Sen. Charles Schumer is calling on the cruise ship industry to adopt a "bill of rights" to guarantee passengers certain protections while aboard their ships. The New York Democrat says Sunday he´ll be asking industry leaders to voluntarily adopt the guidelines which include guarantees that ships have sanitary conditions, back-up power, medical staff and other standard procedures. Schumer´s plan would also include the right to a full refund if a trip is abruptly canceled due to mechanical problems. In the past two months at least three ships carrying US passengers on cruises have experienced problems, including power failures.
Most cruise ships are not registered in the US, mainly for the over regulating done by congress. I doubt that Chunky will have any luck even if he passes the bill. The most the US can do is prevent these ships coming to our ports and I seriously doubt they will do that.
#2 Beat me to the obvious. Too bad our elected officials don´t think or do their research before they speak. Up chuckie should have known that cruise ships are registered outside the USA in order to avoid the likes of himself and his ilk.
I am surprised, watching interviews, how many people say they would cruise again and on the same carrier. The market should control this. Lots of cruise ships around the world (some illegally dumping their waste and sewage - that is where governments should step in) and lots of people willing to pay to play. People should read their tickets, get lawyers if they feel the need, but keep the damned government out of it. They have enough to do. Or rather, they have enough they should be doing. They can step in if terrorists climb on board.
Oh look! A squirrel, a snake, No, it´s Chuck E Cheese. What good would THAT do Chuckie? You´ve destroyed the US Bill of Rights. This would be no different. You would do your best to destroy it too. Besides, most of WTP are too broke to afford a cruise
I´ve cruised just three times - Caribbean for two weeks, Mexico for four days, Hawaii for a week. I should have stopped after the first one, but friends wanted to go. Didn´t have any problems. Did see problems and were told by the crew they were problems from other cruise ships. Plus at that time there was a big push worldwide to stop cruise ships from this disgusting practice.
Once you sign your cruise ticket there is no need for a lawyer anymore no matter what happens or how bad or unhealthy the ship might become. It is a contract in which you have given up all legal rights, written by and for the cruise line´s benefit. You have no rights left.
Oh good, now congress thinks it needs to get in the vacation cruise business. Can you Democrats just get your noses out of our business! Hey Schumer! Get that barbershop in line in the Senate first. Then we may let you try a lemonade stand!
You´ve already shown us what you can do with Soc. Security and the national debt. Shut up and stay in your little pig sty of a world. We don´t need you!
considering that all cruise lines are foreign flagged, this is a nothing burger and if Schumer thinks he can get it passed, let him try. It might keep him from meddling in issues that really affect the rest of us.
The US gov´t has absolutely positively no power or control over cruise lines´ vessels except for inspection of operational systems by the Coast Guard. Read the fine print on the ticket - it´s a contract. And then if you´re happy with the details, cruise away. The market will deal with Carnival. I predict that if they don´t make some major changes they won´t be in business in a year. Then again, my crystal ball has a short in it. Hasn´t been working right for a spell.
I still wouldn´t cruise - even if it were free. But that´s just my own personal quirk...
Schumer as well as all liberals stick their noses in a private business matters. let the market and common business sense dictate the cruise ship business. If you run a crappy cruise ship business, the paying customers will put you out of business in no time. Not the governments business.
It´s a machine, you idiot, and a very complex machine. People who take boat rides are putting themselves at the mercy of these mechanical behemoths. They should expect them to break down and to break down a lot. It´s a wonder that any of them get back to port on schedule. Navy ships and merchant ships are a whole different category. Not near the complexity.
So when is he going to demand a "Fed-run airport Bill of Rights". TSA "workers" steal our stuff, feel up our daughters with impunity-because their union contract makes them not subject to dismissal. It´s OK though. They give money to Schumer´s party.
The cruise ship companies are there to make money, and thus do everything that they can to keep their ships from breaking down and disrupting their cruise schedule which causes when to loose money.
But because cruise ships are complex electronic and mechanical operations they sometimes do break down. When that has happened in the past, it appears that the cruise ship companies have refunded the price of the cruise to the passengers and have offered discounts on a future cruise.
