The brick-and-mortar shop owners receive numerous benefits from the sales taxes: local police and fire protection, infrastructure improvements, etc. If local stores are losing business, then the taxes should be lowered to reduce the penalty of shopping local. Spreading the misery is no solution.

There must be some equity in collection of sales taxes. Perhaps the online retailers should only be responsible for the State sales tax, eliminating the local benefit argument. Elimination of sales tax is not realistic. I prefer a shift away from income taxes, ala Texas, Florida, and perhaps in the near future Louisiana.

If you can limit it to just STATE taxes, and give the federal government NO control over it, then maybe we can talk. Some companies already do this.
The problem is that the counties will want their cut, and then the cities will want theirs, and pretty soon a small hardware store in Ohio that sells appliance parts online will be tasked with knowing and applying the tax rates for every taxing entity in the nation, and which rate to use for every shipping address. How would they know which county or local municipality a buyer is in, other than trust the buyer to fill out that info?
Then the power-grabbers will step in and say that this is too hard, and the federal government will just collect a national sales tax on all online sales to be distributed by them... and all the money is gone.

Some states tax (sales) shoes and clothing - and some states do not. Should we make things "equal" by having the items taxed in all states? Stop the nonsense and get rid of all sales taxes.
If a business sells via internet and is not using any of a states facilities by having a physical building or property making sales in a state they should definitely not have to pay a sales tax.
Will the Democrats ever run out of looking for ways to get into our wallets?

With the expense of shipping going up, it can overwhelm any savings on ducking the sales tax. If someone figures out a way to do business without all the overhead of a brick and mortar edifice, why should the government change the rules to punish them? Where´s the capitalism? Why take business away from USPS, UPS, and fed-ex?

The unemployment rate, because of a terrible statistic, is down to 7.6%. The number of people in this country who are not working is shameful. Ninety million Americans are no longer in the workforce. Ninety million. People not in the labor force grew by 663,000, and now 90 million. That´s the labor force participation rate. This is 1979 levels.
