Bloomberg’s Soda Folly
National Review Online, by Rich Lowry

Original Article

New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg’s ban on large-size sugary drinks at certain establishments, colloquially known as the soda ban, is a lesson in how to make your cause look ridiculous. Bloomberg hoped the ban would spark a nationwide crackdown on sugary beverages. Instead, it became the subject of widespread mockery, inspired an instant-classic New York Post headline (“Soda Jerk”), and got struck down by a New York judge this week as “arbitrary and capricious.” You could say that Bloomberg jumped the shark, except shark-jumping is associated with undue health risks that may burden public hospitals in the vicinities

This wasn´t meant to hold up. It was a publicity stunt to condition people into believing sodas cause obesity.

#1, probably true.

I think people have been conditioned the past 50 years not to question much. For example, seat belt laws are extremely condescending. Why MUST I buckle my seat belt if I am driving less than 25 MPH? Why can´t I make that choice?

Actually I use my late model Honda CRV to drive dirt road around my property/neighbors. Less than 5MPH. Seat belt warning is banging the entire time. Not up to me. Progressives made decision for me.

I don´t even see how it would work. We just came back from a week long driving vacation. We stopped at a few fast food places during this week. All three of us drink unsweetened iced tea with nothing else added (except for lemon if that is available). What the places do is hand you a cup and then you choose your drink. We choose an unsweetened drink but would we be forbidden from getting a large drink because we could have chosen a sweetened drink? What about when we used to go to movies and occasionally get a soda? We would get the large soda and have people share. It was a cost savings for me and my kids were thin anyway. DOn´t tell me what to eat or drink.

Has nanny Bloomberg explained that a 16 oz. cup filled with ice will not hold 16 oz. of liquid? Seems to me you should receive a 16 oz. cup of liquid with no ice, and an additional cup of ice.

But, then, the little man with billions of dollars in wealth should dictate to all his subjects just what they are allowed to consume while in his princedom.

The Republican “Young Guns” are ready to rule, if they get the chance. Since they first got the name seven years ago, allies and enemies of Eric Cantor, Paul Ryan and Kevin McCarthy are now beginning to jockey to prepare for potential changes at the top of the Republican power structure in the House. Though publicly Speaker John Boehner has said he plans to keep the gavel in the next Congress, most players in Boehnerland think the speaker hasn’t made up his mind about when he’ll call it quits. President Obama is pressuring Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to make peace right quick — with an implicit threat that otherwise the Jewish state will lose legitimacy. That’s profoundly wrong. In an interview with Jeffrey Goldberg of Bloomberg View, Obama asserted that “if Palestinians come to believe that the possibility of a contiguous, sovereign Palestinian state is no longer within reach, then our ability to manage the international fallout is going to be limited.” Those words give pernicious credibility to a corrosive movement that sees Israel as the root of all evil in the Middle East.

Before Western leaders could even finalize their plans for economic sanctions on Russia in response to its shocking, unprovoked aggression in Ukraine, the Russian economy had already entered freefall. Putin’s crude blunder in Crimea is the worst Russian foreign policy mistake of the Putin era, and his country may never recover from it. As trading opened on the Russian stock market Monday morning, stocks entered freefall, shedding over ten percent of their value. The Russian currency, the ruble, went right down with the market, striking a new low against the U.S. dollar. And the losses by the ruble were actually vastly understated. In

Today, Republicans appear a bit more likely to gain than to lose seats; it would take a cataclysmic event for Democrats to score the net gain of the 17 seats they need to take the majority. What’s changed is that Democrats’ chances of holding onto their majority in the Senate is looking increasingly tenuous.
