Food stamps put Rhode Island town
on monthly boom-and-bust cycle

Washington Post, by Eli Saslow

WOONSOCKET, R.I. – The economy of Woonsocket was about to stir to life. Delivery trucks were moving down river roads, and stores were extending their hours. The bus company was warning riders to anticipate “heavy traffic.” A community bank, soon to experience a surge in deposits, was rolling a message across its electronic marquee on the night of Feb. 28: “Happy shopping! Enjoy the 1st.” In the heart of downtown, Miguel Pichardo, 53, watched three trucks jockey for position at the loading dock of his family-run International Meat Market. For most of the month,

FTA: "Three years into an economic recovery, this is the lasting scar of collapse: a federal program that began as a last resort for a few million hungry people... "

Every news story becomes a liberal screed packed with lies, blaming GW Bush when necessary.

In some states, they simply recharge those magic food stamp cards on a set schedule throughout the month, to ease the crush of all the food stamp "clients" into the stores. Know who pushed for this? Huge retailers such as Walmart, because it eases scheduling of cashiers and spreads their tax transfer income more evenly.

(Side effect of this is that it´s now impossible to avoid rubbing elbows with food stamp thieves; can´t simply avoid shopping the first week of the month anymore.)

I freely admit clipping coupons and shopping 3-4 stores. You have to figure out ways to maximize your budget no matter what your age range or where your grocery money comes from; however I do feel badly for those with little children. It´s not easy to make them understand, but I´d bet most of their parents voted for the present administration...

These people will most likely spend their whole lives dependent on taxpayers. And they´ll pump-out a few more life-long dependents of their own. Multiply that by about 40 million more and you see that our country is doomed.

Actually the couple in the story is trying. They both worked full-time until they were laid off, they both took the only part-time jobs they could find.

Maybe one of the church food banks could train some of these people about freezing food, set up canning centers in the church, teach nutrition, and meatless meals. They don´t get enough to eat lavishly, but, ramen and string cheese are not the most economical buys either.

In our early married years we had more than a few meatless meals, primarily egg noodles flavored with ketchup or some type of soup.
We paid for it ourselves.

This sad story is so indicative of why people get into so much trouble to begin with - human weakness for instant gratification, and those who exploit it.

For instance, why do they have to spend ALL their funds at one time? It appears that they are encouraged, rewarded, and expected to do so. It probably gives the rich liberal do-gooders (on someone else´s dime) in RI an extra-smug tingle up their legs to see all the little people frantically lining up on the first.

#13, Americans have become obese as we have adopted the low-fat myth. Ramen, noodles with ketchup, are not nutritious, but are empty calories, adding weight. And no one would call that lavish.

A healthy diet, with good meats, cheeses, milk, fresh veggies, and fresh fruit is expensive. It is much easier to eat syrupy canned fruit, non-nutritious canned veggies (which all of us grew up on, granted), spaghetti, beans and rice, etc. Which according to many doctors, piles on the pounds.

Half of all rich people are fat too.

Reply 15 - Posted by: balogreene, 3/17/2013 6:18:43 PM     (No. 9229922)

Sorry, I´m posting too much, but, these people obviously need to be educated about food. Don´t buy Fruit Loops, buy a box of Quaker Oats, and make a healthier breakfast for your kids for a month or more. And don´t waste your food stamp money on cookies.

Last, don´t take your kids shopping if they are going to be brats and force you to spend more.

Reply 16 - Posted by: bighambone, 3/17/2013 6:49:56 PM     (No. 9229988)

Most of those people get a food stamp credit card for their whole family, but "double dip" by sending their children to eat at the public school "free" breakfast, lunch, and dinner programs that now operate 12 months of the year.

The country should stop all but very high skilled immigration until the country´s fiscal problems are straightened out. The world population is at about 6 billion people, most of them poor and unskilled, while the entire population of US citizens is about 300 million people. Clearly the country can´t continue with "open borders" and promote a social welfare state without ultimately going broke.

Reply 17 - Posted by: lakerman1, 3/17/2013 6:55:17 PM     (No. 9229993)

In many cities in the NE and Midwest, food stamp allotments are sold, fifty cents on the dollar. (The rapper who calls himself fifty cent is flaunting that inside joke )
Then the recipients go to various food banks, sometimes carpooling, in a car purchased for them with federal funds in a program called wheels to work.
We are doomed.

Agree with number 15. Just a quick look at the groceries indicates poor planning. The little kid with the "juice box" is a good example. Juice boxes are expensive because you´re paying for the convenience of packaging. If you´re going to give the kid sweet fruit flavored drinks, get the kid a sippy cup and buy kool-aid.

Secretary of State John Kerry is worth some $200 million, give or take a yacht. So his decision to slap a 5% pay cut on himself in solidarity with government employees squeezed by sequestration won’t likely hurt him much. But he’s saving taxpayers another way, too — if unintentionally. And it’s downright troubling. How else is Kerry saving money? He’s failing to hire folks to fill key spots at his agency. Terrific. Think about it: With the North Koreans threatening nuclear strikes against America — and Kerry himself preparing to visit South Korea this week — wouldn’t it be a tad helpful

In March, the number of Americans who dropped out of the labor force increased by 663,000 which adds up to a record 90 million Americans who are no longer looking for employment. Zero Hedge reported: This was the biggest monthly increase in people dropping out of the labor force since January 2012, when the BLS did its census recast of the labor numbers. And even worse, the labor force participation rate plunged from an already abysmal 63.5% to 63.3% - the lowest since 1979!But at least it helped with the now painfully grotesque propaganda

After 69 years, Newt Gingrich is wealthy, a celebrity, and the owner of a tony home in Northern Virginia. His place in the history books, as the leader of the Republican revolution, has long been established. But the former House speaker isn’t ready to fade away. “I don’t rule it out,” he said on Thursday over breakfast, when asked about a future presidential run. He spoke excitedly about his company, Gingrich Productions, and his upcoming trip to South Carolina, where he won the Republican primary last year. Gingrich’s unflagging energy isn’t surprising.

Going with his parental gut, President Obama applauded in 2011 when Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius barred girls under 17 from obtaining the morning-after pill without a prescription. He pictured 10- and 11-year-olds buying pregnancy prevention medicine as easily as bubble gum and drew a line. “As the father of two daughters, it makes sense to apply some common sense,” the President said. Now, a Brooklyn federal judge has ruled that moms and dads — including the ones in the White House — are owed no legal say over whether very young daughters can pop a hormonal contraceptive

It would take superspin powers to portray the March jobs report as anything other than a huge step in the wrong direction. The US economy added just 88,000 jobs last month, 95,000 in the private sector as public payrolls fell by 7,000. The official unemployment rate ticked down a tenth of a point to 7.6%. 1. That is a paltry number of jobs, more or less matching assumed labor force growth per month. So the economy must add at least that many jobs just to keep the labor market at current depressed levels.

Senator Marco Rubio is the man of the hour. He has deftly positioned himself as the indispensable figure in this year’s immigration debate. His participation has given the Gang of Eight approach to amnesty some insulation from grassroots conservative criticism, at least for a time. Liberals in Congress understand that his imprimatur is essential to get Republican votes for the amnesty. But Rubio’s position as a bridge between the parties on immigration means he faces conflicting demands. He wants to ride success on immigration to the 2016 presidential nomination but has also made hard commitments to conservatives
