Sacred mystery: Blockbuster ratings for ‘The Bible’ confound Hollywood

| Sure, it’s easy to criticize Hollywood, but try to remember that the entertainment industry today is an intellectually demanding environment, fraught with cognitively challenging, even intractable, questions, like, to take one recent example: How can the cable mini-series “The Bible” be such a ratings hit when there is no audience for overtly religious entertainment programming? According to the latest Nielsens, released Tuesday, Sunday night’s telecast of “The Bible,” produced by husband-and-wife team Mark Burnett and Roma Downey for basic cable’s History channel, managed to attract more viewers than anything on broadcast network NBC … during the entire week.

Most of the TV shows are competing for the same audience: 17 - 35 yo´s who drink beer, party, and don´t think a lot. If you put 6 shows on at the same time for this group, then you split the audience 6 ways. Meanwhile, everyone outside of this demographic is starved for content. Put 1 show on that appeals to them and they all flock there.
Unfortunately, companies that advertise on TV are only interested in those 17 - 35 yo´s, because they aren´t set in their ways and can be persuaded more easily via an ad.

Watched the first show but there was so much left out. The story did not flow and there were things added that are not bibical.
If you are going to watch something of this genre you need to know your Bible and not take it at face value.

God purposely chose what the world considers nonsense in order to shame the wise, and he chose what the world considers weak in order to shame the powerful.

No way all the Bible could be displayed in 20 hours. This was/is meant to create an appetite for God´s Word, to individually open the Bible and read it for yourself, knowing God is able to open our eyes/ears to His will/way for man to live in this world and eventually spend eternity with Him because He loves US, gave Himself to provide the way to His Kingdom.
The media has selfishly presented their liberal agenda that agrees with Obama, not seeking to speak truth, leading US to God, His plan for US.
Look at what the media continues to do at Christmas time, negating Christ from the most observed holiday holy day).
Wake up America!
We are being blessed with another opportunity to fill our churches, gather our families together to express our appreciation for all God has done for US through Jesus Christ, His only-begotten Son, and His Holy Spirit, ever to deliver US from all evil, here and abroad! Amen

I found Noah´s Scottish accent interesting, but was puzzled by Samson, who was a Danite, being portrayed by a black man. Now Samson may have had a swarthy skin, he certainly would not have had Negro features.

Watched the first episode . Politically correct. Protected the homosexual image. The Bible account has the citizens of Sodom and Gommorah as rife with homosexuals roaming the streets in search of "fresh meat". ( very similar to what we see today with homosexuals gathering in bath houses and frequenting roadside parks and public restrooms in search of anonymous sex).
The citizens in the movie were portrayed as bad men wanting to assault Lot´s relatives and their "guests". No hint of homosexuals on the prowl as in the biblical account. Wonder why?? (Can´t criticize those homosexuals!)

Whatever. I surfed passed it one night, Samson was a burly black man with dreadlocks, no muscle tone. The Philistines, otoh, were all Anglo-Romans looking bunch. WT??? Seems someone had either confused the modern Rastas with the Nazarite and/or feel the need to rewrite the book to put some Afrikaans in to the Bible and made white people the bad guys.
This thing is as authentic as Kwaannzaa.
I kept surfing and hadn´t stopped on that program again since....

FTA: "How can the cable mini-series “The Bible” be such a ratings hit when there is no audience for overtly religious entertainment programming?"
That´s easy. Because there IS an audience for overtly religious TV. Religious programming brings in the people who refuse to watch the pagan and anti-Christian dreck that usually fills the airwaves. There is a HUGE untapped and un-served potential audience out there. But Hollywood will learn nothing from this. Eyes but cannot see. Ears but cannot hear.

The two angels visiting Lot were cool. Of course, they had ninja powers. When I imagine what angels would look like, they always have armor on. The angels were asian and african, but if people are made in G-d´s image, then G-d and most likely his angels have similarities and features of all the world´s races.

I think Bible-believing, Word-studying Christians should not expect the televised version of The Bible to be written for us. This is ´Bible 101´, or ´Introduction to the Word´ if you will. We should not expect it to be comprehensive so long as it is comprehensible. Judging by the response of people who have not considered the Bible before, this presentation is a good thing.
#6, Please consider that the producers may have had in mind keeping the show available to younger viewers.

Well said #4.
I heard a comment about the show, and I told the critical person that it was for "LoFo" Bible studies. It is to reach people who are not scholars but who need to hear about GOD. I thought it was well done. If I want to get in depth Hebrew studies, I´ll go for Michael Rood or some of the others.

I´ve been enjoying the show. It is not meant to be a word for word dramatization of The Bible. That would be impossible. It is meant to introduce people to The Bible. That a black actor played Samson didn´t bother me. He´s just an actor playing a part. One of my favorite movies is The Ten Commandments and I don´t think that was completely historically accurate either.

