Vatican City - Pope Francis, giving his clearest indication yet that he wants a more austere Catholic Church, said on Saturday that it should be poor and remember that its mission is to serve the poor. Francis, speaking mostly off-the-cuff and smiling often, made his comments in an audience for journalists where he explained why he chose to take the name Francis, after St. Francis of Assisi, a symbol of peace, austerity and poverty. He called Francis "the man who gives us this spirit of peace, the poor man", and added: "Oh, how I would like a poor Church, and for the poor."
Comments: It is obvious that Pope Francis was speaking of a simpler time in his priesthood. Now, when he starts actioning off priceless religious objects on EBay, I´ll worry. Until then, I´ll believe that his heart is in tune with his "patron" namesake, St. Francis.
In an alternative headline story: Rabbi Obama wants America to be poor and for the poor. Rabbi Obama, speaking off the cuff after a grueling 18 holes of golf on Maui told eager reporters that he would do all he could to make sure every American was poor and that the country would be poor and all people would lead lives of austerity and humility. He took the title of Rabbi so he could be the ecxample and teach people that poverty is a divine way of life. After his round, he took his 747 to Marthas Vineyard where another 18 holes of golf and dined on Maine lobsters, filet mignon, coconut crusted shrimp and Caesar salas and several bottles of estate wines, ending the evening on tiramisou and creme brulet with 100 year old sherry and a Cuban cigar.
Well, the Pope is now speaking the language of the left after they´ve been badgering him since he´s been on the job.I´m sure they´re hoping he liquidates the church´s assets and drops $20 bills on the poor.
I hope someone tells the Pope the only way for the poor to get ahead is through economic development, otherwise both them and the church will be poor.
From what I´ve read, he was not a proponent of liberation theology at all. He was a proponent of communion theology, which placed Jesus Christ at the heart of helping the poor. In fact, his efforts to rid the Jesuit province of the liberation theology Jesuits may be what cost him his post as the head of the province and may have resulted in the Jesuits sending him to teach math and science in a small town in the mountains, effectively exiling him. He also has crossed swords with the the socialist/communist government of Argentina for the last 20 yrs. It was Pope John Paul II that "rescued" him and appointed him auxillary bishop of Buenos Aires, later as Archbishop, and finally as Cardinal in 2001. Do you really think that the anti-communist Pope John Paul II, who fought the communist government would have done any of that if Jorge Mario Cardinal Bergoglio was a marxist, which is what liberation theology is at heart? But if you want to believe the liberal media that will be trying really hard to besmirch Pope Francis as they tried to besmirch Pope Benedict XVI, go ahead, play into their hands.
I apologize if I sounded a tad bit abrupt. I just know that the liberal media, especially the far left will be doing everything to attack Pope Francis. He is orthodox in his teachings of the teachings of the Church. He´s against the evils of abortion, birth control, same sex "marriage", and euthanasia. He´s against women´s ordination. Basically, he´s CATHOLIC and will adhere to and teach the doctrines and dogmas of the Church. So, although he´s a proponent of helping the poor (which the Church is FOR), the fact that he thinks that Catholics who don´t adhere to the teachings of the Church shouldn´t receive the Eucharist. That alone will anger Pelosi and Biden. It´s already upset Tim Russet´s spawn.
Read up some on South American history, our present Pope has demonstrated not just anti-communism, but free speech and freedom of religion--and historically at I might add at great personal danger to himself and associates.
And what Spidey, pray tell, have you sacrificed or learned in the last thirty+ years that qualifies you as an expert on anything?
This, I´m afraid, is a bad sign. Why would anyone want to elevate poverty into an ideal for everyone? Isn´t that exactly the opposite of everything Americans should stand for? That is what the Left does, since socialism creates poverty. Making poverty into a moral good with religious overtones only facilitates the Left´s anti-prosperity, collectivist agenda. People can and should live humbly if they so choose, but a Thou Shalt Be Poor attitude from the Vatican will only have the Left licking its jaws.
Well, we waited with baited breath to see which way he would swing and now we know. This Pope has spoken his first message and it sounds an awful lot like one coming from the liberation philosophy camp. Perhaps that is why while this man was Cardinal in Argentina, it turned from Catholicism to secular.
