Dr. Benjamin Carson Escaped
The Ghetto With Mother´s Help

Investor´s Business Daily, by Thomas Sowell

Original Article

Posted By:SoCalGal, 3/18/2013 11:19:05 PM

A remarkable book titled "Gifted Hands" tells the personal story of Benjamin Carson, a black kid from the Detroit ghetto who went on to become a renowned neurosurgeon. At one time young Ben Carson had the lowest grades in his middle-school class, and was the butt of teasing by his white classmates. Worse yet, he himself believed that he was just not smart enough to do the work. Fortunately for him, his mother, whose own education went no further than the third grade, insisted that he was smart.

Comments:
She did more than tell him he was smart. She disciplined him and encouraged him to read and just made it happen.

By now many of us know this story, but it should be broadcast far and wide - and heeded. This would be a better project for Moochelle - ghetto literacy, encouraging these kids - than the silly superficial stuff she´s into now.

My father often visited a clinic in a rough neighborhood in Chicago, owned by two doctors and their mother. As a single mother, with little education, she pushed and pulled her boys until they both became doctors. She ran the clinic with them.

That was the 70s, good parents don´t need more than will to help their children overcome.

The education industry has that whole "self esteem" part down (tell them they´re smart). Now, somebody should tell them to go to Chapter 2 (make them do the work). Actually, I´m not too sure the (alleged) educators CAN themselves read Chapter 2. [No sarcasm was bent, twisted, maimed or intended in this statement. :-) )

One outstanding black scholar discussing another. I have admired Dr. Sowell for many years, and I have great expectations for Dr. Carson. If only the liberals would heed their words.

I believe Dr. Carson said in his CPAC speech that his mother told him he was too smart to bring home such poor grades -- but he kept bringing them home anyway.

Dr. Sowell is dead-on again. What the Left prescribes -- and inflicts -- does far more harm than good.

But, if we only "invested" more money, lots more money, their "great" ideas would swing open Eden´s gate.

Why would they lie?

Carson´t stock could rise sharply over the next couple of years because people are losing faith in the political class every day. Just when you think you have a candidate picked out,you get ambushed by this reach out crap which makes the parties indistinguishable.

i suppose the same thing could happen to Carson if he took one rotten egg position. That´s why I´m taking a wait and see position before jumping on his bandwagon. He does realize political correctness is dividing the country and killing it´s soul,so that´s at least a step in the right direction.

It would be refreshing to have an outsider president and the CEO of Whole Foods would make another great choice,he understands how this economy works as much as anybody. We need a real brilliant mind running this country, not a media constructed one like Bamboozle.

I like Dr Carson´s speaking abilities and applaud his success. His story is inspirational, however it does not make him presidential material, just yet. I hope he reviews the Constitution and maybe has a few discussions with Rick Perry and/or David Barton, before he comments on gun regulation or government mandated/controlled health savings accounts. His comments suggest he still believes government is still the answer for those things.
He needs to understand the philosophy of limited government with only the specific powers enumerated in the Constitution.

Time tested Tom Sowell, understands the classic rules of economics and philosophy.
Pray that Ben Carson stays close to the advising values of Tom Sowell. Once Ben is pushed out into the eye of the public political storm, he can stay on the track of reason and benefit big time from Tom.
Ben Carson could have no better friend than
Tom Sowell. We can all be thankful for that.

It doesn´t matter that Carson´s mother had little education and few opportunities; she had wisdom. God bless her for that and what she accomplished along the way.

Hope this unique, wise and talented Dr. Carson will see his way toward running for public office. We so desperately need a man of his caliber. I hope he has the strength to deal with the left´s viciousness toward anyone who disagrees with them. Once you´ve seen him speak, you´ll never forget him or what he says. Have a feeling he could ´weather the storm´.

It´s going to be hard for the chattering class to eviscerate Ben Carson. He went to Yale (gasp), holds professorships in four different medical specialties, has been awarded 54 honorary doctorates, and has performed surgeries unheard of before he did them. What are they going to say--he´s stupid and uneducated?

#8, very good point. His mother not only made the boys do their homework, but compelled them to read outside that. (I think I heard it was 2 books a week, but I could be wrong.) If you can get a kid to read for pleasure, you´ve won a lot of the battle.

There is a woman like Carson´s Mother and then there is woman like Our Dear Reader´s. One passionately guides her son with wholesome goodness, the other drags her child into a Third World Country, and when he suddenly isn´t "little" anymore, abandons him.

In America, character still counts. We must not fall into the statist dems´ modus opperandi trap of dividing individuals into communal groupings in order to target them and discriminate against them, and painting them with a bogus ´broadbrush,´ on such a ridiculously unfounded basis.

The is America, where CHARACTER COUNTS and EACH individual is equally valued and respected by fellow citizens AND the Constitutional Rule of LAW!!! This is NOT a communal socialist, radical statist country, ...yet.

