Despite abortion views, Biden, Pelosi receive Communion in Vatican Mass

| Vice President Joseph R. Biden and House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi both received Communion during the Mass to celebrate the installation of Pope Francis in spite of their pro-choice position on abortion. The vice president’s office confirmed Tuesday night that both he and Mrs. Pelosi took Communion during the Mass at St. Peter’s Square in Rome. Some Catholics argue that politicians whose positions on abortion and contraception conflict with church teachings should not receive communion. “Vice President Biden and Nancy Pelosi should certainly not receive Communion, either at the papal installation or anywhere else.

Comments: Very disappointing since the Pope has said they shouldn´t be allowed. At large congregations, eucharistic ministers dole out communion. Bet they lined up in front of them.

Absolutely shameful and certainly discredits the new Pope at the beginning of his reign. He has for years preached, while Bishop and Cardinal in Argentina, that politicians who back abortion and perverted marriage should not be allowed to receive communion.
That sermon just went down the drain!

OP is correct. Many of the Extraordinary minister of the Eucharist (proper title of a lay person who distributes the Eucharist)who distributed communion at the papal installation yesterday wouldn´t know Biden and Pelosi shouldn´t receive the Eucharist. Biden and Pelosi will receive their just rewards at a different time and place, not of their choosing.

I sometimes have the privilege of distributing Communion in Mass. If Pelosi comes into my line, I will - as discreetly as possible - lean in and ask, "Is it true that you´ve renounced your advocacy for on-demand abortion rights?" And if she doesn´t say ´yes´, I will give her the out-of-Communion blessing instead of the host.
If it happens, I´ll let y´all know whether I get dismissed from that ministry.

It is not up to the Pope to police little problems like Biden and Pelosi. It is up to their respective local Bishops to shepherd them and keep them from going to Hell. If they ignore or scorn the pleadings of their Bishops then their fate is their own decision.

Pelosie and Biden are not little problems and are overlooked just like the paedophile priests. Abortion is actually worse. This is another stain on the Catholic Church and we will see how the new Pope reacts. There is a need for all of us to stand up against evil. It does take guts, however. We know them (unfortunately), but did they? I can only hope when those 2 get back here, if they ever step into a church again, they are refused communion as per Pope Francis.

Now the Pope has suddenly become a CINO or a RINO or a "mittens" or whatever cutsey name is today´s favorite?

It only took 11 replies to bring up pedophile priests (sigh). Let it go bigots, let it go. At this point it´s making you look pretty petty. The fact is the number of offender priests equal the number of offenders on the staff of Yale. This was a homosexual issue with post pubescent boys also known as pedarest not pedophilia. The church put safeguards in place when this came to light so all these cases stem prior to 1990. However none of these facts will deter bigots from bringing this up again and again. Piglosi and Biden taking communion is NOT a stain on the church, it´s a stain on them. We conservatives are big on personal responsibility, at least most of us are.

Thank you, #16.
You´ll notice Biden and Pelosi didn´t get communion from the Pope himself. They wouldn´t have dared, even if they´d had the opportunity. Bet they felt "justified" and that they were showing their supporters that they´re relevant.
And they wouldn´t be recognized by most of the priests or others who were distributing communion -- they aren´t nearly as important as they think they are.
And taking communion while in the state of mortal sin (eg, supporting abortion, etc.) only compounds it.

If they are Catholic, Nancy and Joe know the rules of their faith. If they are not in a state of grace (and being pro-abortion qualifies them for not being so), they are not supposed to receive Communion.
That they chose to do so makes them even bigger sinners.

There is alot of Hypocracy in The Catholic Church, from the top down. These people who shouldn´t be receiving Communion are allowed to "Officially" and nothing is done about it. Many of the Kennedys should have been shown the door a long time ago too. they aren´t Catholics in any sense of the word........but still received Communion. The Catholic Church obviously doesn´t stand for anything, since they don´t try to inforce their own rules.

#28 - what Christian denomination would show less "hypocracy" in this area? Which denomination actually has any analogous rules to "inforce"? Or is this just a chance to slam Catholics for being less than Christian?
It comes across as no different from parents being ridiculed by someone who´s never had children, for not stopping their toddler from whining in public. (Or any person pointing at any other and snarling, You´re a sinner.)
I wish SF´s bishop could excommunicate Pelosi for obstinate defiance, just as others here do. But try to appreciate how reluctant bishops are to use that weapon/tool, when the world as a whole (both in and out of the Church) ridicules that as an abuse of power.

Didn´t mean to imply that Catholics aren´t Christians #29. Just pointing out that "The Church" doesn´t inforce it´s own rules. Commmunion is supposed to be for The Followers. If you´re openly preaching against the dictates of "The Church" you are not in communion with it and should be excluded. As you stated, Pelosi shouldn´t be receiving Communion (as do others as I pointed out)but "The Church" allows her to and so looks like it doesn´t believe in what it preaches.

