Profile: New pope, Jesuit Bergoglio,
was runner-up in 2005 conclave

National Catholic Reporter, by John L. Allen Jr.

Original Article

Posted By:Drive, 3/14/2013 7:49:04 AM

While there are still no tracking polls to establish who´s got legs as a papal candidate, the 2013 conclave at least has one objective measure not available in 2005: past performance. Many of the cardinals seen as candidates now were also on offer the last time around, and someone who had traction eight years ago could be a contender again. By that measure alone, Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Buenos Aires, Argentina, at least merits a look.

My question is this: since it is coming out now that he was the "runner-up" in the 2005 conclave, how come he was not mentioned as one of the front-runners by any of the news reports before the conclave convened?

When 2/3 vote is required, how is "runner-up" calculated?

The National Catholic Reporter is almost as bad as the New York Times.

The National Catholic Register is trustworthy.

IRS official apologizes to tea

An IRS official apologized on Friday to tea party organizations and other conservative groups for inappropriately targeting them during the 2012 election, the Associated Press reports. The groups, which enjoyed tax-exempt status under the internal revenue code, were singled out for additional scrutiny of their tax exemption if their names included the words "tea party" or "patriot." In several cases, the groups were asked to provide a list of donors for review, usually a violation of IRS policy. "That was wrong. That was absolutely incorrect, it was insensitive

Acting with a stunning degree of cyber-skill and tremendously precise coordination, a network of thieves stole $45 million from ATM machines in 26 countries in two global ripoffs, federal authorities said Thursday. The breathtaking computer-based capers included $2.8 million in funds stolen with ease from cash machines in New York City, marking the biggest cash theft in the city since the infamous $5 million Lufthansa heist at Kennedy Airport in 1978. The money came from information stolen from databases of prepaid debit cards that was then

How Stephen Hawking Abandoned

Has Stephen Hawking really left the company of Albert Einstein, an avowed Zionist who worked to create the State of Israel, and replaced him with the august company of Elvis Costello and other Israel boycotters? In 1998, I hosted Hawking for a lecture at Oxford, where I introduced him to 1,000 students. He could not have been more humble and approachable. Aside from his lecture, delivered through his voice synthesizer, on string theory — little of which I understood but which my students assured me was “brilliant” — I remember his love of babies and practical jokes.

The Benghazi Scandal Grows
Commentary Magazine, by Peter Wehner    Original Article

National Journal’s Michael Hirsh, in writing about the House hearings on the September 11, 2012 attacks on the American consulate in Benghazi, said, “Benghazi was a tragedy. It will, almost certainly, remain a political issue. What it is not – by a long shot — is a scandal yet.” To understand why this judgment is wrong, it’s helpful to keep in mind that weeks after the attack the Obama administration claimed the cause of the violence was a spontaneous demonstration, not pre-planned attacks; that the cause of the demonstrations was an anti-Muslim YouTube video; and that there was no terrorist involvement in the attacks.

House Republicans Call on

House Republicans on Thursday called on the Obama administration to release a new batch of e-mails that they believe will shed more light on how the White House and the State Department responded in the days after the attacks on American facilities in Benghazi, Libya. Speaker John A. Boehner, in a written statement, made the request, saying, “The truth shouldn’t be hidden from the American people behind a White House firewall.” His move was the first of many expected by Republicans in the coming days and weeks to try to force the White House to divulge more documents and allow additional witnesses to testify.

Hezbollah chief: Syria

BEIRUT — Syria will supply “game-changing” weapons to Hezbollah, the chief of the Lebanese militia said Thursday, just days after Israeli airstrikes on Damascus targeted what Israel said were shipments of advanced Iranian weapons possibly bound for the group. Any attempts to ship advanced Iranian missiles across Syria to Hezbollah in Lebanon would likely draw a new Israeli response, and Thursday’s warning by Hezbollah chief Sheik Hassan Nasrallah, if more than rhetoric, could signal a further escalation. Israel has largely tried to stay out of Syria’s 26-month-old conflict.

Three State Department whistleblowers’ congressional testimony was nearly forgotten yesterday amid the lies and half-truths coming out of the White House and its congressional cohorts. If White House press secretary Jay Carney were spinning any faster, he’d be mistaken for an Iranian uranium-enrichment centrifuge. The testimony proved a host of things, some redundantly. The first is that when UN Ambassador Susan Rice went on five Sunday talk shows — five days after the incident — the Obama administration had to know she was lying when she blamed the Benghazi attack on an anti-Muslim video. How do we know?

Voters would feel they had regained control over their own destiny if Britain became fully independent from Brussels, the Mayor of London said. Mr Johnson warned that the country must be ready to "walk away" from Europe if David Cameron failed to negotiate better terms of membership. Mr Johnson´s comments will fuel the increasingly fevered debate inside the Conservative Party about European policy, which has flared after the success of Ukip in last week´s local elections. The Mayor´s intervention, at a conference of international business leaders in London, followed an attack from the Prime Minister on

Why Benghazi is a Blow
to Obama and Clinton
National Journal, by Ron Fournier    Original Article

Both parties are wrong about Benghazi. Existing evidence does not point to a far-reaching cover-up on the scale of Watergate, as Republicans want you to believe. But it is not, as the White House claims, nothing. The administration’s response to the Sept. 11, 2012, attack on U.S. installations in eastern Libya was inaccurate, irresponsible and shrouded by campaign-style spin. It belied President Obama’s oft-broken promise to run a transparent government. If nothing else, Benghazi is a blow to the credibility of the president and his potential successor, then-Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton. This could be big.