So why does the government have to create a special bill of rights that would interfere with a lawful commercial contract between passengers and cruise ship companies?
The White House has admitted that it was wrong to promise that people would be able to their health care plans under Obamacare. "With respect to the pledge I made that if you like your plan you can keep it, I think -- you know, and I’ve said in interviews -- that there is no doubt that the way I put that forward unequivocally ended up not being accurate. It was not because of my intention not to deliver on that commitment and that promise. We put a grandfather clause into the law but it was insufficient," President Obama said
Republicans for the Obamacare mess that made him concede he would have to "rebrand" and "remarket" Obamacare, ignoring that the law was passed with legislative gimmicks and no Republican support in the House. At the Wall Street Journal CEO Summit, Obama said he should have better anticipated that the GOP´s opposition to the individual mandate and "would create a rockier rollout than if Democrats and Republicans were both invested in success." “One of the problems that we’ve had is that one side of Capitol Hill is invested in failure and that makes the kind of iterative process of fixing glitches as they
A plan to squeeze most residents of the San Francisco Bay Area into multifamily housing offers a test case of whether land-use bureaucracies nationwide, encouraged by the Obama administration, should be allowed to transform American lifestyles under the pretext of combating climate change. Currently, 56 percent of households in the nine-county Bay Area live in single-family homes. That number would drop to 48 percent by 2030, under a high-density development blueprint called Plan Bay Area, recently enacted by the Association of Bay Area Governments and the region’s Metropolitan Transportation Commission. Plan Bay Area has already drawn several legal challenges, and the debate
Fiscal Fraud: The government issued an astounding $1 trillion in new debt during the first six weeks of the fiscal year. How could such a thing happen with nary a peep? Just like ObamaCare, it´s more government deceit. Maybe you didn´t notice, because it barely warranted reporting by anyone other than the plucky CNSNews.com. But the government has quietly raised $1 trillion in new debt since the end of September. As we´ve noted, it was all part of the charade of last summer´s debt-ceiling negotiations between the Obama administration and Republicans in the House. A handful of reporters noted at the time how
President Obama says he can "fix" the millions of canceled health insurance plans with an administrative change. He´s claiming more executive power — power for himself — than the Constitution allows, and is playing fast and loose with the truth. The culprit behind the cancellations is not an administrative regulation, as he claims. It´s Section 2702 of the Affordable Care Act. It says all plans sold in the individual market or small-group market on Jan. 1, 2014, or later must include the Essential Benefits Package. This means 10 categories of health coverage the Washington "experts" deem essential, such as maternity care even
Bias: The Washington media elite agree the president´s press conference last week over ObamaCare marked a low point in his presidency. Look in the mirror. While Obama admitted "we fumbled the rollout of this health care law," a sympathetic White House press corps gave him ample chance to recover the ball. In fact, they gave him back control of the game, despite his many prevarications. Their questions were so open-ended that Obama had enough wiggle room to filibuster and avoid taking virtually any follow-up questions. In effect, reporters let him run out the clock in one of the most important presidential press events
RUSH: I´m ready for apologies from the Drive-By Media. I´m open, and I will graciously accept apologies from everybody who mocked me and ridiculed me and made fun of me for questioning the unemployment rate last fall before the elections. Now, I´m not gonna hold my breath because I know the apologies aren´t gonna be forthcoming, but I want to go on record. I probably shoulda told Cookie to go back and search the archives. Just find two or three examples of me in the months prior to the election predicting to you that the unemployment rate would magically end up
RUSH: This reminds me of a sound bite I´ve got here. I don´t even remember which one it is, but I´ll find it. Hang on, folks. Let me find this. Oh, it´s about Christie. Do I have it here? Chris Christie, Chris Christie, Chris Christie. (muttering) Yeah, grab 19 and 20. (interruption) Well, that talk about moderate/conservative Republicans reminded me that Governor Christie basically last night in Washington, at the Wall Street Journal CEO Council Forum, said that he feels sorry for Obama, that we just elected him and now we´re shoving him out the door, but he is a failure
