SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic — Police in the Dominican Republic say they have determined that three women who said they had sex with U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez for money were in fact paid to make false claims by an attorney in the Caribbean country. Police spokesman Maximo Baez says officers traced the payments to attorney Melanio Figueroa. Baez says two women received about $425 each and the other was paid about $300 to falsely state on camera that they had sex with Menendez (D-N.J.).

I wonder just how many thousands of dollars these women were paid to recant their original story??? The level of corruption in that part of the world is legendary, and Menendez´s friends and business associates certainly have ample resources to influence even the most staunch Columbo wannabe in the Dominican Police Force to convince these women to choose the silver instead of the lead!!!

I don´t buy this for a second. The DR is the closest place to the US border where prostitution is legal (except Nevada, of course). Why would Menendez make so many trips down there with his doctor buddy if it wasn´t to get some strange. Or maybe he went "for the waters" (Casablanca).

KIEV, Ukraine — With hundreds of riot police officers advancing from all sides after a day of deadly mayhem here in the Ukrainian capital, antigovernment protesters mounted a final desperate and seemingly doomed act of defiance late on Tuesday evening, establishing a protective ring of fire around what remained of their all-but-conquered encampment on Independence Square. Feeding the blazing defenses with blankets, tires, wood, sheets of plastic foam and anything else that might burn, the protesters hoped to prolong, for a while longer at least, a tumultuous protest movement against President Viktor F. Forrmer Clinton administration operative Paul Begala doesn’t think so. He writes: “Politics [is] about the future, not the past; about voters’ lives, not politicians’. Thus the personal attacks on Clintons will fail.” Begala is probably right, but his analysis seems to apply only to Democratic politicians. The Washington Post thought that a few instances of alleged high-school bullying by Mitt Romney were relevant to his presidential bid, and Team Obama had a field day with Romney’s old business ventures. Similarly, the Post has written this year about Chris Christie’s first political campaign (for the County Commission in 1994) and about his

The death last Sunday of Oscar-winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman at age 46 focused media attention on the nationwide surge in heroin use and overdoses. But the very real heroin epidemic is framed by an even more dramatic increase since the beginning of the century in overdoses from pharmaceutical drugs known as opioids. These are, in effect, tandem epidemics — an addiction crisis driven by the powerful effects on the human brain of drugs derived from morphine.Further tests are pending to determine the precise cause of actor Philip Seymour Hoffman’s death.

There´s a debate going on about Hillary Clinton´s past. If she runs for president in 2016, should Republicans reach back to the scandals of her years as First Lady? Or should they focus on more recent times, especially her tenure as Secretary of State, to build a case against her? The GOP doesn´t have to choose. Of course Clinton´s recent experiences are relevant to a presidential run. But so are her actions in the 90s, the 80s and even the 70s. It´s not ancient history; it reveals something about who Clinton was and still is. And re-examining her past is entirely consistent with practices in recent campaigns. In the 2012 presidential race,

The weirdest thing about John Kerry´s weekend speech on climate-change—other than the fact that this is the same guy who in 1997 voted to forbid the U.S. from signing the Kyoto Protocol—is that it begins by quoting something Maurice Strong said at the U.N.´s 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro: "Every bit of evidence I´ve seen persuades me that we are on a course leading to tragedy." Maurice who? Mr. Strong, a former oil executive from Canada (he was Pierre Trudeau´s pick to run state-owned Petro-Canada in the mid-1970s), was for many years the U.N.´s ultimate mandarin.
