Boys Hardest Hit
Wall Street Journal, by James Taranto

Original Article

Now and then truth emerges in surprising places, such as the pages of the New York Times and the work of Third Way, a goo-goo "moderate" Beltway think tank heretofore best known for its pioneering efforts in the crucially important sphere of seating arrangements. Today´s Times reports on a new Third Way study that is highly important--no sarcasm here--and that picks up on some of this column´s frequent themes. Here´s the abstract: A new gender gap has emerged--one where girls and young women outperform boys and young men in both education and key aspects of the workforce.

This is garbage in a lot of ways, in my experience. My father was raised by a single mother (a widow). In the depression she did everything in her power to raise her 2 girls and one boy. He turned out pretty well, the army, college, a starter job that led to promotions. He stayed for 39 years.

In my 1950s family, my mother ran the household, my dad ran the house. He worked, he remodeled, he did the yard work, and he was boss, no questions. My parents were very active in the church, elders, "circles", Sunday School, etc. They lived Biblically. I remember daddy taking us to work with him when he couldn´t spend time with us on weekends and in the evening. He read to us. He taught some of us (all girls) how to use tools, we helped him remodel. He could do everything (really, he could do a lot), and he explained it to those of us willing to learn. Imagine, remodeling an old house, with a couple of small girls hanging out with you. He taught us how to do things, and then let us do it.

Anyhow, he was a loving altogether there father. That´s what it took to be a good father then, and it is what it takes today.

A man who is taught to value himself, work hard, and value himself, will be a success in his life.

#1, that was a different, much better time.

I despise what the feminists have done to this country. In the early 80´s they demanded that the educational system be modified to focus on women, leaving the young men behind. Women began to enter the work force as affirmative action candidates, further demoralizing the men. It didn´t matter if the men were more talented. The quota system had kicked in, talent meant nothing, skin color and sex were the primary concern. It has only gotten worse.

The world we grew up in where hard work, dedication and talent determined how far you advanced no longer exist. Quota´s are the most important consideration. The end result is the destruction of our society.

I fear for my children, both boys. As a woman with advanced degrees, I struggled to balance family and work. Most of the women I worked with realized as they got older that despite their best efforts, the ability to successfully maintain that balance was difficult at best. We will never be able to get back that time in our kids´ lives.

I will never forgive the feminists for destroying this country in their own perverse interests.

BTW, I am married to a wonderful man who was fully engaged as a father.

Conservative Sens. Ted Cruz and Rand Paul top the biggest Tea Party presidential poll yet, while moderates New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush are dumped at the bottom, undermining their hopes of being 2016 crossover candidates. The online poll of 62,000 grassroots activists provided exclusively to Secrets finds that conservatives and Tea Party organizers stand fully behind the heroes of their movement, including outspoken surgeon Ben Carson, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker and 2008 vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin. But the poll for nation´s largest Tea Party group, TheTeaParty.net, and the influential conservative organization Contract from America drenched

Speaker John Boehner will bring a clean debt ceiling bill to the floor today, marking the end of an era in which House Republicans sought spending cuts and reforms in equal or greater amount to the increase in the debt ceiling. President Obama and congressional Democrats had said they were opposed to even discussing spending cuts in the context of the debt ceiling. But Republicans couldn´t even come together with their own plan. “It´s a recognition that we don´t have 218 votes. When you don´t have 218 votes, you have nothing,” Boehner said in a press conference. House leadership began the effort

A fresh start for Hillary

WASHINGTON — As Hillary Rodham Clinton mulls a second presidential bid, liberals are closely watching whether the onetime supporter of the Iraq war moves to the left or straddles the center. Democrats say economic issues such as raising the minimum wage and protecting Social Security have become paramount for anyone aiming to lead the party after years of tough economic times. During the 2008 primary campaign against Barack Obama, Clinton was hurt by her stand on the Iraq war while she was a senator. But she burnished her image among party loyalists during four years at the State Department in the

