Shutting Down Tehran
Washington Free Beacon, by Adam Kredo

Sens. Mark Kirk (R., Ill.) and Joe Manchin (D., W.Va.) on Thursday jointly introduced an amendment aimed at cutting off Iran’s access to a European financial institution that has permitted Tehran to skirt Western economic sanctions. The measure aims to force the European Union to cut off Tehran’s access to the European Central Bank (ECB), which allows Iran to conduct financial transactions in euros. The loophole has allowed the cash-strapped Iranian regime easy access to money in Europe. The EU has discussed cutting off Iran’s access to the ECB and its Target2 system,

Comments:
Good news: stop Iran from getting money needed money for their nuclear program. Bad news: EU trying to stop this. Who exactly are are friends when the mushroom cloud suddenly shows up?

Tony Abbott says rescue teams have homed in on signals they are now certain belong to the black box flight recorder from missing Malaysian flight MH370. The Prime Minister, who is in Shanghai, spoke after an aviation expert claimed the breakthrough discovery had been made. Mr Abbott said they were now engaged in a race against time to find the black box as the signal starts to fade. He will meet personally tonight with Chinese President Xi Jinping to update him on the latest efforts to find the black box, hinting it would soon be located. “We have very much narrowed down the search area...we have now had a series of detections,

Perth, Australia - Australia’s prime minister says searchers hunting for the missing Malaysian jetliner are confident underwater signals that have been picked up are coming from the jet’s black box. Tony Abbott told reporters while on an official visit to China that Australian authorities are confident they know the location of the black box from the plane that disappeared without a trace on March 8 during a flight from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to Beijing. The plane’s black boxes, or flight data and cockpit voice recorders, could help solve the mystery of why Flight 370 veered so far off course.

It´s a label she has turned to on multiple occasions - most notably when she first stepped out following the birth of Prince George - and tonight, the Duchess of Cambridge dazzled in her favourite British designer, Jenny Packham. Washington - Even when Sylvia Mathews Burwell was in her early 30s, friends speculated that she might return to her native Hinton, W.Va., and run for governor someday. After all, she had been a Rhodes scholar, and her mother — who later became mayor of Hinton, pop. 2,600 — had driven her daughter’s interest in politics. So far that has not happened, but plenty of other things under two presidents have. On Friday, President Obama is to nominate Ms. Burwell, currently director of the White House Office of Management and Budget, to take over one of the largest and most unwieldy parts of the federal bureaucracy as secretary of health and

If you really want to appreciate the good work that House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan and the House Republicans did Thursday in passing their budget, consider the Pencil Story. A friend of mine teaches a class that includes a lot of children from families caught up in the government welfare system, a system that encourages dependency and discourages self-reliance. She told me that the students sometimes come to class on test day without even bringing a pencil. Without a pencil, the kids face getting a zero on the test, but that, my teacher-friend said, was the point. Because they know the public schools will push them along

When David Letterman announced last week that he was stepping down as the host of CBS´ "Late Show" in 2015, speculation went into overdrive about who would replace him. On Thursday, the rumor mill was put to rest when the network announced that Stephen Colbert had been given the gig. (Snip) Colbert, 49, has played the role of an ultra-right wing talk-show host, a character he´s almost never broken from during his time on Comedy Central. In an interview Thursday with CBS Radio's Dan Raviv, CBS Chairman and CEO Les Moonves said that "Late Show" viewers can expect to see Colbert be himself in his new role.

Black female lawmakers have now weighed in on an Army controversy over what one soldier calls “racially biased” hairstyle regulations. Sixteen female members of the Congressional Black Caucus signed a letter Thursday to Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel, stating that the changes are “discriminatory rules targeting soldiers who are women of color,” the Associated Press reported. The rule in question, Army Regulation 670-1, bans hairstyles that require twists and dreadlocks, among other options preferred by minority soldiers. Sgt. A panel of House Republicans voted on Thursday to hold former IRS official Lois Lerner in contempt of Congress, citing her refusal to answer questions about the agency’s targeting of conservative organizations for special scrutiny. The 21-12 vote by the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, which has been probing the alleged abuse since the scandal erupted last spring, broke along party lines: each of the panel’s Republicans voted to censure Lerner, while the Democrats on the committee opposed the resolution. The vote comes a day after Republicans on a separate committee formally requested the Department of Justice to

How does the Republican Party establishment choose its presidential candidate? Typically, constitutionalists accuse their establishment rivals of being moderate, risk-averse, stubborn old fools who lack faith in conservative principles. This is a soothing interpretation, as it begins from the hypothesis that the contest between conservatives and the GOP elite is a family feud. But there is another hypothesis -- less soothing, but, at least from an outsider´s bird´s-eye view, more reconcilable with the facts. This hypothesis is that America has reached a stage of progressive soft despotism in which the only important family feud in national politics is between the fundamentally

A caveat right off the bat: RAND’s estimate only runs through March 28 whereas the actual deadline for signing up was March 31st. Given the crush of traffic on Healthcare.gov in late March, many more people could have signed up over those last three days than were captured by these numbers. On the other hand, the White House was claiming six million sign-ups as of March 27. There’s no way to reconcile that with RAND’s data. One of them is wrong. Maybe both, in fact. There’s a big spike in Medicaid, just as everyone expected. There’s a less big but

A new review is questioning the effectiveness of two key drugs enlisted in the fight against influenza and in turn the investments by governments to stockpile the drugs in the event of a global flu outbreak. The antiviral drugs Tamiflu (oseltamivir) and Relenza (zanamivir ) are commonly used to treat influenza in healthy adults and children. In the case of Tamiflu, the drug does shorten symptoms of influenza by about half a day - as the manufacturer suggests - but there is insufficient evidence to support claims that it reduces hospital admissions or serious complications, such as confirmed pneumonia or
