| U.S. Catholics who dreamed of an American pope got their wish — in a way — on Wednesday. A South American. It was Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio, archbishop of Buenos Aires, who emerged from the conclave as Pope Francis. Some U.S. church scholars were thrilled, others cautious, and at least one was critical of another aging pope who may be unwilling or unable to make crucial changes in the church. Here is a pope who has contended with all the issues of the modern West — gay marriage, abortion, contraception, women´s rights,

I´m nervous that he was/is part of the liberation philosophy gang. That would be tragic for the Church. And it was something Pope Benedict worked very hard to eradicate.

He isn´t part of the Liberation Theology gang, he actually fought against it. In terms of doctrine, he is very traditional and hard line. As for the social justice part, if social justice is about love and caring then I am all for it. To confuse the Church´s view of social justice with that of leftist politicians is a mistake.

I think #2 is right. I slept on it and feel good about it this morning. I spoke to several friends last night and we all agreed that having a pope that focuses on both tradition and active outreach to the poor is a wonderful thing. Jesus did that and as Catholics we are called to do that too. I´ll admit that at times it is easy to get swept up in the ritual (which I love and value greatly), politics, and theology and forget that social outreach is fundamentally Catholic. I think this pope will bring a nice balance. Countless saints (and more recently Blessed Mother Theresa) were very conservative in their views while actively loving and caring for the poor and sick.

Sadly, the progs have hijacked the whole social justice idea. But it´s the Catholic church and other churches who actually practice it. When disaster strikes who is out there actually helping? The Salvation Army, Catholic Charities and other faith based organizations. The progs are too busy developing another committee, union or protest march.

I´m a US Catholic and I am not "wary." But then I don´t see everything through the prism of my privates. Face it, Cathy Lynn, people who want to be catholic AND enjoy sodomy, anger, self-hatred, and the joys of never-ending resentment of normal life will forever shun the likes of Francis.

Pope Francis has stated that Catholic politicians who back and favor abortion, pervert marriage and birth control should not be granted or given communion.
His real test will come on March 19th when he says Mass in Rome. If he gives any of these politicians communion (Joe Biden will be there) then we will know he lacks the will to back his words.
Many will be watching!

I am a "U.S.Catholic" and am not wary of the new Pope Francis. I had hoped a US cardinal would be the choice. However, the Holy Spirit chose Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio for the successor to St. Peter. I love our new Pope.I am at peace...not wary. I wish these pundits would speak for themselves and quit inserting their opinions on U.S. Catholics who are NOT wary.

Very predictable, in a matter of hours the liberal, anti Catholic writers, many not withthe Church, coming out of the woodwork . . . he is unwilling and unable to make "crucial changes" - "crucial changes" is code for pro-abortion, gay marrages . . all things that would make secular socialists very happy. There were high expectations for Sen. Ted Cruz´s keynote address at CPAC 2013, and he delivered. As a young, passionate Hispanic who happens to be one of the most brilliant and accomplished constitutional experts and Supreme Court lawyers in the U.S. Senate in over half a century, Cruz poses a clear frustration for the left—and some in the Republican establishment as well. Cruz was a rock star at the Conservative Political Action Conference. Whenever anyone mentioned him in their remarks, the utterance was met with applause.

On Wednesday night, Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) electrified the crowd at the Coalitions for America’s Weyrich Awards Dinner, named after founder Paul Weyrich. He led off his speech with a dismissive reference to Senator John McCain’s characterization of him as a “wacko bird.” Looking at the crowd, Cruz said, “Birds of a feather flock together.” Cruz led off with a full-on critique of the President’s public relations blitz over sequestration. “2.4 percent cuts were made from your meals,” he joked. He referenced the “emaciated face” of conservative megadonor Foster Friess.

Lee was the first of Paul’s Republican colleagues to formally join the filibuster, providing some relief by delivering a speech in support. Senator Ted Cruz of Texas would soon follow, bearing news of the tremendous outpouring of public support on social media

Imagine you´re a waitress, out with friends on a night off, when you lose your wallet. Cash, credit cards, driver´s license—all gone. Your bank later informs you that checks are being issued in your name. It´s a pain, but you carry on. Two weeks later, you´re at work when four people walk in and sit in your section. They start ordering drinks. You ask to see their IDs. A woman in the group hands a driver´s license to you. You look down, and it´s yours.

A very courageous fifth-grade teacher in the Chicago Public Schools has written a scathing critique of the almost comical misery she and her students endured when they participated in a massive February 28 event kicking off Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! Active Schools campaign. The First Lady’s campaign is an effort to improve (and in some cases, bring back) physical education in American schools. White House officials called the event “a groundbreaking, earth-shattering, awesomely-inspiring day.” Lisa Putnam and her fifth grades most certainly did not experience the event the same way, however.

To read most conservative websites you´d have to believe that Hollywood is the holy mecca of liberal hypocrisy, a swarming hive of limousine liberals, and the indulgence capital of the world. And I do happen to believe the truth of that, an assessment arrived at decades ago and acted upon by my absolute absence in movie theaters for those same decades. For conservatives, going to the movies long ago became a form of self-flagellation where one pays exorbitant prices for admission and confections

HOUSTON -- It was a moment weeks in the making: 93-year-old Elbert Wood returned to his home that was rebuilt through the kindness of strangers. “This is purely community effort, from the new grass to the new roof,” radio host Michael Berry told the crowd that gathered in northwest Houston. They offered up a hero’s welcome for Wood, a decorated World War II veteran. President Obama must have been stunned at the "audacity" of Dr. Benjamin Carson in challenging his core assumptions right to his face in front of thousands of people at the National Prayer Breakfast. Obama is not used to being challenged, especially in public, even if indirectly and without being specifically named. From the look on his face, it was obvious Obama was none too pleased with Carson´s message or with his "presumptuousness" in presenting it in that forum, while he had to sit still and -- remain silent.

Recent research indicates that the number of people who do not consider themselves a part of an organized religion is steadily on the rise. Interestingly enough, though the number of those religiously unaffiliated is increasing, there is little to no trend in the number of those who express atheist or agnostic beliefs. People aren’t saying they don’t believe in God. They’re saying they don’t believe in religion. They are not rejecting Christ. They are rejecting the church. This begs the question, “Why are we losing our religion?”

Beginning a week of high pressure on gun control, the White House on Monday accused some Republican senators of cowardice for planning to filibuster gun legislation without allowing the full Senate to vote on President Obama’s initiatives. “If they oppose this legislation, have the courage to say so on the floor and vote no,” said White House press secretary Jay Carney. “Don’t block it. Don’t hide behind a procedural action to prevent a vote. That’s the wrong thing to do, and that’s how the president clearly feels.”

However, any deal could be derailed by the looming threat of a Republican filibuster involving Texas Sen. Ted Cruz. With Cruz standing proudly in the way of any gun legislation, Democrats are trying to make him pay a political price — and even a couple of high-profile Republicans are questioning his tactics.
