Amen, Rep. Chaffetz. I am positive my federal employee relatives will heartily agree. I think we should all let our Congresmen know we will be watching to see if they support this bill!

Collect unpaid taxes from federal employees. Reopen America´s WH to it´s citizens, keep law breaking aliens in jail. Seems like a no brainer, no wonder they can´t figure it out.

I´m torn on this. If one buys into the notion of equal protection under the law, then all delinquent taxpayers should be treated the same. Their wages should be garnished, their property seized, etc. if they´ve been judged to owe a tax bill and won´t or can´t pay it in full right away.

On the other hand, it´s galling that federal employees, who make more than their peers in the private sector, aren´t paying their fair share.

Worthless posturing as there will be a very liberal definition of the phrase: “seriously tax delinquent.”

Seriously delinquent means if a Democrat hasn´t paid taxes in the last 15 years AND gets caught, for Republicans, if you are 15 minutes late paying THIS year´s taxes.

I think this won´t go anywhere, but it´s worth doing.

This is another one of those situations where we are trying to address a lack of law enforcement with another law.

That said, it does make for some good discussion and it will be interesting to see what happens to this bill. This kind of retribution against wrong do-ers makes good theater for the lo-fo voters.

I would include an amendment that also bars any such people from holding cabinet positions, like for instance, Treasury Secretary.

These slugs should be double fined. Why hasn´t IRS put them on payroll deduction already?

Wonder if this applies to the president, congress, and all their appointees and aides?

And while we´re at it, can we talk about the $67 BILLION in waste found recently. Greta has the list if they can´t find it. Issa comes on her show, gets beat up after giving myriad excuses of why nothing is getting done, and probably laughs all the way back home. Or he´ll call a meeting or write a letter about it tomorrow. [SPIT!]

The cynic in me tells me that this thing will never pass. Enough noise will be made about it that the uninformed voters will think it was passed. "It passed the House today..." is the phrase that the uninformed voter will believe means that it has become law because they don´t know the difference in the Senate and the House and how our government works. But we know that as the big bill it is part of is passed back and forth this part will disappear and never be spoken of again.

Tomorrow I will go to my weekly lunch which has several uninformed voters and I am sure I will have to explain to them that it is Cypress that is levying a tax on savings and not the Republicans in the US. I already heard one of them grumbling about it at the coffee pot.

If the uninformed voters did not vote they would be a source of much amusement.

The government, as their employer, has the right to fire them for something like this (unless they are union, of course). It is not an issue of equal protection since employees have no proprietary right in their jobs.

Make it a condition of employment. Current employees have defined number of years to come in to compliance. Mechanism to enforce is cross reference within the agencies. Not discriminatory.

Fined and fired, no work around, no excuse, no grace period, no exception.

So apparently for some, private employers should also be able to pry into their employees´ tax records and fire them if their employee is delinquent on their federal taxes and subject to enforcement action. What´s good for federal employees should be good for the private employee, nicht wahr? What´s next, debtors´ prisons?

Employers generally don´t need any reason to fire someone (unless some anti-discrimination law applies). It wouldn´t be easy (or legal) for them to "dig into" confidential tax records. But if they learned someone was delinquent through other means, they would have the right to fire them. Businesses have enough trouble getting rid of bad employees without adding a protected class for tax scofflaws.

Are they paying daily interest on those taxes like the rest of US ?

What does seriously delinquent mean? They haven´t paid their taxes in 20 years?

"Seriously delinquent" apparently means that a tax lien has been filed. What if they don´t own property in their own name so that there is nothing on which to file a tax lien? This sounds like a Charlie Rangle ploy. Rangle is seriously delinquent, so how will this help? The IRS can´t file a tax lien in the Dominican Republic. Assets will be moved offshore.

We don´t need a new bill. We need the IRS to do its job and for politicians to quit meddling to protect their staff. I´d give a break to military members who get into arrears, especially while they are in combat assignments or overseas.
