| Risë Stevens, the internationally renowned mezzo-soprano who had a 23-year career with the Metropolitan Opera, where she practically owned the role of Carmen during the 1940s and ’50s, died on Wednesday at her home in Manhattan. She was 99. Her son, Nicolas Surovy, confirmed the death. On the Met’s roster from 1938 to 1961, Ms. Stevens was a superstar in an era when operatic superstardom was conferred mostly on sopranos and tenors. A Bronx native from a modest background, she was widely admired as a populist who help democratize the rarefied world of opera.

In *Going My Way* she does some scenes from Carmen. Great American classical singer. Always a lady. Will all the more treasure my old taped recording of her Carmen songs. Hope she is now singing in Heaven.

I love the scene in Going My Way where she´s talking out to "Chuck" about their last communications and she comes out and sees his collar; the look of reverence in her eyes is done so well.

Loved this dear lady and wonderful voice - Carmen, Samson and Delilah - I listened the Met every Saturday afternoon, despite my Dad´s strenuous objections. Loved opera and still do.

And, thanks to OP, she now has new fans. She was already retired from the Met when I was old enough to pay attention to such things but it has been a joy to learn about her and listen to recordings at Youtube. She had such an expressive face, and all her language training sure paid off. I get the impression that she was a terrific person to sing and work with - no hint of ego problems at all. There is a lovely interview with her from a couple of years ago and she was still very poised and lovely even then.

The Sacramento County Coroner´s office has released the name of the man whose body was discovered Monday morning hanging from rope outside the 16th floor of a downtown building. He was identified as Craig Michael Fugate, 30, of Vancouver, Wash. The coroner´s website lists the cause of death as undetermined. Sacramento police spokeswoman Michele Gigante said Fugate apparently died accidentally while trying to vandalize the building´s exterior. Battalion Chief Craig Wiedenhoeft, of the Sacramento Fire Department, said Fugate accidentally asphyxiated himself.

RUSH: Folks, I don´t know how else to categorize this. We are living in a dying country. I don´t know how else to categorize what´s happening -- 88,000 new jobs. The unemployment rate, because of a terrible statistic, is down to 7.6%. The number of people in this country who are not working is shameful. Ninety million Americans are no longer in the workforce. Ninety million. People not in the labor force grew by 663,000, and now 90 million. That´s the labor force participation rate. This is 1979 levels.
