As drone monopoly frays,
Obama seeks global rules

WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama, who vastly expanded U.S. drone strikes against terrorism suspects overseas under the cloak of secrecy, is now openly seeking to influence global guidelines for their use as China and other countries pursue their own drone programs. The United States was the first to use unmanned aircraft fitted with missiles to kill militant suspects in the years after the September 11, 2001, attacks on New York and Washington.

The emergence of drones, and particularly the miniaturization of them, is going to be a plague on the entire human race. This may in fact become the ultimate tool that leads to "1984".

It´s really the first technology that makes it possible to track, identify, and terminate any individual anywhere in the world, and to do so for virtually unlimited numbers of them. There will be no place to hide to avoid them. And with such control will eventually come the rise of global, evil, unstoppable tyranny.

The actor Bryan Cranston smiles a lot, but when he isn´t doing so, his craggy features settle into a default expression of unyielding menace. "My face, in repose, is mean," he tells the Guardian´s photographer, apologetically, at the Manhattan photo studio where we meet. "I scare people. You know how some people have a built-in smile? I look like I´m going to eat children." Cranston, 58, is currently appearing on Broadway as Lyndon Johnson in All the Way, a three-hour play that taxes his vocal cords – on Mondays, when there´s no performance, he obeys a vow of silence.

The Obama administration will soon issue new Obamacare guidelines allowing people to enroll in health coverage after a March 31 deadline, but only under certain circumstances, according to sources close to the administration. The sources said the new federal guidelines for consumers in the 36 states served by the federal health insurance marketplace and its website, HealthCare.gov, would allow people to enroll after March 31 if they had tried earlier and were prevented by system problems including technical glitches. On Friday, the administration published in the Federal Register new regulations that would allow state-run marketplaces new flexibility in setting insurance coverage effective

In the wake of the Romney/Ryan ticket’s defeat in 2012, progressive pundits engaged in a round of self-congratulation, spending considerable hours pontificating on the systemic and intractable defects plaguing the GOP. Some on the left observed that the Republican Party fails to appeal to young and minority voters because they are viewed as a party focused entirely on preserving the gains made by those who are already successful. They advised the GOP to devote their attention to the problems faced by everyday Americans, specifically those of the less fortunate. It may surprise you to know that partisan Democrats do not

SALEM, Ore. — As the federal health care overhaul was rolled out over the last few years, Oregon was invariably the eager overachiever in the first row, waving a hand to volunteer. The governor, John Kitzhaber, a doctor who left the emergency room for politics, made health care his main issue. Fellow Democrats controlling the Legislature went along, embracing ambitious plans to extend insurance coverage and Medicaid to low-income residents. Yet for all that, by some measures Oregon has among the most dysfunctional online insurance exchanges in the nation. Only about 50,000 people in Oregon have signed up for a commercial

If you haven’t seen it, John Hinderaker at Powerline has a devastating fact-check on a shabby piece in the Washington Post today on the Koch Brothers. Read it here. The authors of the Post piece, Steve Mufson and Juliet Eilperin, have responded. Here’s the bulk of it: First, regarding the political leaning of the group that brought this story to our attention, our article makes clear its left-wing origins, the controversial nature of its earlier claims, and its political agenda. Second, regarding whether Koch would benefit from the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline, we make clear that many of Koch’s leases

O-Care premiums to skyrocket

Health industry officials say ObamaCare-related premiums will double in some parts of the country, countering claims recently made by the administration. The expected rate hikes will be announced in the coming months amid an intense election year, when control of the Senate is up for grabs. The sticker shock would likely bolster the GOP’s prospects in November and hamper ObamaCare insurance enrollment efforts in 2015. The industry complaints come less than a week after Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius sought to downplay concerns about rising premiums in the healthcare sector. She told lawmakers rates would increase in 2015 but

Mayor de Blasio can fight with the groundhog. He can fight with the governor. He can fight with charter-school lady Eva Moskowitz. But on this St. Patrick’s Day, he’d be wise to drop his fight with the Irish. De Blasio promised last year that his first act as mayor would be to kill 300 middle-class jobs, many held by Irish immigrants. “Here it goes,” he pledged. “First thing, it’s time to ban horse carriages in New York.” Why? The horses are well-treated, as everybody (except the don’t-bother-us-with-facts folks at PETA) knows by now.Simple. A tiny cadre of donors showered the mayor with

WASHINGTON — Mitt Romney said Sunday that President Barack Obama is naive when it comes to Russia, has shown "faulty judgment" about Moscow´s intentions and could have done more to try to deter its annexation of Crimea. The 2012 Republican presidential nominee said Obama didn´t have the foresight to anticipate Russia´s moves and should have been working earlier with allies to make clear the penalties that Russia would face if it moved into Ukraine. Romney did acknowledge that such steps may not have been enough though to hold back Russia President Vladimir Putin. "Had we communicated those things, there´s always

A few weeks ago, I wrote about how the sweeping acceptance of gay marriage in recent years is owed in large part to Christianity. Rejecting the rigidly hierarchical and stratified societies of the ancient world, Jesus Christ taught the equal dignity of all persons, proclaimed that the meek shall inherit the earth, and declared that the last shall be first and the first shall be last. The Western world has been working out the logic of these subversive teachings ever since, with the institutional transformation of marriage being the latest, though surely not the last, example of its social, moral,

That goes beyond hypocritical, and I think the American media and the international media has every right to call her and the Obama administration on that — that they permitted that to happen,” said Tom Whalen, a political history professor at Boston University. “It makes you shake your head, albeit sadly.” The first lady stopped at Peking University in Beijing yesterday
