Real Irish aren´t wearin´ the green on St. Patrick´s Day

| Among the thousands of people who will celebrate the Irish and Ireland this weekend, you´ll find a small group whose accents give them away as natives of the Emerald Isle. They might stand out as the only people not draped in bright green from head to toe. Although members of the most recent wave of immigrant Irish are happy and proud to find Western New Yorkers exuberantly celebrating their culture and heritage, they also are a bit perplexed by some of our traditions.

Comments: My Irish friends here refer to this week as their "high holy days." Happy St. Patrick´s Day to all. Ramona (the Pest)

I´m surprised they never eat corned beef with cabbage. I just assumed it was part of the Irish tradition.

Let´s say that corned beef and cabbage is part of the Irish-American tradition. Besides it gives the corn beef producers and cabbage farmers a chance to make a buck.

#2, wear both. #3 I love corned beef and cabbage, I fix it at least every 3 months even though I am not Irish.

I was at an Irish bar in DC with Willard Scott, our local weatherguy who went national.
He wore a green bagel hanging from a gold chain around his neck. Got lots of laughs with it.
My friend born in Ireland showed me lots of goodies, including Irish soda bread. Plus of course corned beef, etc. And our Irish coffees were made with real cream and Jameson´s whiskey, of course. (I no longer imbibe.)
But never make the Johnny Carson joke... "Erin Go Bra-less" Even Johnny got busted (no pun) for that one!
Happy St. Paddy´s to ya!

Some years ago I was dining at a restaurant in Kenmare Ireland. Business was slow and the owner joined us at our table for a drink and conversation. He was Irish and had lived in New York for 20 years before returning to Ireland and opening his own business. He informed us that the traditional dish was cabbage and Irish bacon (cured pork shoulder) which was unavailable in America. The immigrants substituted corned beef for the bacon and that is how cormed beef and cabbage came to be an Irish American tradition. According to my informant, the Irish acquired the corned beef from Jewish butchers.

Too many drunken fools will wreck their cars tonight or early tomorrow morning, pretending to be Irish to justify drinking like pigs. I only hope that when they wreck their cars, they don´t hit other people who have more common sense. ( a oouple of years ago, near Erie, Pa, two young men, drunk, on this day killed two young mothers who were heading into town to rent a video. All four died. Pretty disgusting. None was Irish, by the way.

on Fox this afternoon I saw a shot of the St Patrick´s Day parade in Dublin and everyone was wearing green. Don´t think they were catering to the Americans!
My family is Italian and they never had pizza in the old country. Immigrants did what they could and ate/cooked what they found available in the US, improvising with local ingredients. Bottom line, these are all now OUR traditions...

Hat tip to #11, who knows her Irish history.
My nephew tends bar as a 2nd job in Manhattan. About 5 years ago he´d begun asking for this particular weekend off, for cause. When I asked him why give up what certainly must be a big tip-making weekend, he told me in plain terms, "I got tired of the rookie drinkers."

Within moments of the governor signing a bill Tuesday that drastically reduces her authority, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Cindy Hill and two others filed a lawsuit to stop the action. Gov. Matt Mead signed Senate File 104, a bill that strips most of the duties of the state superintendent of public instruction. (snip). Also on Tuesday, Hill and Kerry and Clara Powers of Wheatland filed a lawsuit in Laramie County District Court that challenges the constitutionality of the bill.

It was early November when Martha Keochareon called the nursing school at Holyoke Community College, her alma mater. She had a proposal, which she laid out in a voice mail message. “I have cancer,” she said after introducing herself, “and I’m wondering if you’ll need somebody to do a case study on, a hospice patient.” (snip) “Maybe you’ll have some ambitious student that wants to do a project,” Ms. Keochareon (pronounced CATCH-uron) said after leaving her phone number. “Thank you. Less than 1 percent of twins share an amniotic sac in their mother’s womb. The situation is rare and risky and some 20 percent of what are called monoamniotic twins die, often because the umbilical cord becomes entangled, cutting off the blood and food supply. But not Kate and Annie Carlson who were born at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital on November 7 at only 30 weeks old. These miracle twins defied the odds even though their cords were tied in a dangerous knot. A delivery team led by Dr. Susan Crowe performed a successful cesarean section