The Church ideals is to be poor in spirit not really poor. This is a difficult topic because there will always be marxists ( materialists ) there to confuse the issue. The first marxist who is on the record with Our Lord on this topic is Judas. He objected to the precious purfume worth 600 days pay, roughly two years income, being used to honour Our Lord for his burial. Yes splurging is sometimes permitted while being poor in spirit. Judas wanted it sold and used to help the poor. The gospel notes that he held the purse and could use the money for himself not the poor. When has Obama wanted to help the poor when it is a question of diverting money from a green energy project. The marxists always invoke this worthy cause against the spending others propose. Real charity is using your own money to help the poor. Anything using others money ( socialism ) is counterfeit charity. Our Lord replies "the poor you will have always with you." He wants us to be charitable but he doesn´t join the war on poverty. The war on poverty is truly a quagmire, it´s goal will never be achieved. We have the wisdome of Our Lord on that point. To be poor in spirit is to never make an idol of money or wealth believing it can fulfill your spirit or life. No material thing as much as we need it can take the place of God. Man does not live on bread alone but on every word from the mouth of God.
Pope Francis is an opponent of Liberation Theology. As Pope JPII helped the fall of communism in Europe, I have hope that Francis will do the same in South America. The Church doesn´t teach that everyone should be poor, it teaches that material riches don´t ensure happiness or salvation. It isn´t the job of the Church to teach people capitalism - too much confusion of religion with economics and politics going on here. Christ ministered to the poor and loved them. If we want to follow in his footsteps, we will remember that and emulate him. Feeding a hungry man from your own pantry is social justice, feeding him because the government tells you to is socialism.
Don´t worry, Pope Francis. When those ambulance-chasing, bottom feeder lawyers get through claiming $millions in damages for sexual abuse claims that in many, many cases never occurred, the Church will be poor. But the lawyers will be rich!
I hope that Pope Francis means by being ´for the poor´ that he will show them how to lift themselves out of poverty. God helps those that help themselves. The church is better suited for this than the government. The government doesn´t take the time to do that. They just throw money at the situtation and it creates poverty and dependence. Let us hope that the Pope has better plans than the government.
First of all, someone tell me why many of the poor countries dominant religion is "Catholic". Secondly, this country and other countries have given billions already and these countries and the people in them are still poor. Maybe they need to stop breeding like rabbits. No wait, that may include contraception which is against church policy. Haiti is a prime example. As a spec ops told me recently, "Their lot would improve immediately if they stopped crapping in the streets."
Not a RC but my Father was and members of my family/DH family are. Right or wrong, I truly believe THIS is the Pope we need at this time. Our Lord chose well. This is the leader we have been waiting for and I thank God he has been chosen.
President Barack Obama is returning to The Tonight Show With Jay Leno. Obama will appear on the Aug. 6 broadcast of NBC´s late-night talker, which would mark his sixth time and the fourth appearance since becoming president. An American international politics publication has reported that the US Air Force plans to dispatch fighter jets and tanker aircraft to northern Australia in the next year. Foreign Policy magazine said it was part of a US strategy to dramatically expand its air defence presence across the Pacific and South-East Asia. (Snip) In a breakfast media briefing, he is reported saying the US would send "fighters, tankers and, at some point in the future, maybe bombers on a rotational basis" to Darwin. General Carlisle is reported to have said the aircraft would initially go to the RAAF base in Darwin
Most fishermen are guilty of the odd photobrag, but none can match this bloke´s cockiness. The Victorian fisherman celebrated catching a huge shark by climbing inside the gutted fish, poking his arm through its gills and posing for a joke shot with his knife buried between its eyes. In a world where every angler is pictured next to his prize catch with a thumbs up, it´s becoming increasingly difficult for intrepid fishermen to stand out. But this guy - let´s call him the Shark Slayer - certainly managed it. ´Arch´, who works at the Metung Hotel in Gippsland, was present when the photo was taken.