Sen. Tom Coburn (R., Okla.) told “Morning Joe” Thursday the State Department “has real trouble” on its hands and that in his seat on the Senate Intelligence Committee he noticed a glaring omission in its submitting of information that will eventually come to light. He could not elaborate on what the omission was, but said he noticed it in his review of emails that went back and forth surrounding Benghazi. JOE SCARBOROUGH: Obviously on the Hill, a lot of people talking about the Benghazi hearings yesterday. What’s your take on what you learned from the State Department officials?

Paper Tiger definition: n, nation, etc., that has the appearance of power but is actually weak and ineffectual. That description perfectly describes our country today. Global chaos reigns today, Nations are crumbling, others are going bankrupt, radical Islamists are waging deadly battles and instead of facing these dire developments, this administration, that represents the world´s remaining super power, blusters and throws out empty threats to hostile forces. It first establishes a red line that Syria must cross before we take action and when that line was crossed, it simply redefined the red line.

The social media and pundit consensus after Sanford won his old South Carolina congressional district over Democrat Elizabeth Colbert Busch was that there was no politician who could be more grateful for the outcome than Weiner, the former congressman who resigned amid scandal and who’s eying a comeback of his own.

As a presidential speech writer for the first Bush White House, I am always very interested in what presidents say in their formal speeches. They know, of course, that their remarks will be widely covered by the press, studied by analysts, and influential in contemporary political debates. For that reason, presidents rarely speak off-the-cuff, and their every word is carefully chosen for exactly the message the White House wants to convey to the public. Their graduation speeches, like all presidential addresses, go through many drafts and are reviewed by high-level administration officials

Northwestern University continued to stumble over diversity issues this week as Mexican students voiced disagreement with a campuswide letter that advised students not to celebrate Cinco de Mayo by engaging in racially-offensive activities, such as eating tacos and drinking tequila. The letter was sent to students via e-mail, and published in The Daily Northwestern last week. Leaders of Alianza, a Latino student group, and the Associated Student Government called on students to remember that Cinco de Mayo commemorates Mexico’s victory over France in the Battle of Puebla. It is not a day to throw a sombrero-themed party, they said.

When it became clear last fall that the CIA’s now discredited Benghazi talking points were flawed, the White House said repeatedly the document were put together almost entirely by the intelligence community, but White House documents reviewed by Congress suggest a different story. ABC News has obtained 12 different versions of the talking points that show they were extensive edited as they evolved from the drafts first written entirely by the CIA to the final version distributed to Congress and to U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Susan Rice before she appeared on five talk shows the Sunday after that attack.

She weathered Whitewater. She made it past Monica ?Lewinsky. Now Hillary Clinton is hoping to beat the rap on Benghazi and make it to the White House. The Clinton political machine is in full campaign mode already, preparing for 2016 and hoping voters forget by then that she had a key role in the Obama administration’s handling of the terror attack. But that’s becoming more difficult as the GOP appears to be laying the groundwork for tying Clinton to Benghazi and making sure it stays front and center in the next campaign. Some of the testimony from State Department whistleblowers

Fans of Glenn Beck are complaining about what I wrote yesterday about his speech at the National Rifle Association convention, where he used a giant image of Michael Bloomberg photoshopped into what appeared to be an image of Hitler with his arm raised in a Nazi salute and wearing an armband. The Beck crowd now tells me that it wasn’t Hitler’s picture into which the New York mayor was transposed but that of Communist leader Vladimir Lenin. They say that means I owe Beck an apology along with the Anti-Defamation League and others who were also outraged by it.

John McCain is going to release a bill that would dismantle cable as it´s currently constructed, Brenden Sasso at The Hill reports. The legislation would force cable companies and satellite TV providers to give consumers an option to pick and choose which channels they get. This is called "à la carte programming," and it´s long been a dream of consumers who only want a handful of channels. McCain tried to introduce similar legislation in 2006 and it went nowhere.

Congressman Frank Wolf of Virginia has written House Speaker John Boehner, requesting the creation of a bipartisan Select Committee to investigate the Benghazi terror debacle. It is an excellent idea. A Select Committee is the only means available now for the U.S. political system to extricate itself from the labyrinth called Benghazi. There have been two fulcrum events in the accounting of what happened in Benghazi. The first was U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice´s September 16 declarations on TV that Benghazi was part of the Islamic world´s violent, spontaneous reaction to the incendiary California YouTube video.

A new deadly “sex superbug” has been found in two individuals in Hawaii, after surfacing in Japan in 2011. H041, a form of gonorrhea that is resistant to all antibiotics presently available, is considered as deadly as AIDS, and is much faster at killing people. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention wants upward of $50 million from Congress to find an antibiotic that will kill the virus, which has also been found in California and Norway.