A New York judge yesterday blasted federal “sequestration” cuts, calling it “stunning” that they could force him to delay the start of a terrorism trial for Osama bin Laden’s son-in-law. Manhattan federal Judge Lewis Kaplan appeared flabbergasted when a defense lawyer for Sulaiman Abu Ghaith said mandatory work furloughs would make it “very difficult to be ready” for trial by September. Kaplan began calling the situation “ironic” before noting that was “not exactly the right word.” “It’s extremely troublesome to contemplate the possibility of a case of this nature being delayed by sequestration,” Kaplan said.

Over the weekend, the Saddleback Valley Community Church announced the sad news that Pastor Rick Warren‘s youngest son, Matthew, committed suicide at the age of 27, after a long struggle with mental illness. On Monday, Megyn Kelly‘s panel took on some of the “despicable” reaction that followed — questioning why the pastor isn’t afforded basic compassion by some of his critics. Noting the “shocking” and “disgusting” vitriol directed at the pastor following the news, Kelly declined to “give a voice to the haters.” Father Jonathan Morris, a Fox News contributor, agreed, deeming the attacks “ridiculous,” “tasteless,” and simply “very sad.”

Bernard Anderson, a pathbreaking African-American economist, understands the importance of rhetoric. He was up front at the Lincoln Memorial when Martin Luther King Jr. gave his historic “I Have a Dream” speech in 1963. And he was in the audience on the Howard University campus in 1965 to hear President Johnson deliver a grim view of the state of black America and declare war on “past injustice and present prejudice.” So Anderson had high hopes as he sat at home in Pennsylvania watching President Obama deliver his second Inaugural Address this year.

The case of a same-sex Connecticut couple accused of repeatedly raping and abusing two of their nine adopted boys is headed for trial. Married couple George Harasz and Douglas Wirth of Glastonbury were supposed to be sentenced Friday in Hartford Superior Court under a plea deal, but instead withdrew from their agreement with prosecutors. The men had already pleaded no contest in January to one felony count each of risk of injury to a minor — a reduction from even more serious charges related to sexual assault....

WASHINGTON — President Obama next week will take the political risk of formally proposing cuts to Social Security and Medicare in his annual budget in an effort to demonstrate his willingness to compromise with Republicans and revive prospects for a long-term deficit-reduction deal, administration officials say. In a significant shift in fiscal strategy, Mr. Obama on Wednesday will send a budget plan to Capitol Hill that departs from the usual presidential wish list that Republicans typically declare dead on arrival.

Washington is edging closer to a budget deal, thanks to a gutsy change in strategy at the White House. Next week, President Obama will propose specific cuts to Social Security and Medicare in his annual budget, according to senior White House officials. That will put the onus on House Speaker John Boehner to show some leadership, too. He needs to push Republicans toward accepting tax increases beyond the $600 billion approved in December. It can be done. As I reported last month, Washington’s biggest myth is that a budget deal is out of reach

WASHINGTON — The North Korean army warned the United States on Wednesday it has been cleared to wage nuclear war using “smaller, lighter and diversified weapons.” In a speech earlier in the day, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel noted that North Korea has both the nuclear weapons and the delivery system “now.” It’s the latest round in an escalation of rhetoric and actions that began with a North Korean nuclear test in February. Still, military officials and experts don’t expect North Korea to launch an attack on the United States.

Two breaking news alerts came through the wire this afternoon: First, the AP sent word that Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel has called North Korea´s latest rhetoric a real, clear danger and threat to the U.S. and its allies. Within minutes, CNBC announced that the Pentagon has sent a new missile defense to Guam. The reports that followed those alerts added some meat to the storty -- "Hagel´s comments come as tensions continue to rise between North and South Korea," etc. -- but they are notably lacking in context. How serious is the threat, really? Are the North and South on the verge of war, or is this yet another bluff?

Recent research indicates that the number of people who do not consider themselves a part of an organized religion is steadily on the rise. Interestingly enough, though the number of those religiously unaffiliated is increasing, there is little to no trend in the number of those who express atheist or agnostic beliefs. People aren’t saying they don’t believe in God. They’re saying they don’t believe in religion. They are not rejecting Christ. They are rejecting the church. This begs the question, “Why are we losing our religion?”

Beginning a week of high pressure on gun control, the White House on Monday accused some Republican senators of cowardice for planning to filibuster gun legislation without allowing the full Senate to vote on President Obama’s initiatives. “If they oppose this legislation, have the courage to say so on the floor and vote no,” said White House press secretary Jay Carney. “Don’t block it. Don’t hide behind a procedural action to prevent a vote. That’s the wrong thing to do, and that’s how the president clearly feels.”