American voters should consider the merits of EACH Presidential potential, beginning with the content of his character. Dr. Carson merits consideration on that point and many others, including knowledge of healthcare in the USA.

Am currently reading the book and watched the movie last week, Gifted Hands. Cuba Gooding, Jr. plays a great role!

As for Dr. Carson, he´s got his priorities straight. "If God be with me, who can be against me," was one of his recent comments.

As for those who fear "another black man," just observe the content of their characters, not the color of their skin.

Thomas Sowell and Ben Carson are giants in their respective fields. America is so much richer for them.

But it doesn´t matter, because he´s not really black. Not like Snoop Dog and all the other rappers who are true and real. He´s a Tom who sold out to white education, leaving his people behind to embrace the white world. Dr. Carson is just another suburban wanna be, suitable for ostracizing but not as a role model. He´s a man of conviction expressing the values of hard work, honesty, integrity, and honor as the way to escape perpetual poverty as provided by the Great Society Dimocrits who created the New Plantation of dependency.

Please excuse the blank posting. Dr. Carson will never be in American politics if the left has anything to say about it. The MSM is poised to pounce if he takes a step in that direction. Sarah Palin was picked as McCain´s running mate and 2 seconds later, 11 lawyers get on a plane for Alaska to dig up dirt on her. Welcome to New American Politics. How can the will of the American people, ´break through the glass ceiling,´ which has apparently been crafted and set firmly in place inside Boomtown´s statist pol beltway?! (Lefty/libs themselves once railed against any, ´´glass ceilings,´´ but look at them in Boomtown now!?!!)

Every beltway policy now is done in secret statist pol cliques behind closed doors, not debated in the open on the House & Senate floors of the Congress as is required in the U.S. Constitution. Nothing about this current gang of pols is, ´´transparent,´ as they had all promised. Pelosi even had the nerve to boast excitedly, ´We will find out what is in the bill after we pass it,´ regarding 0bamacare. Now we hear another tiny number of stealth statist pols has conjured up an Illegal alien amnesty/citizenship deal in secret, etc., etc., etc., ...and so it goes in 2013 in this new statist-0bama-pelosi-reid, ´NeverNeverland,´ of Boomtown´s public policy COMPLETE make-over for America the Beautiful?!

Who can ever trust a statist pol? ...As political parties seem to be merging into one statist agenda, the will of the American people is increasing becoming marginalized and made irrelevant as citizens´ choices & policy preferences are snatched away through deceit. mmm mmm mmm

The teen, known only as "Witness 8," is considered to be the prosecution´s key witness, but Zimmerman´s attorneys said she lied during a deposition by the Martin family´s attorney, Benjamin Crump. Recent research indicates that the number of people who do not consider themselves a part of an organized religion is steadily on the rise. Interestingly enough, though the number of those religiously unaffiliated is increasing, there is little to no trend in the number of those who express atheist or agnostic beliefs. People aren’t saying they don’t believe in God. They’re saying they don’t believe in religion. They are not rejecting Christ. They are rejecting the church. On Friday, Sean Hannity brought Pat Smith, mother of the late Sean Smith, on his radio program. The 34-year-old information management officer was one of four Americans murdered in the Benghazi embassy attack on September 11, 2012. In the chilling interview, a distraught Ms. Smith, in tears, pleaded for answers and spoke of the efforts to silence her. Ms. Smith first relayed how her son, prior to the attack, requested additional security in advance and warned the State Department: He did tell them, ahead of time, he typed it into his little typewriter over there,

Put out an all-points bulletin: Millions of Americans have gone missing from the workforce. Every month that those would-be workers are gone raises the odds that they might never come back, dimming the prospects for future economic growth. The vanishing trend is more than a decade old, but it accelerated during the Great Recession. Throughout 2012, economists held out hope that it had stopped. But then came Friday’s jobs report, and hopes were dashed. The Labor Department reported that the U.S. labor force — everyone who has a job or is looking for one — shrank

Susan Patton, the Princeton alumna who became famous for her letter urging Ivy League women to use their college years to find a mate, has been denounced as a traitor to feminism, to coeducation, to the university ideal. But really she’s something much more interesting: a traitor to her class. Her betrayal consists of being gauche enough to acknowledge publicly a truth that everyone who’s come up through Ivy League culture knows intuitively —

Gluten-free diets are all the rage, but they can be dangerous if not done right. What is gluten? It´s the spongy complex of proteins, found naturally in wheat, rye, and barley, that gives elasticity to dough and allows it to rise. When flour is moistened and either kneaded or mixed into dough, gluten molecules form an elastic, microscopic latticework that traps the carbon dioxide produced when yeast ferments, causing dough to inflate like a hot air balloon. Baking hardens the gluten, which helps the finished product keep its shape. Wheat — and gluten — is ubiquitous in the American diet.
