This is USA Today. Not an especially reliable source, especially when it is written by a woman who calls herself a "fitness junkie" in print.

As for listing Alzheimer´s as a cause of death (kvetched about in the article), it is not diagnosable without an autopsy of the brain post mortem. The person doing the kvetching has a vested interest in ratcheting up the Alzheimer´s statistics - and in the government´s "doing something.

This appears to be an agenda piece about the catchall "dementia" with an emphasis on Alzheimer´s.

This study was done by a group that wants to increase funding for Alzheimer´s research. Not that that isn´t a worthy cause, but I would take the results with a grain of salt. How is dementia defined? Not all age-related memory problems are Alzheimers. And there are wide degrees of mental impairment. Having said that, I think more research should be done. I fear, however, that with Obamacare, dementia will decline because old people will be denied medical treatment and will die earlier.

A lame example is used of a person dying with the cause of death on their death certificate "Pneumonia". The "advocate" says no-no, the person died of Alzheimer´s. No-no. The person died of pneumonia. That is what took them, as it does many elderly persons and persons with compromised immune systems.

Many people are not aware that the cholesterol lowering drugs cause memory loss in many individuals. My husband was put on Liipitor and after year displayed behavior like he had a stroke or dementia. His speech and thinking patterns were changed. He could not remember from day to day. Brain scans and psychological evaluations showed nothing significant, except for two tests where he could not answer questions about word association and questions about events in a story. But an hour later without review could answer them correctly. He was told he was getting the information into the brain, but he was having difficulty retrieving the information. He was taken off the statin drug and improved somewhat, but he still suffers from short term memory. His general doctor in the beginning was trying to shuffle him off as having dementia. If you are having memory problems and are taking statin drugs, please Google, statin drugs and memory loss.

Obamacare will prevent those from living that long.

I had a family member who recently died of pneumonia as a result of Alzheimer´s. She basically lost the ability to swallow food or liquids without aspirating into her lungs.

Aspirational pneumonia is frequently the cause of death in people with Alzheimer´s. It is a horrible disease that does not just rob you of your memory.

Most people used to die of other causes before living long enough to develop Alzheimer´s. As the mortality rate for heart disease and various forms of cancer have declined, the mortality rate from Alzheimer´s has increased simply because we now live long enough to develop it.

Maybe if Washington put the same amount of money leaving the country via foreign aid into medical research, we would have the reason 1 in 3 die from dementia. Maybe if the clinical trials were longer on new meds, they wouldn´t be handed out like candy. Got a problem ? Take a pill.