The deep oceans have yielded many mysteries that have puzzled people for centuries, from the giant squid to huge jellyfish that look like UFOs. To that list add a fish with totally transparent blood. The Ocellated Ice Fish lives in the freezing waters of the Antarctic Ocean, where it manages to keep its body doing all the things that other fish do, but with blood that is absolutely clear, researchers told AFP on Friday. The reason, say experts at Tokyo Sea Life Park, is that the Ocellated Ice Fish has no haemoglobin, making it unique among vertebrates the world over.

A family´s criticism of inflight entertainment allegedly prompted a United flight to be diverted over "security concerns." In a story published in The Atlantic, one family recounts traveling from Denver to Baltimore with two young sons, ages 4 and 8. During the flight, the PG-13-rated detective film "Alex Cross" was shown on drop-down monitors across the plane. The family worried about their young children seeing inappropriate content in the film. "Alarmed by the opening scenes, we asked two flight attendants if they could turn off the monitor; both claimed it was not possible," the family said, according to The Atlantic.

The cascade of WikiLeaks-style revelations shedding light on the often murky world of offshore tax havens began when Gerard Ryle received a mysterious letter in the post. The experienced investigative journalist had been busy trying to unravel the details of a large financial fraud in his native Australia when the prospect of an even bigger scoop landed on his doormat. The letter contained part of a hard drive with the details of 2.5 million digital files, a treasure trove that would ultimately yield information on 120,000 offshore companies and nearly 130,000 individuals.

It’s an ill wind that blows nobody good, and a pipeline leaking on somebody else’s front yard can be a godsend, too. The environmentalists who were waging a losing war against the proposed Keystone pipeline woke up to the news of a small pipeline leak in Arkansas and thought it was Christmas morning. If environmentalists were the praying kind, they would say the Arkansas leak was an answer to their prayers. They think it ends the debate over the Keystone pipeline. One green lobbyist says “this should be the nail in the coffin of the Keystone pipeline.”

She came to power promising to usher in a new dawn in relations with North Korea. Park Geun-hye, who in February became the first female president of South Korea, was elected on the back of a campaign to establish "trustpolitik" – a break with the previous decades of hostilities, and a new emphasis on cooperation and confidence between the sworn enemies. Yet with the increasingly rabid rhetoric coming from Pyongyang, Ms Park will be considering putting her pacifist pledge aside. The North has dramatically ramped up its usually-bellicose statements, with the general staff of the North´s army warning last night

Germs are perfect machines of evolution. Their ability to mutate and survive attempts (by humans and nature) to destroy them has led to some being called "superbugs." Resistant to existing antibiotics, superbug-related infections worldwide result in thousands of deaths each year—an estimated 99,000 in the U.S. alone for each of the past 10 years. These bacteria not only take a tragic toll on human life but involve major costs. A new study by MPHonline.org reports that superbugs are responsible for $20 billion in excess health care costs in the U.S. annually, as well as $35 billion in lost wages

Kuban, who works at the Library of Congress Packard campus in Culpeper, allegedly posted the ads from his work computer. We all know that guns can cost lives because the media repeat this message endlessly, as if we could not figure it out for ourselves. But even someone who reads newspapers regularly and watches numerous television newscasts may never learn that guns also save lives-- much less see any hard facts comparing how many lives are lost and how many are saved. But that trade-off is the real issue, not the Second Amendment or the National Rifle Association, which so many in the media obsess about.

The Obama administration treated the creation of "democracy" in the Middle East as a Good Thing. Ironically, those who created the United States of America viewed democracy with fear-- and created a Constitutional republic instead. Everything depends on how you define democracy. In its most basic sense, democracy means majority rule. But there can be majority rule in a free country or in a country with an authoritarian or even a dictatorial government. In this age of sloppy uses of words, many people include freedom in their conception of democracy. But whether democracy leads to freedom is an open question,

Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, who emerged as the conservative populist in the 2012 GOP presidential primaries, is already running for the 2016 nomination for president. Santorum, who has been making the rounds at conservative media outlets, this week stepped deeper into the presidential pool when he said that he isn´t "doing anything inconsistent" with a 2016 campaign. While refusing to make a flat commitment to a White House run, he told Newsmax TV that "I´m certainly leaving the door open for that." Santorum added, "I´m making no commitments at this point, but we´re not doing anything inconsistent with running in 2016."

According to White House deputy press secretary Josh Earnest, both Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama will be on hand when the 43rd President’s library and museum are dedicated. The last time all five met was in January 2009 before Obama was sworn in, in a meeting and lunch hosted by Bush in the Oval Office for the members of the “world’s most exclusive club.”

President Obama´s biggest gaffe yesterday when speaking of California Attorney General Kamala Harris was not in flirtatiously complimenting her as "the best-looking attorney general," but in introducing an observation from the system of beauty into a forum that was about the system of power. What´s that, you say? Irin Carmon does a great job in Salon in laying out the bounds of propriety for when it´s appropriate to talk about a woman´s looks as a general matter. But I´ve long felt we lack a solid theoretical underpinning for easily discussing these issues, and why precisely it is that