San Antonio, Texas - The top U.S. military appellate court on Monday ruled that the judge presiding over the case of an Army major charged with a 2009 massacre at Fort Hood, Texas is not impartial and ordered him removed. The court also set aside the order by the judge, Colonel Gregory Gross, that accused gunman Major Nidal Hasan be forcibly shaved. The action by the United States Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces further delays the trial of Hasan, 42, who is charged with 13 counts of premeditated murder after he allegedly opened fire on soldiers and support personnel in a room

Just past the gift shop and through doors that swing open like a saloon entrance, there is a work- room strewn with tools. A small crew of men in their 70s and 80s gathers there to joke, build and paint the things that are slowly bringing Allan Herschell’s old carousel factory back to life as a museum. “This was brand-new when I started,” said Mel Brundage, 76, looking down at his apron, gray with paint splatters. “I look like Leonardo da Vinci.” The splatters are from his 14 years as a volunteer . . .

Sen. John McCain says he doesn´t understand the threats from some of his Republican colleagues to filibuster a bill on background checks to buy guns. "I don´t understand it," the Arizona Republican said on Sunday of the threat coming from Sen. Rand Paul,Sen. Ted Cruz, Sen. Mike Lee and nine other Republicans. "The purpose of the United States Senate is to debate and to vote and to let the people know where we stand.” "What are we afraid of? ... If this issue is as important as we all think it is, why not take ... it up and debate?"

North Korea’s young leader Kim Jong-un is waiting for United States President Barack Obama to make a phone call to Pyongyang to discuss easing tensions on the Korean peninsula, according to Russia’s news agency Itar-Tass. The report cited United Kingdom diplomats, saying Pyongyang was demanding the U.S. president personally call Kim Jong-un as one of the conditions to relieve the current conflict at hand. Itar-Tass also quoted the U.K.’s Sky News as saying North Korea currently has eight nuclear warheads.

Recent research indicates that the number of people who do not consider themselves a part of an organized religion is steadily on the rise. Interestingly enough, though the number of those religiously unaffiliated is increasing, there is little to no trend in the number of those who express atheist or agnostic beliefs. People aren’t saying they don’t believe in God. They’re saying they don’t believe in religion. They are not rejecting Christ. They are rejecting the church. This begs the question, “Why are we losing our religion?”

HARTFORD, Conn. -- With time running out on the chance to pass gun control legislation, President Barack Obama on Monday warned Congress not to use delaying tactics against tighter regulations and told families of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting victims that he´s "determined as ever" to honor their children with tougher laws. Obama´s gun control proposals have run into resistance on Capitol Hill, leaving their fate in doubt. Efforts by Senate Democrats to reach compromise with Republicans over expanding required federal background checks have yet to yield an agreement, and conservatives were promising to try

Los Angeles — Some people have had it with TV. They´ve had enough of the 100-plus channel universe. They don´t like timing their lives around network show schedules. They´re tired of $100-plus monthly bills. A growing number of them have stopped paying for cable and satellite TV service, and don´t even use an antenna to get free signals over the air. (Snip) Last month, the Nielsen Co. started labeling people in this group "Zero TV" households, because they fall outside the traditional definition of a TV home. There are 5 million of these residences in the U.S., up from

Beginning a week of high pressure on gun control, the White House on Monday accused some Republican senators of cowardice for planning to filibuster gun legislation without allowing the full Senate to vote on President Obama’s initiatives. “If they oppose this legislation, have the courage to say so on the floor and vote no,” said White House press secretary Jay Carney. “Don’t block it. Don’t hide behind a procedural action to prevent a vote. That’s the wrong thing to do, and that’s how the president clearly feels.”

There was growing buzz over the weekend that a bipartisan agreement on gun control — a deal that would expand background checks — could hit the floor as early as this week. However, any deal could be derailed by the looming threat of a Republican filibuster involving Texas Sen. Ted Cruz. With Cruz standing proudly in the way of any gun legislation, Democrats are trying to make him pay a political price — and even a couple of high-profile Republicans are questioning his tactics.
