Cyprus to Sieze savings

Cyprus´s parliament has postponed until Monday an emergency session to vote on a levy on bank deposits after signs that lawmakers might block the surprise move agreed in Brussels to help fund a bailout and avert national bankruptcy. In a radical departure from previous aid packages, euro zone finance ministers want Cyprus savers to forfeit up to 9.9 percent of their deposits in return for a 10 billion euro ($13 billion) bailout for the island,

Oh I know. I was reading that Obama plans to go after our Gold and Silver savings as well.

Obama will be enviously watching footage of this like a sci-fi geek watches Star Trek reruns.

When then First Lady Hillary suggested government seizure of IRAs, 401ks and other privately held retirement plans, the howling from all could be heard in space. Now, after 15 years of propaganda about the greedy earners not sharing, this could be done here and the opposition would not be enough to stop it.

I guess it´s time to cash in all my IRAs, buy gold and stash it in the Caymans.

It already has OP only more stealthily. When interest rates are artificially suppressed to zero, the savers have been robbed of about 4%/annum since 2008. And that´s on top of the attempts to increase inflation and depreciate the worthless paper we call money.

Reply 6 - Posted by: lylacat, 3/17/2013 6:58:09 PM     (No. 9230002)

I agree with #4; it is already happening here. The incessant printing of money at the tune of $85 Billion each month is "taking" from savers, as the money they saved is worth 4% less each year, and this has been going on three years now. Banks are allowed to get free money, and they pay no interest. Nonsavers are allowed to borrow excessively to have the things they want, run up their charge cards, and then go bankrupt to clear their debt. Millions of nonsavers have bought houses they could not afford, and long ago quit paying the mortgage, then getting to live free in these houses for four years. 0bama just changed how these losers´ credit scores are figured, as he feels they should not be punished with poor credit scores which limit their future spending. And banks who are foreclosing on these losers are being pressured, because 0bama feels these people are being targeted unfairly. It is time we passed laws to make people take responsibility for their debts and not reward them for overspending beyond their means. But then, we all know for whom these people vote.

They´re working now to revise the deal. They still want to steal your money, but they´ll steal more from the rich. Accounts over 500,000. 3% for accounts under 100,000. Obama must be advising.

Another idea floated today by the head economist for one of Germany´s larger banks was a wealth tax to be imposed on Italy. 15%, but it´s only one time and it will never happen again, honest. Seems Italy has too many assets compared to say Austria and it´s not fair.

Europe´s gonna blow up, blow up real good.

Don´t be surprised if this causes widespread problems for the EU. The euro will be devalued as foreign investors get anything and everything they have out of EU member states. I wouldn´t be surprised if there are runs on the banks in Spain, Greece and other troubled countries. If Brussels will rob Cyprus, who will be next?

The Cypriot Cabinet has declared Tuesday a Bank Holiday according to the Greek Press - they go into Wednesday. The Bank of Greece has sent 4 or 5 Billion in Euros to Cyprus to kill the Banks afloat.

Very serious opposition.

Monday is but a few hours away in Cyprus. The Parliament faces a decision. I see no reason why they should obey the EU about this.

I still think they are playing with dynamite.. And the Asian market are falling. Admittedly not proof of much yet.

North Korea’s young leader Kim Jong-un is waiting for United States President Barack Obama to make a phone call to Pyongyang to discuss easing tensions on the Korean peninsula, according to Russia’s news agency Itar-Tass. The report cited United Kingdom diplomats, saying Pyongyang was demanding the U.S. president personally call Kim Jong-un as one of the conditions to relieve the current conflict at hand. Itar-Tass also quoted the U.K.’s Sky News as saying North Korea currently has eight nuclear warheads.

Recent research indicates that the number of people who do not consider themselves a part of an organized religion is steadily on the rise. Interestingly enough, though the number of those religiously unaffiliated is increasing, there is little to no trend in the number of those who express atheist or agnostic beliefs. People aren’t saying they don’t believe in God. They’re saying they don’t believe in religion. They are not rejecting Christ. They are rejecting the church. This begs the question, “Why are we losing our religion?”

HARTFORD, Conn. -- With time running out on the chance to pass gun control legislation, President Barack Obama on Monday warned Congress not to use delaying tactics against tighter regulations and told families of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting victims that he´s "determined as ever" to honor their children with tougher laws. Obama´s gun control proposals have run into resistance on Capitol Hill, leaving their fate in doubt. Efforts by Senate Democrats to reach compromise with Republicans over expanding required federal background checks have yet to yield an agreement, and conservatives were promising to try

Los Angeles — Some people have had it with TV. They´ve had enough of the 100-plus channel universe. They don´t like timing their lives around network show schedules. They´re tired of $100-plus monthly bills. A growing number of them have stopped paying for cable and satellite TV service, and don´t even use an antenna to get free signals over the air. Beginning a week of high pressure on gun control, the White House on Monday accused some Republican senators of cowardice for planning to filibuster gun legislation without allowing the full Senate to vote on President Obama’s initiatives. “If they oppose this legislation, have the courage to say so on the floor and vote no,” said White House press secretary Jay Carney. “Don’t block it. Don’t hide behind a procedural action to prevent a vote. That’s the wrong thing to do, and that’s how the president clearly feels.”

There was growing buzz over the weekend that a bipartisan agreement on gun control — a deal that would expand background checks — could hit the floor as early as this week. However, any deal could be derailed by the looming threat of a Republican filibuster involving Texas Sen. Ted Cruz. With Cruz standing proudly in the way of any gun legislation, Democrats are trying to make him pay a political price — and even a couple of high-profile Republicans are questioning his tactics.
