Harris County added more residents than any other county in the United States for the second year in a row, the Census Bureau reported Thursday, as thousands of people drawn by job opportunities flocked to the Houston area. Between July 1, 2011, and July 1, 2012, Harris County grew by about 80,000 people to more than 4.2 million. In the same time period, the Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land metropolitan area increased by 125,185 residents to about 6.1 million, second in the nation behind the Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington metro area, which grew by 131,879 people.

But is the infrastructure keeping up? I though Houston had nightmarish traffic 20 years ago.

We now have tollways that are helping to pay for tollways across our State. I do not like it, but the tollway is the fastest way for me to get to work (20 minutes vs 45 minutes).

And the tollway added to the middle of I-10 made that major freeway expansion job last 6 years, instead of the typical 12 years for a federally funded project.

Traffic was tolerable last year but it has increased in the last several months. What worries me are all the California license plates.

WASHINGTON — Climate change is already hurting American farmers and rural residents, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said today, warning that the U.S. would regret any failure to adapt and prepare for shifting weather realities. Unveiling a new effort to coordinate the government’s response, Vilsack said extreme weather events have already taken the U.S. by surprise, putting ranchers and others out of business. He pointed to the intensity and frequency of recent storms, long droughts, snowstorms and subzero weather as evidence that climate change is no longer hypothetical or in the future.“The combination of all those factors convinces me that the

President Barack Obama rallied Senate Democrats behind his election-year agenda on Wednesday, even privately urging senators to “keep your powder dry” on his push to expand international trade despite the strong opposition from many leading Democrats, according to several people at the closed-door session. At a roughly two-hour meeting at Nationals Park, Obama repeatedly emphasized his goal to keep the Senate in Democratic control in the 2014 midterms, promising to do whatever he can to help his party stay in the majority, attendees said. He noted that his agenda stands a better chance of advancing if a majority of the

America long ago lost her will to live. Historically, trespassing into another people´s territory could bring violence. And nations the world over secure their borders, sometimes at the end of a gun fondled by an itchy finger. But not the US. We place water stations in the Arizona desert for thirsty trespassers, offer driver´s licenses and in-state tuition for them, and now a Supreme Court justice has opined that calling illegal migrants "criminals" is insulting. I don´t know, what do you call someone who broke the law? "Legally challenged"? But it´s even worse than that. About 20 years ago Japan

Hagel has been worried by a string of scandals that has produced a wave of unwelcome publicity for the military. The Congressional Budget Office estimated on Tuesday that the Affordable Care Act will reduce the number of full-time workers by 2.5 million over the next decade. That is mostly a good thing, a liberating result of the law. Of course, Republicans immediately tried to brand the findings as “devastating” and stark evidence of President Obama’s health care reform as a failure and a job killer. It is no such thing. (SNIP) The new law will free people, young and old, to pursue careers or retirement without having to worry about health coverage.

The Affordable Care Act, aka ObamaCare, became law almost four years ago. It became operational last Oct. 1. Yesterday, Feb. 4, 2014, the ACA may well have been dealt its death blow. The Congressional Budget Office released a major study of the government’s budget and its effect on the overall economy over the next 10 years. In dull bureaucratic language, it delivers a devastating analysis of the inefficiencies, ineffectualities and problematic social costs of ObamaCare. The one-two punch: Virtually as many Americans will lack health coverage in 10 years as before the law was passed — but 2 million fewer

President Obama, outlining his push Tuesday to bring high-speed Internet access to more U.S. schools, said Americans should demand the same level of technology in learning facilities as they do in coffee shops. “In a country where we expect free Wi-Fi with our coffee, we should definitely demand it in our schools,” Obama said in Adelphi, Md., highlighting $750 million in new commitments from private companies to put digital learning labs in schools. Under his plan, the Federal Communications Commission will also spend $2 billion to connect 20 million students to wireless technologies.
