its unfortunate that the Catholic hierarchy doesn´t know as much about Christianity as Sally Quinn.

Wills objects to an authoritative pope who tells people what to do and what not to do, but he doesn´t seem to realize he is doing the same thing himself, by decreeing that Queen Elizabeth and the pope can "keep their gorgeous palaces and costumes," and pass into obscurity. He fails to acknowledge all the good work for the poor plus diplomatic work the Vatican does, or the fact that there are sections of the globe where Catholicism matters very much and the pope is revered.

Well, Sally and Garry, here are the reasons that the Catholic Church isn´t irrelevant to you. You say it does good work in education and health. You say the liberal nuns in the U.S. should be left alone. Let´s start with that one. The liberal religious orders in America are DYING. They are NOT attracting young vocations. Which religious orders are attracting vocations...the one´s that are teaching, preaching, and adhering to the doctrines and dogmas of the Church. Okay..next up education and health. I will be very interested and watching what the U.S. bishops do about the mandate. I would not be unduly surprised if we start seeing the closing of Catholic schools, universities, and hospitals if the mandate isn´t rescinded. When the public schools, universities, and hospitals are so over-crowded that the government can´t handle the influx of new students and patients, it will be interesting to see what happens.

I´m confused, is Wills comparing the rarely practiced kissing of a bishop´s ring to the sin of sodomy? I can see why he´s having a difficult time being a Catholic; he doesn´t seem to know what´s imperative for his salvation and what´s not. By the way, I´m curious, would Wills and Quinn have the same opinions if one of the more modern and enlightened (that is, disobedient) cardinals had been chosen?

Even the "liberal" National Catholic Reporter doesn´t like Wills.

I tend to believe WaPo, Wills and Quinn have already begun to fade into irrelevance.

what amazes me is that people like Quinn and Willis believe the Catholic Church should get down into the gutter and believe the same things these two people believe..get with the times...allow abortion...allow gays...same sex marriage... Well for one thing the Catholic Church wuld not be the Catholic Church if it did. I have a great idea...how about Willis and Quinn change their beliefs...in the meantime...I will just ignore them..

Someone should remind Wills that this has been tried before by people who had greater claim to being in the Church (Martin Luther, for example). Wills needs to decide if he identifies with one of those offshoots, or if he´s trying to start his own.

Correct me if I am wrong but I believe the church is the longest-enduring institution in world history. Nearly 2,000 years of attacks, insults, scandals by hypocrites within the church, and constant misrepresentation by its enemies. Who will still be around 100 years from now? Quinn and Wills, or the church?

As whistleblowers came forward on Capitol Hill regarding the potential cover-up surrounding the Benghazi, Libya terrorist attack on Sept. 11, 2012, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney insisted the investigation was “politicized” and “non-substantive.” But he refrained from questioning the congressional witnesses making allegations that the administration has been dismissing. A reporter asked Carney at today’s briefing, “Do you question their motivation?” Carney said, “I don’t. I’m simply saying there has been an ongoing effort to politicize this. But beyond that,

On Wednesday, the Associated Press mischaracterized the Benghazi hearings as merely a Republican event, even though it is an official House committee investigation. In the headline of its report, the Associated Press downplayed the official hearings of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee--that has both Democrats and Republicans on it--into the failures surrounding the 2012 attacks on our embassy personnel in Benghazi, Libya. The AP characterized the official hearings as "GOP hearings," making the proceedings seem like a mere political witch-hunt.

The party that swept into power on promises of transparency and accountability scrambled Wednesday to circle wagons in an extravagant attempt to protect administration officials, the White House and the woman many Democrats hope will be their next nominee for president. Congressional Democrats strenuously tried covering up the inquiry into the botched handling and dishonest aftermath of the terrorist attack on a U.S. facility in Benghazi that left dead our ambassador to Libya and three other Americans.

First lady Michelle Obama on Wednesday said New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) suffers from adulthood obesity and is an example of why her "Let’s Move" campaign is such an important initiative. Speaking Wednesday on the "Today" show, the first lady was asked to comment on reports that Christie secretly underwent a medical operation in February to help him lose weight. "The one thing I will say is that there are millions of people like the governor who struggle with adulthood obesity, and that’s one of the reasons why ´Let’s Move´ is so important,” she said.

For a good idea of how anxious Obamacare supporters are about the law´s rollout, read former White House health adviser Ezekiel Emanuel´s op-ed in The Wall Street Journal this morning: Transforming the U.S. health-care system—which is larger than the economy of France—is one of the most daunting administrative tasks government has ever confronted. There will be bumps in the road; this is inevitable. Laugh if you must but it’s no goofier than the idea that “due process” implies a substantive right to kill a baby in the womb but not five minutes later, after it’s emerged. Bsides, Jackson Lee’s been consistent on this. Back in January 2011, right after the new Republican House majority was sworn in, she started arguing that repealing O-Care would amount to a deprivation of due process under the Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments. There’s a certain ruthless logic in her reaching for the Constitution right after the Democrats’ hold on power began to slip in

What good is a background check that doesn’t actually penalize criminals? Like the rest of Amnesty 2013, it exists only to aid the Democratic Party’s culture of criminality. Their concern is with a clause that would, during the background check process, prohibit immigration officials from forwarding criminal histories to law enforcement for deportation purposes. “The idea is we are supposed to be weeding out the bad apples,” said Steven Camarota, of the Center for Immigration Studies. “But the big problem with the bill is it does not require those denied the amnesty to leave the country.

When it first became clear that the CIA’s Benghazi talking points had been altered, many of us viewed the White House as the prime suspect. After all, it served President Obama’s political purposes to claim, at the height of a political campaign in which he was taking credit for the fall of al Qaeda, that the death of a U.S. ambassador was down to spontaneous outrage over a video, rather than pre-planned terrorism. It turns out, however, that the State Department was the prime culprit. It was State that pushed back hard against the original talking points.

Republican lawmakers, who have spent months seeking to tie President Obama to last year’s deadly attack on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, are increasingly focusing their probe on a new target: former secretary of state Hillary Rodham Clinton. The GOP-led investigation of the Sept. 11, 2012, assaults that killed U.S. Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens and three others now centers heavily on the State Department and whether officials there deliberately misled the public about the nature of the assault. Three State Department officials are scheduled to testify before a House committee on Wednesday about the Benghazi attack and its aftermath.

Sanford defeated Colbert Busch 54 percent to 45 percent, according to full unofficial results. Sanford, who has never lost an election, returns to the 1st District seat he held for three terms from 1995-2001. There was tragic incompetence, plainly, in the Obama administration’s handling of the Benghazi attacks, and even possibly some political calculation. It is a record that may well come to haunt Hillary Clinton, the first Secretary of State to lose an ambassador in the field in more than three decades, if she runs for president in 2016. But the obvious Republican effort to turn this inquiry into the Democratic (Obama) version of the Iraq intelligence scandal that has tarred the GOP since the George W.
