The Internet is a surveillance state
CNN, by Bruce Schneier

Original Article

Posted By:ruready?, 3/16/2013 9:10:45 PM

I´m going to start with three data points. One: Some of the Chinese military hackers who were implicated in a broad set of attacks against the U.S. government and corporations were identified because they accessed Facebook from the same network infrastructure they used to carry out their attacks. Two: Hector Monsegur, one of the leaders of the LulzSac hacker movement, was identified and arrested last year by the FBI. [snip] And three: Paula Broadwell, who had an affair with CIA director David Petraeus, similarly took extensive precautions to hide her identity.

Comments:
Liberals seem to worry about this more than conservatives.

I do worry about it. I don´t like people or governments knowing things that are none of their business. America used to be about private people living their private lives. The communists sure fixed that.
The only bright spot is that they are so inundated with worthless data that they may have trouble weeding out the garbage to get to the meat.

OP - liberals may seem to, but really *do not* worry about this more than conservatives. Liberals instituted the Income Tax and Social Security. And Obamacare. It´s the liberals who put the "state" in "surveillance state."

Thad Cochran has made a lot of important friends during his 35 years in the Senate — and they haven’t forgotten about him as he stares down a challenge from the right. Former Senate colleagues Bob Dole (R-Kan.), Pete Domenici (R-N.M.), Bob Packwood (R-Ore.) and Steve Symms (R-Idaho) all donated to the Mississippi Republican during the first three months of the year, as did the leadership PACs of two of Cochran’s colleagues, Sens. Mark Kirk of Illinois and Kelly Ayotte of New Hampshire, according to newly filed campaign finance documents. The lawmakers donating to Cochran come mostly from the party’s

Thirty-seven percent (37%) of Likely U.S. Voters now fear the federal government, according to a new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey. Forty-seven percent (47%) do not, but another 17% are not sure. Perhaps in part that’s because 54% consider the federal government today a threat to individual liberty rather than a protector. Just 22% see the government as a protector of individual rights, and that’s down from 30% last November. Slightly more (24%) are now undecided. (To see survey question wording, click here.) As recently as December 2012, voters were evenly divided on this question: 45% said the federal government

A week and a half ago, when House Republican leaders realized that their own conservative members might align to defeat legislation protecting Medicare physicians from a big automatic pay cut, they took the unusual step of cutting them out of the tangle altogether. While negotiations were ongoing, the Majority Leader, Eric Cantor, darted on to the House floor and, after brief consultation with Democratic leaders, cleared the Medicare "doc fix" by voice vote—a procedure that´s typically reserved for fast tracking uncontroversial legislation. The yeahs and nays were not recorded. A bill that divided the GOP conference, and might very well

With swimsuit season right around the corner, a new science-based, anti-diet book offers the most enabling advice we’ve heard this year: Those thunder thighs you hate so much might be key to long life. “The Obesity Paradox” presents compelling evidence that those with excess baggage might be healthier and better able to fight off diseases than normal-weight counterparts. Conversely, the “thin and unfit” waifs have the worst body types for long-term health. Though obesity remains a risk factor of “epidemic portions” — more, some researchers say, than smoking or alcoholism— associated with heart disease, stroke, Type-2 diabetes,

Wenzhou - Thousands of Chinese Christians have mounted an extraordinary, round-the-clock defence of a church in a city known as the ´Jerusalem of the East´ after Communist Party officials threatened to bulldoze their place of worship. In an episode that underlines the fierce and long-standing friction between China´s officially atheist Communist Party and its rapidly growing Christian congregation, Bible-carrying believers this week flocked to the Sanjiang church in Wenzhou hoping to protect it from the bulldozers. Their 24-hour guard began earlier this week when a demolworshippers say cost around 30 million yuan (£2.91

At a Glance: The current cockfighting law contains language that makes it difficult to enforce because it specifies a certain species of chicken. Proposed legislation would fix the loophole by expanding it to include any kind of foul forced into fighting for sport. It also increases penalties by putting them on par with dog fighting. The Louisiana Senate Judiciary C Committee advanced the bill Tuesday (April 1), but not without some debate from a St. Landry Parish lawmaker about ramifications of the proposed law revisions on a sport he called "chicken boxing." The bill: Senate Bill 523, sponsored by Sen.

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal confirmed he is considering running for president in 2016, during an interview with the Heritage Foundation during its annual Resource Bank meeting in New Orleans. "It´s something we´re thinking about. It´s something we´ll pray about. But...we have to win the war of ideas first," Jindal told Genevieve Wood of Heritage´s The Foundry, a right-leaning news service, during the meeting this past week. "We´ve got to win the elections in 2014. And after we do that, we´re certainly giving it some thought. Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) on Wednesday blasted the Obama administration’s decision to extend enrollment in the healthcare law’s insurance exchange for some people. “What the hell is this, a joke?” Boehner said at his weekly press conference. He was responding to the administration’s announcement on Tuesday evening that people who had begun the process of signing up for insurance through the federal exchanges would have until mid-April to do so, instead of March 31. The Speaker called the move “another deadline made meaningless,” adding it to a litany of unilateral changes to the law that the administration has made.

The shock is that the same poll found his disapproval level down to its lowest since last fall. The Obama administration is poised to entertain a flood of new clemency applications from thousands of federal prisoners who were given harsh sentences under mandatory-minimum laws following drug convictions, Attorney General Eric Holder said Monday. Holder said in a short videotaped statement that he wants to shrink the federal prison population by a modest amount while ensuring ´that those who have paid their debts have a chance to become productive citizens.´ At the center of the move is a set of old sentencing rules that punished crack-cocaine offenders with more time behind bars than users or traffickers of powder cocaine.

If Jeb reaches for the nomination, there will be a titanic battle between the party establishment and the Tea Party. Steve Schmidt, McCain’s strategist in 2008, insists that in the end Republicans usually settle on the most electable candidate. To get by, this Bush may be forced to trim his positions, although the cautionary tale of Romney suggests that he would have to tack artfully and carefully for the sake of the general election. Certainly he will have the resources to outlast, discredit, and disqualify his rivals.

Washington - Michelle Obama said "splurging is the key to life" if you regularly eat right and stay active. Her biggest guilty pleasure: French fries. "How would you appreciate vegetables if you never had chocolate?" she asked. "You couldn´t live without a little chocolate, a little French fries." The first lady took questions from children reporters Monday after appearing at the White House Easter Egg Roll. She told the children that if they eat right the majority of the time, then a splurge or snack is not going to hurt them. "I still splurge when I can, but that's why I try to exercise almost every day," she said.

There’s a pattern of falsifying statistics throughout the entire Census Bureau. And anyone who attempts to blow the whistle on the fraud is either retaliated against or ignored, according to two new sources who have experienced the process firsthand. As I’ve been writing for more than six months, the Census Bureau office in Philadelphia uncovered a case of fraud in 2010, did nothing about it and allowed the practice to continue. In that instance, a data collector named Julius Buckmon was faking reports that went into the nation’s all-important jobless tally and consumer-inflation survey. Because the Census Bureau’s surveys are scientific — meaning

Global sea levels have risen by 8 inches (20cm) since 1880 and scientists predict they could rise up to 3ft (98cm) by 2100. But despite the UN’s recent threats of war, famine and extreme weather, such a dramatically different world caused by sea level rise can be hard to imagine. To help picture the future, Martin Vargic, an amateur graphic designer from Slovakia, has created a map depicting the planet with sea levels around 260ft (79m) higher than they are today. He imagines what Earth would look like if the ice sheets surrounding the North and South poles melted, releasing