Washington DC talk show host Chris Plante reported today that Barack Obama omitted the words "under God" from the Gettysburg Address when reciting the great speech for a Ken Burns documentary. Burns had filmed all living presidents as well as various Hollywood personalities and luminaries to pay homage to the speech which was delivered by Abraham Lincoln 150 years ago, today. Plante broke the story on Washington DC talk radio station WMAL on his mid-morning program, "The Chris Plante Show." WMAL reports: Curiously enough, in his version of the speech, President Barack Obama´s delivery contained an omission - in a line that every other
My old hometown newspaper, the Lexington Herald-Leader, is running an outstanding series of articles on the deep and persistent poverty of Appalachia. It’s worth studying long-term poverty in Appalachia not just because we care for our fellow citizens but also because the plight of the Appalachian poor in fact galvanized LBJ to launch the War on Poverty. On Sunday, Herald-Leader writer Jon Cheves took a long, unblinking look at the culture of dependency that dominates Eastern Kentucky’s poor counties. It’s an outstanding piece. To get a sense of the extent of government dependency in some Kentucky counties, in Martin County, Ky. (a
Vice President Joseph R. Biden vowed Monday that Obamacare eventually will be a success, but added a crucial qualifier: “God willing.” Mr. Biden, widely rumored to be mulling his own White House run in 2016, has good reason to call for divine intervention in turning around what has been a disastrous rollout of the Affordable Care Act. His political ambitions will be tied directly to the law he once called a “big [expletive] deal”: Its success would give the vice president a key selling point; its failure would weigh down and possibly sink his campaign. Mr. Biden isn’t the only Democratic presidential
Washington - President Barack Obama delved into his grass-roots organizing past Monday, appealing to his most faithful supporters to help him out of the political maelstrom over the botched rollout of his health care law. "It is a long race, and we aren´t near the tape yet, we have just got to keep on running," a tired-sounding Obama said, on a scratchy phone and Internet call with his Organizing for Action political group. "I hope you still have as much fight in you as I do. We aren´t going to stop until we get this done," Obama said. "When you are on
In the home stretch of the 2012 presidential campaign, from August to September, the unemployment rate fell sharply — raising eyebrows from Wall Street to Washington. The decline — from 8.1 percent in August to 7.8 percent in September — might not have been all it seemed. The numbers, according to a reliable source, were manipulated. And the Census Bureau, which does the unemployment survey, knew it. Just two years before the presidential election, the Census Bureau had caught an employee fabricating data that went into the unemployment report, which is one of the most closely watched measures of the economy. And a knowledgeable
The Times Of Israel is reporting that a team of negotiators led by White House adviser Valerie Jarrett has been conducting secret talks with Iran about it´s nuclear weapons program for the past year. The report states the deal submitted in Geneva earlier this month was a direct result of these secret year-long negotiations between teams headed by Jarrett and Iran´s Ali Akbar Salehi. That deal was ultimately rejected when France and Israel raised strong objections, and talks are expected to resume this Wednesday. The White House was very quick to issue a categorical denial of the report. According to
Barack Obama is the coolest president we’ve had since John F. Kennedy, at least according to conventional standards for such things. Obama has always been a brand as much as a politician, one that has been perceived as sleek, smart, and up to date. Then along came HealthCare.gov. Its failure to launch is a signal event in the long political battle over Obamacare and perhaps an inflection point in the president’s image. It’s hard to maintain a sense of truly being on the cutting edge of change when you can’t build a website. Obama’s cool was, in part, an artifact of world-class
Most women will tell you that other than the N-word, the C-word is the most vile in the English language never to be used. Cher apparently doesn´t hold such a belief, for she disturbingly took to Twitter Friday to call former Alaska governor Sarah Palin a "Dumb C Word": Cher ? @cher Follow Go to dictionary,& look up The “C"Word,....next 2 the definition...you’ll see a Pic of Sarah PALIN ! NO...WAIT ...SHES UNDER DUMB C WORD?? 12:11 PM - 15 Nov 2013 716 Retweets 834 favorites ReplyRetweetFavorite Three minutes later she put an exclamation point on it:
Carbohydrates are rotting our brains and contributing to devastating diseases such as Alzheimer’s, an American neurologist has warned. David Perlmutter, from Florida, believes that even ‘good’ carbs, such as grains, are severely affecting our brains. And the staples of our modern diet aren’t only increasing the risk of dementia, but contributing to depression, epilepsy and headaches, he believes. [Snip] The solution? Going back to the days when our diet was mainly fat--with this making up 75 percent of our diet, and carbs just 5 percent. Protein intake should stay the same as it is, at about 20 percent.
