| Cypriot officials have said the country´s banks, which were closed to prevent mass withdrawals, will remain shut until at least Tuesday. On Wednesday afternoon the cabinet began an emergency meeting to discuss alternatives to an EU-IMF bailout deal rejected by parliament on Tuesday. Germany says banks in Cyprus may never reopen if a bailout is not agreed. [Snip] Reports say the government is considering imposing capital controls to prevent funds leaving Cyprus when banks are reopened. Monday 25 March is a scheduled bank holiday, and Thursday and Friday have also been declared bank holidays. The stock exchange also remains closed.

Just wanted to be sure you saw the part that says, "Germany says banks in Cyprus may never reopen if a bailout is not agreed."
Beware precedents or even the possibility of a precedent like that one.

Only a PhD economist, an Ivy League grad, or a career Democrat politician could think that a government grab of people´s bank accounts could result in anything besides financial chaos. The old saw about too much book larnin´ and not enough common sense applies here with a vengeance. What in the world did the bureaucrats who dreamed up this scheme think that ordinary people were going to do? Sit still and let their money be stolen from them without doing anything to hold on to it? Cyprus may be a nothing country in the eyes of many Americans - but a money grab like this has worldwide reverberations. Now people everywhere are starting to wonder even more if their deposits will be safe, wherever they are.
The people responsible for this fiasco really ought to be charged with a crime and prosecuted if there is something on the books to use against them. In any event they should be removed from positions of public authority and responsibility and never allowed to acquire them again. They are a menace to the financial and social stability of the entire world.

It is time to recognize that the European Union is totally without ideas or direction on how to solve their financial mess. Perhaps this will serve as a wake-up call to all of us that a government big enough to give us everything we want is a government big enough to take everything away!

Never re-open the banks? Would that mean the state (The EU) will just take everything rather than allow the citizens to run on the banks and get nothing anyway? What a lunatic mess they have created and now they have no way to clean it up.

I wonder when the geniuses in charge will figure out that the longer the banks stay closed, the more freaked out the depositors will get?

Maybe the only hope for the Cypriots is to become a Russian sattelite - the EU can´t do anything for them, their major industry is international banking and their banks are more insolvent than the usual insolvent banks.

A perfect storm from overly complex and lazy governments. The EU, the ECB, the bank guarantee funds, and individual national governments are all involved.
And each has some independence but different goals.
After three years or so they have not solved anything for Greece or Spain or Italy. Ireland? Cyprus? Who is next?
The plan of the day? Penalize savers while confusing everyone and paralyze commerce by closing the banks.
The plan for everyday? Blame others.

The team found that being left alone to breed on its own was key. The discovery raises hope that other damaged reefs could ´regenerate´. Recent research indicates that the number of people who do not consider themselves a part of an organized religion is steadily on the rise. Interestingly enough, though the number of those religiously unaffiliated is increasing, there is little to no trend in the number of those who express atheist or agnostic beliefs. North Korea’s young leader Kim Jong-un is waiting for United States President Barack Obama to make a phone call to Pyongyang to discuss easing tensions on the Korean peninsula, according to Russia’s news agency Itar-Tass. Gluten-free diets are all the rage, but they can be dangerous if not done right. What is gluten? It´s the spongy complex of proteins, found naturally in wheat, rye, and barley, that gives elasticity to dough and allows it to rise. When flour is moistened and either kneaded or mixed into dough, gluten molecules form an elastic, microscopic latticework that traps the carbon dioxide produced when yeast ferments, causing dough to inflate like a hot air balloon.
