But he may have met his match in the Watauga County planning department. Mr. Conway, 51 years old, is best known as "The Last American Man," the title character of a 2002 biography and National Book Award finalist by Elizabeth Gilbert, the author of "Eat, Pray, Love." He has lived in the wilderness since the early 1980s. He traps, shoots and grows much of his own food, makes pants out of buckskin and stitches his own wounds.

1000 acres, hmn????? Someone somewhere dropped a dime on ´ol Eustace. Either he pointed a gun at someone and told them to ´´git off my land´´ or there´s a developer who wants to buy the land and Eustace ain´t selling.

We´ve had several attempts to enact a planning and zoning board in our county over the years; particularly during a building boom of poultry houses. But enough people thought that giving that kind of power to a select few was a bad idea and declined. The world hasn´t ended yet and we are still relatively free to use our land as we see fit.

I fully agree that the government oversteps its limits. I remember going to a planning board meeting where the board made a builder move the garage door to the side of the house because they didn´t want to drive by on a Sunday and have to look into the open garage. Having said that, Eustace is a phoney. I watched his show last season. He doesn´t care about anyone but himself. The show made him look like he was one step away from loosing everything. Not one time was the cost of going to his place ever mentioned. The way he treated his interns was out of line, IMHO. His sanitation systems are non existent. I cannot say enough to show my contempt for this person. I´m sure there are more competent people to present his point of view somewhere to be found. I have lived in mountain cabins with the where we had no indoor plumbing and we were much cleaner that "turtle island".

Denver-based CNN journalist Jim Spellman says the total lack of media coverage of the legal travails faced by Fox News reporter Jana Winter for protecting her sources clearly demonstrates an anti-Fox News bias in the press. Spellman claimed in a tweet that if Winter, who faces a subpoena and potential contempt of court charges for protecting her sources, worked for the New York Times instead of Fox News, the case would be garnering far greater exposure. “Observation: If @janawinter, who may go to jail to protect sources, worked for @nytimes instead of @FoxNews the case would be huge,” Spellman tweeted Sunday night.

Secretary of State John Kerry is worth some $200 million, give or take a yacht. So his decision to slap a 5% pay cut on himself in solidarity with government employees squeezed by sequestration won’t likely hurt him much. In March, the number of Americans who dropped out of the labor force increased by 663,000 which adds up to a record 90 million Americans who are no longer looking for employment. It would take superspin powers to portray the March jobs report as anything other than a huge step in the wrong direction. The US economy added just 88,000 jobs last month, 95,000 in the private sector as public payrolls fell by 7,000. The official unemployment rate ticked down a tenth of a point to 7.6%. 1. That is a paltry number of jobs, more or less matching assumed labor force growth per month. So the economy must add at least that many jobs just to keep the labor market at current depressed levels.

North Korea’s young leader Kim Jong-un is waiting for United States President Barack Obama to make a phone call to Pyongyang to discuss easing tensions on the Korean peninsula, according to Russia’s news agency Itar-Tass. The report cited United Kingdom diplomats, saying Pyongyang was demanding the U.S. president personally call Kim Jong-un as one of the conditions to relieve the current conflict at hand. Recent research indicates that the number of people who do not consider themselves a part of an organized religion is steadily on the rise. Interestingly enough, though the number of those religiously unaffiliated is increasing, there is little to no trend in the number of those who express atheist or agnostic beliefs. People aren’t saying they don’t believe in God. They’re saying they don’t believe in religion. They are not rejecting Christ. They are rejecting the church. This begs the question, “Why are we losing our religion?”
