Last Fall, when I was on my way home from B&B, I saw someone on E. 17th St. walking a pig on a leash.

Okay, call me weird, but I grew up on a farm and we had a few pigs. Maybe ours were just strange, but I found them to be dirty, mean and the odors they emit are sometimes pretty vile. I know that if you fall into horse or cow dung (can I say that?) you can wash out the smell no problem, but if you get pig dung on anything you should probably just burn it. I could never imagine having a pig for a pet.

These so called miniature pigs can get larger than most dogs and their habits aren´t really suitable for urban life.
There is also a growing movement to keep backyard poultry. Chickens can be fun to watch, don´t need a lot of space and have the benefit of producing fresh eggs. Some municipalities have changed their ordinances to allow urban residents to keep chickens but not roosters.

SAN FRANCISCO — California lawmakers are considering taking some tax exemptions away from youth groups that do not accept gay, transgender or atheist members — a move intended to pressure the Boy Scouts of America to lift its ban on gay Scouts and troop leaders. Some cities have withdrawn free rent and other subsidies from the Boy Scouts over the years, but legislation introduced by state Sen. Ricardo Lara would make California the first state to target the Scouts for its anti-gay policy. The Long Beach Democrat´s bill, SB 323, is scheduled for its first committee hearing on Wednesday.

It´s the spongy complex of proteins, found naturally in wheat, rye, and barley, that gives elasticity to dough and allows it to rise. When flour is moistened and either kneaded or mixed into dough, gluten molecules form an elastic, microscopic latticework that traps the carbon dioxide produced when yeast ferments, causing dough to inflate like a hot air balloon. BOISE, Idaho — Authorities in eastern Idaho are investigating the shooting deaths of two men and a woman whose bodies were found in a home that contained a marijuana grow operation. The deaths took place sometime between Thursday afternoon and evening by someone who had some type of relationship with the victims, the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office said. The bodies were discovered Friday outside Holbrook, a town of about 400 people just north of the Idaho-Utah state line. Authorities said a 2-month-old was found under the arm of one of the victims — 27-year-old Yavette Chivon Carter.
