| Latin America´s first pope, Jorge Mario Bergoglio, will be known as Francis, rather than Francis I, until such time as a future pope chooses the same name. "Cardinalem Bergoglio qui sibi nomen imposuit Franciscum," the Vatican´s proto-deacon said as he presented the new leader of the world´s 1.2 billion Catholics to the world on Wednesday, crucially without adding the world "Primum" (the first). He will remain a plain Francis until a successor calls himself Francis II, if any should choose to do so, at which point he will go down in history as Francis I.

It is a little confusing because John Paul I specifically called himself "I" when asked what name he would take, and he was just as specifically announced as "Joannem Paulum Primum."

Over-joyed! Was watching EWTN all day, and I loved the joke Fr. Mitch Pacwa, S.J. told. "There are three things that only God knows. How much money is in the Catholic Church, how many orders of Franciscans there really are, and what´s really on a Jesuit´s mind." Of course, the fact that there were two Franciscans on the set with him made it even funnier. I love Jesuit jokes. And in the event that Ldotters may think that I´m anti Jesuit, may I point out my Ldotter name is JHSMom...Jesuit High School. And yes, I´m aware of the reputation, in so cases justified, that the Jesuits are liberal. Not all of them are.

Was watching all day and evening too! Also heard Fr. Pacwa joking....just love him and all of EWTN coverage. Its so much more informative than the secular media. Had to contact by email our previous pastor who was assigned a new parish. He said in his lifetime , he would never see a fellow Jesuit rise to the level of pope. I told him he is very much alive, and now we can savor a traditional Jesuit that dear St. Francis Xavier(Jesuit) and St. Francis of Assisi will inspire!!

Williamson, W.Va.- The man suspected of killing a West Virginia sheriff as he ate lunch in his car was mentally disturbed and had no particular vendetta with law enforcement, his father told The Associated Press on Thursday. Melvin Maynard said his 37-year-old son, Tennis Melvin Maynard, was exposed to harmful chemicals and injured while working at an Alabama coal mine. He most likely did not target Mingo County Sheriff Eugene Crum, he said. "He would have probably shot anybody, the first one he come to, you know what I´m saying?" the elder Maynard said. Recent research indicates that the number of people who do not consider themselves a part of an organized religion is steadily on the rise. Interestingly enough, though the number of those religiously unaffiliated is increasing, there is little to no trend in the number of those who express atheist or agnostic beliefs. People aren’t saying they don’t believe in God. They’re saying they don’t believe in religion. They are not rejecting Christ. They are rejecting the church.