Powerful winds in the Pacific Ocean, which have driven surface heat deep underwater, could be the reason behind the current ‘pause’ in global warming. This is according to a joint Australian and U.S. study which has looked at why there has been a slowdown in the planet’s global average surface temperature over the past decade. Their research shows that trade winds in central and eastern parts of the Pacific have caused warm surface water to sink to the ocean´s depths, reducing the amount of heat in the atmosphere. Last year, scientists on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) said the pace of

A Nasa spacecraft orbiting the red planet has found the ´strongest indication´ that liquid water may still exist on the Martian surface. Images taken by Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter reveal ´finger-like´ markings on Martian slopes. Experts say that although they do not yet have a ´smoking gun´, they believe the markings are made by minerals which could not have left without flowing liquid. ´The features are dark, finger-like markings that advance down some Martian slopes when temperatures rise,´ Nasa said. The new clues include corresponding seasonal changes in iron minerals on the same slopes and a survey of ground temperatures and other traits at active

´ObamaCare" is useful shorthand for the Affordable Care Act not least because the law increasingly means whatever President Obama says it does on any given day. His latest lawless rewrite arrived on Monday as the White House decided to delay the law´s employer mandate for another year and in some cases maybe forever. ObamaCare requires businesses with 50 or more workers to offer health insurance to their workers or pay a penalty, but last summer the Treasury offered a year-long delay until 2015 despite having no statutory authorization. Like the individual mandate, the employer decree is central to ObamaCare´s claim of

Big Government: A 20-year-old memo says Hillary Clinton backed a single-payer socialist health system, believing ObamaCare-like mega-regulation to be "a crock." As president, she´d double down on government control. It´s buried over 60 paragraphs into Alana Goodman´s investigative article in the Washington Free Beacon this week about unpublished documents exposing Clinton´s ruthlessness. Among the papers of Hillary adviser and close friend Diane Blair at the University of Arkansas is an account of a Feb. 23, 1993 White House dinner Blair attended. Is Barack Obama trying to shift alliances in the Middle East away from traditional allies and toward Iran? Robert Kaplan, author and geopolitical analyst for the Stratford consulting firm, thinks so. In a realclearworld.com article, Kaplan argues that the Obama administration sees the recently elected Iranian President Hassan Rouhani "as a potential Deng Xiaoping, someone from within the ideological solidarity system who can, measure-by-stealthy-measure, lead his country away from ideology and toward internal reform." Such a development, he goes on, is "something that could, in turn, result in an understanding with the West." That of course is not what the president and Secretary

Deja Vu: As the U.S. defense posture continues to slump, several onetime allies are getting nervous about growing threats and starting to rearm. Not to be alarmist, but isn´t that what happened just before World War II? It´s no exaggeration to say that President Obama, by slashing defense spending, is encouraging other nations to step up their arms programs to fill the growing void left by a shrinking U.S. military. The numbers are stark. According to a recent report by the Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments, U.S. defense outlays hit a post-World War II high in 2010. Since then, after inflation,

Long before the scandals — Woody taking off with Mia’s adopted teen daughter Soon-Yi, Mia accusing Woody of molesting their 7-year-old daughter, Dylan — the Allen-Farrow family was regarded as the ultimate cosmopolitan clan, a multiracial brood of 11 children,

BAGHDAD — A group of Sunni militants attending a suicide bombing training class at a camp north of Baghdad were killed on Monday when their commander unwittingly conducted a demonstration with a belt that was packed with explosives, army and police officials said. The militants belonged to a group known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, or ISIS, which is fighting the Shiite-dominated army of the Iraqi government, mostly in Anbar Province. But they are also linked to bomb attacks elsewhere and other fighting that has thrown Iraq deeper into sectarian violence.

President Obama has broken many promises. One that he has not broken is his boast that he would "fundamentally transform America." He and his fellow Democrats are on the verge of doing just that by turning us into a nation of loafers. A loafer is an idle person who lives off others. Barack Obama seemingly has no problem with such people. He might even relate to them. He does have a serious problem with his own work ethic, and finds work boring. This deceitful approach enabled President Obama run for reelection in 2012 on the spurious promise of extending insurance coverage to the poor and those with pre-existing conditions without being held accountable for the problems with the law that would only become apparent in his second term.