Washington - U.S. spy agencies plan to release newly declassified documents as early as this week about the National Security Agency surveillance programs revealed by former contractor Edward Snowden, and also material related to a secret intelligence court, a U.S. intelligence official said on Tuesday. (Snip) The documents would also include information about the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, the official said. That court operates in secrecy in making decisions on government surveillance requests. The Washington Post reported late Tuesday that senior U.S. officials said one of the orders
Washington - President Barack Obama has asked two senior Republican senators to travel to Egypt to meet with its military leaders and the opposition, as Cairo´s allies struggle with how to address the turmoil convulsing the country. (Snip) U.S. officials have been grappling with how to respond to the situation in Egypt since its elected Islamist president, Mohamed Mursi, was ousted by the military on July 3. In particular, they have struggled with how to handle the $1.55 billion in mostly military aid Washington sends to Cairo each year. Egypt has long been an important U.S. ally
In a significant victory for law enforcement, a federal appeals court on Tuesday said that government authorities could extract historical location data directly from telecommunications carriers without a search warrant. The closely watched case, in the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, is the first ruling that squarely addresses the constitutionality of warrantless searches of historical location data stored by cellphone service providers. Ruling 2 to 1, the court said a warrantless search was “not per se unconstitutional” because location data was “clearly a business record”
Washington - Secretary of State John Kerry said Tuesday that Israeli and Palestinian negotiators would convene again in the Middle East within two weeks and that their goal would be to work out a comprehensive peace agreement within nine months that would lead to an independent Palestinian state. (Snip) “Our objective will be to achieve a final status agreement over the course of the next nine months,” Mr. Kerry said. “We all understand the goal that we’re working towards: two states living side by side in peace and security.” As they resume peace talks that have been moribund since 2010,
Three former high-ranking Penn State officials, including the university’s former president, Graham B. Spanier, were ordered Tuesday to stand trial on charges that they were part of a cover-up related to the child sexual abuse scandal involving the former football coach Jerry Sandusky. After a two-day preliminary hearing this week, Harrisburg District Judge William Werner decided there was enough evidence against Spanier, the retired university vice president Gary Schultz and the former athletic director Tim Curley to proceed with a trial, which could start later this year.
Anti-Christian extremist groups like the ACLU, the Freedom From Religion Foundation and People for the American Way hate God. They also hate America. True America. These "progressive" outfits - along with like-minded politicos, judges, Hollywood elitists and left-wing media-types - hate that this great nation was expressly founded upon the bedrock precepts of the Judeo-Christian tradition. And so, in response, they lash out. They endeavor first to raze our God-blessed America, and then raise, from the rubble, a godless America fashioned in their own secular-socialist self-image.
Last week, Utah Sen. Mike Lee (R.) sent a letter to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D., Nev.), “informing Senator Reid that we will not vote for a continuing resolution that funds Obamacare,” risking a government shutdown if Lee’s objectives are not achieved. While eleven other Senate Republicans have signed on to Lee’s letter, other Republicans are denouncing the move in surprisingly direct language. “It’s not an achievable strategy…and it’s dishonest,” said Sen. Tom Coburn (R., Okla.). “It’s the dumbest idea I’ve ever heard of,” added Sen. Richard Burr (R., N.C.).
Republican U.S. senators pushed for more transparency on aid to Egypt, if not an outright end to the $1.3 billion per year in military assistance, as U.S. officials struggled on Monday with how to respond to the crisis in Cairo. Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky, a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, has introduced an amendment to a Senate transportation funding bill that would end military aid to Egypt under a U.S. law banning aid to countries that have experienced military coups, and redirect the money to domestic infrastructure projects. Senate aides said on Monday that the bill and Paul's
Sacramento - Gloria Steinem, Jesse Jackson, Bonnie Raitt and Jay Leno have joined prison hunger strikers in calling for an end to California´s use of solitary confinement to control prison gang violence. The civil rights crusaders, singer and late-night comedian are among those who signed a letter sent Monday to Gov. Jerry Brown. The letter calls isolation units "extensions of the same inhumanity practiced at Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo Bay." The letter to Brown, to be followed by a demonstration Tuesday at the Capitol, was arranged by the National Religion Campaign Against Torture and local
There have been days since her son Ezekiel was born 11 months ago that Los Angeles mom Beth Capper has gone without food to keep up her supply. One friend was arrested for stealing some. It´s not drugs or alcohol or even baby formula that has put her in such a bind. It´s diapers. "There´s no way around buying them," said Capper, a 41-year-old single mother who doesn´t work because of a disability. Across the country, mothers like Capper are facing the same predicament. According to a report published Monday in the
America is in great shape energy-wise. We have more gas and oil reserves than ever before. Indeed, the United States could shortly become the world’s largest exporter of coal. Our cheaper power rates may bring energy-intensive industry back from Europe and Asia. President Obama has been rolling up his sleeves campaigning across the country delivering a surreal stump speech message supposedly aimed at the middle class: big government works, Obamacare is manna from heaven, the wave of recent scandals are “phony” figments of the imagination, and all economic problems are the fault of the Republicans. Conveniently, he leaves out the bankruptcy of Detroit, a city run by his own party for more than half a century. His message is so stale and unconvincing, that even The New York Times and Washington Post have noticed. Both papers, usually loyal to Obama, remarked that
FORNEY, Texas - George Zimmerman, the former Florida neighborhood watch leader cleared of all charges in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, was pulled over for speeding in North Texas on Sunday, CBS DFW reports. According to the station, Zimmerman was armed when officers pulled him over on Highway 80 in Forney, east of Dallas. (Snip) The officer reportedly did not recognize Zimmerman, who was driving a Honda pickup. Zimmerman told the officer he was armed and was then told to put the weapon in his glove compartment, according to the station.
