Jedi knights ´to make Scotland

Telegraph [UK], by John Bingham

The claim by the Free Church of Scotland raises the prospect of English Star Wars enthusiasts flocking – or possibly flying – to Gretna Green for ceremonies complete with guards of honour wielding light sabres instead of swords. Other groups which could also soon be in line to host weddings in Scotland include the Flat Earth Society, which rejects evidence that the world is round – a view once held by the Christian church. The Church´s predictions came as it launched an attack on plans by the First Minister, Alex Salmond, for a new class of “belief” ceremonies –

Way too strange for this good Southern Baptist.

"Flat Earth Society, which rejects evidence that the world is round – a view once held by the Christian church."

A stupid myth, and one easily disproved. The Latin word for the Earth which was used by both the Romans and the Catholic Church from its very beginning was Orbis Terrarum, meaning "Globe of the World."

The Catholic Church never had a "Flat Earth" doctrine because 1) its not a religious matter and 2) they always knew it was round.

Jeffery Burton Russell wrote a book called called "Inventing the Flat Earth" his historical finding that there is no mention of people believing the Earth was flat till the 19th century, in which anti-religious writers claimed that the Medieval Church believed the Earth was flat to discredit Catholicism. Sadly, people believe 19th century propagandists despite the fact that evidence is overwhelmingly against them.

So far, this thread seems to illustrate an old, and somewhat obscure, saying...

"It´s an ill wind that blows no good."

Meaning, no matter how bad something seems, some bit of good may come of it.

#1 and #2 both provide the quips...
#3 provides some worthwhile elucidation...
(as Johnny Carson would say regarding the Flat Earth information...
"I did not know that.")

You´ve Mary Tyler Moored...
taken a nothing thread, and suddenly made it all seem worthwhile.

Meanwhile, if these Wannabe Jedi´s seek some intergalactic action...
the next time a celestial stray makes a near-Earth encounter...
they can kiss their asteroids Buh-Bye!

Emanuel and Holder Now More
Friends Than Frenemies
Wall Street Journal, by Devlin Barrett    Original Article

As colleagues in the Obama administration, Attorney General Eric Holder and Rahm Emanuel clashed repeatedly, including one infamous incident in which they cursed each other out. Yet the relationship has thawed considerably since Mr. Emanuel became mayor of Chicago. In the latest sign of the new partnership, they had a friendly meeting in Washington this week to discuss anti-crime strategies. As “frenemies’’ in the White House, Messrs. Holder and Emanuel repeatedly sparred on terrorism policy issues – particularly when Mr. Emanuel, then White House chief of staff, thought Mr. Holder’s efforts to close Guantanamo prison and bring suspects for the 2001

Mexican drug kingpin Guzman

Mexican drug kingpin Joaquin "Shorty" Guzman won a temporary injunction to block his extradition to the United States where he faces narcotics and arms trafficking charges, a federal judge ruled on Tuesday. Guzman, who was Mexico´s most wanted criminal and boss of the feared Sinaloa Cartel, was caught in the beach resort of Mazatlan with help from U.S. agents in a pre-dawn raid on Saturday. The dramatic capture ended his reign as one of the world´s most notorious organized crime bosses, and was a major victory for the Mexican government in a long, brutal war. According to a Mexican justice official, Guzman´s lawyers

Washington´s green revolving door keeps on spinning. President Obama’s Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood has left the administration and joined an electric bus company he subsidized and praised while in office. Proterra Inc. makes buses that require no gasoline or diesel – they run on electricity and fuel cells. You can see why electric buses would appeal to cities that want to clean the air and reduce fuel usage: City buses run a predictable number of miles a day, averting worries about dead batteries. Also, a fleet of buses creates economies of scale that can make recharging infrastructure economical. Proterra

It is the night of August 15, 1973. I’m at Washington’s Sheraton-Park Hotel, now the Marriott-Wardman. The occasion is the annual convention of Young Americans for Freedom (YAF), formed 12 years earlier by, among others, William F. Buckley Jr. (Snip)Buckley, Evans, Tyrrell, Kristol: it was my great good fortune, I now realize, to be getting a glimpse of American conservatism’s past, present, and future. And this was on the high end of things. That night, and in many days and nights to come, I would be, as we would say at that old farmhouse in Indiana, “among the intellectualoids.” But this

SAN FRANCISCO -- Radiation from the Fukushima nuclear disaster has not yet reached ocean waters along the Pacific coast, but low levels of radioactive cesium from the stricken Japanese power plant could arrive by April, scientists reported Monday. The report came even as some Internet sites continue claiming that dangerously radioactive ocean water from Fukushima is showing up along California beaches - reports that have been denied by health officials and scientists since they first surfaced more than a month ago. Ken Buesseler, a chemical oceanographer at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution on Cape Cod, Mass., reported that four coastal monitoring sites

KIEV – When the history of the bloody turbulence in Ukraine is written, a 26-year-old who learned combat skills in the army cadets may be recorded as the man who made up Viktor Yanukovich’s mind to cut and run. Cars toot a welcome and passers-by press the hand of Volodymyr Parasiuk, a boyish-looking individual who finds it embarrassing to be called a hero. He reserves that title for his comrades and other protesters among the 80 or so people killed on the capital’s streets last week in three days of fighting against Yanukovich’s police. Those pursuing three authoritarian agenda items once considered unthinkable emanating from an administration which has become openly hostile to what once were our basic freedoms can already hang “Mission (Partially) Accomplished” banners on their walls. First, there are the ongoing revelations about the government’s accumulation of digital mountains of personal information on citizens’ daily lives. If there’s a positive result from this, it would be that many Americans have become a bit more careful about their data trail. But the good news ends there. After a conversation about politics, my grandmother and I used to say, “Isn’t it terrible how Republican we are? Aren’t we just hard-bitten, incorrigible Republicans? Isn’t it terrible?” Yes, it is. I am so Republican, I sometimes worry about myself. I never wanted to be a partisan (and I never wanted to be a Republican, though that’s another, if related, story). I would rather be a nice above-the-fray type. “A pox on both their houses” and all that. David S. Broder, the late “dean” of the Washington press corps, seemed to float above the parties. It has the makings of a royal mess for “King Barack.” Monday morning’s Supreme Court argument about the Environmental Protection Agency’s authority to regulate greenhouse gases went badly for the Obama administration — so much so that the real question before the justices seemed to be how severe the EPA’s loss would be. The administration’s solicitor general, Donald Verrilli, pleaded with the justices to recognize the “urgent problem” of climate change, because the “threat to future generations gets worse” with each passing year.