A downbeat President Barack Obama repeatedly asked his worried supporters Monday night to help resurrect his spirits, following weeks of political disasters and personal humiliations caused by the cascading collapse of Obamacare. The distracted president railed against opponents and at one point appeared to forget the number of people in the Obamacare system during the rambling quarter-hour address. “My main message is I’m going to need your help, your energy, your faith, your ability to reach out to neighbors, kids and friends [and] co-workers,” he told listeners to the Internet broadcast arranged by his grass-roots group, Organizing for Action. But his worried
WASHINGTON — Michelle Obama says she won’t wear shorts on Air Force One again because the one time she did, it created “a huge stink.”(snip)Mrs. Obama was asked about her biggest fashion regret. She said she’s always happy with her outfits but that, quote, “sometimes I forget I’m the first lady and I’m running around in shorts.” She recalled her family’s first White House vacation, to the Grand Canyon in August 2009. Mrs. Obama said her wearing shorts getting off the plane “created a huge stink because people were like, ‘she’s wearing shorts getting off of Air Force One.’” She said her thought
On Tuesday, President Barack Obama conceded that he will have to "remarket" and "rebrand" Obamacare as public confidence in him and the healthcare law he championed has plummeted. Speaking at the Wall Street Journal CEO Summit, Obama addressed the failures of the Obamacare rollout and said while he was confident that the healthcare model his administration built, which he claimed worked off of the "existing private insurance system," would succeed, the law would have to be rebranded. “We are going to have to obviously remarket and rebrand,” Obama said. “And that will be challenging in this political environment.” When he
New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) says everyone should stop talking so much about the 2016 presidential race, because doing so hurts President Obama, who´s only a year into his second term. "In this sense, I feel badly for President Obama. He just won a year ago, and everybody´s like, ´So, who´s next?´" Christie said Monday night at the Wall Street Journal CEO Council. "There is work to be done in this country. And as we shove him out the door, we minimize his ability to be an effective executive. And we shouldn´t do that." Even as he urged people to focus
A day after his daughters´ spat over their disagreements on gay marriage spilled out messily into the public, former Vice President Dick Cheney and his wife, Lynne, released a statement urging that there not be a "distortion" of Liz Cheney´s views on the subject. The statement came a day after Mary Cheney and her wife, Heather Poe, blasted Liz Cheney, a Republican U.S. Senate candidate in Wyoming for her opposition to gay marriage. Here is Dick and Lynne Cheney´s full statement on the issue: "This is an issue we have dealt with privately for many years, and we are pained to see it
President Obama irked some conservatives with his recitation of the Gettysburg Address, which he read aloud as part of a project celebrating the 150th anniversary of famous Lincoln speech. For the project, spearheaded by documentarian Ken Burns, a number of politicians and other high-profile people recorded themselves reading the Gettysburg Address. However, Mr. Obama´s recording seems to be the only one that leaves the phrase "under God" out of a certain line. Some conservatives took offense to the president´s reading. "Lincoln added ´Under God´ as he was looking out over battlefield. why would obama remove?" Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said on Twitter. Gettysburg
Secretary of State John Kerry told a climate change conference in Poland Monday that global warming is the biggest challenge to the world. “Fulfilling our responsibility to the future inhabitants of our planet is an ambitious goal, yes, but there isn´t a more important one out there right now,” he said in a video shown at the conference. Kerry also urged immediate action by world leaders to curb emissions. Climate change, he said, “is happening now.”