Arizona Sen. John McCain was the Republican Party´s 2008 presidential nominee and he still wants the keys to the Oval Office. But he is beginning to sound more like a fan of likely 2016 Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. "She´s a rock star," he said in a newly released interview. "She has, maybe not glamour, but certainly the aura of someone widely regarded throughout the world," he added in a reference to her work as secretary of State. McCain, reportedly trying to win back his reputation as a GOP maverick, was asked by the New Republic
Gotta figure her lead would be even bigger without Joe Miller in the field here. Her nomination for the taking? Alaska should be a top tier pick up opportunity for Senate Republicans next year…but their top choice of a candidate is Sarah Palin. 36% of GOP primary voters in the state say they’d like Palin to be their standard bearer against Mark Begich to 26% for Mead Treadwell, 15% for Dan Sullivan, and 12% for Joe Miller.
Embattled Internal Revenue Service official Lois Lerner and an attorney in the Federal Election Commission’s general counsel’s office appear to have twice colluded to influence the record before the FEC’s vote in the case of a conservative non-profit organization, according to e-mails unearthed by the House Ways and Means Committee and obtained exclusively by National Review Online. The correspondence suggests the discrimination of conservative groups extended beyond the IRS and into the FEC, where an attorney from the agency’s enforcement division in at least one case sought and received tax information about the status of a conservative group,
Sen. John McCain — a Democrat? There was confusion Wednesday after the Arizona Republican mistakenly strolled into President Obama’s meeting with Senate Democrats at the Capitol. The room full of Democrats — who happened to be meeting in the same room where the Senate GOP usually holds their weekly policy luncheons — erupted in applause and laughter as the former Republican presidential candidate made his entrance. As McCain, 76, walked out of the Dem-filled space, reporters pressed him as to why he stepped foot in the room.
In an interview on National Public Radio (NPR), House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said her new agenda for women will give mothers access to day care so they can “earn without carrying the burden of child care.” During the interview, aired on Weekend Edition Sunday, Pelosi spoke about her newly announced agenda, which is on her website, and is titled, “When Women Succeed, America Succeeds: An Economic Agenda for Women and Families,” a plan that includes universal pre-school and access to day care for working women, and an increase in the minimum wage.
Karl Rove and more than one hundred Republican donors sent a letter to Republican members of Congress on Tuesday, urging them to pass a comprehensive immigration reform bill that would include, among other provisions, granting "legal status" to illegal aliens who meet certain criteria. Anticipating that lawmakers will face resistance to the bill when they go home for the August recess, the letter marks the escalation of a campaign in which Republican leaders and donors are pressuring House Republicans to act on an immigration reform bill.
I never thought the Trayvon Martin/George Zimmerman case deserved nearly the attention it got. But reasonable people can disagree about that. What strikes me as unconscionable, however, is the way the supposedly objective media have not only sensationalized a tragedy but at times appear to deliberately bend the facts to fit a desired story line. Maybe it started with the use of pictures of a younger Martin or with the sudden embrace of the term "white Hispanic" to describe Zimmerman in order to more easily paint him as a racist. NBC News was the most egregious offender
