| VATICAN CITY -- Argentine Jorge Bergoglio has been elected pope, the first ever from the Americas and the first from outside Europe in more than a millennium. He chose the name Pope Francis. After announcing "´Habemus Papum" - "´We have a pope!" - a cardinal standing on the balcony of St. Peter´s Basilica on Wednesday revealed the identity of the new pontiff, using his Latin name. Bergoglio had reportedly finished second in the 2005 conclave that produced Benedict XVI - who last month became the first pope to resign in 600 years.

Somewhat of a surprise but an excellent choice; very conservative, and he probably won´t be pope for too many years, giving young cardinals like Tagle and Dolan time to get old enough to be more seriously considered. Very humble man, and will be loved by all true Catholics. The cafeteria ones will, happily, be disappointed.

He is very orthodox, so the MSM will hate him. He has a reputation as a holy, humble man and he is an intellectual. He is the first Jesuit pope, the first pope from the Americas and he is the first Francis. There were two great Jesuit saints named Francis - Francis Xavier the missionary and Francis Borgia (the only good Borgia) who gave up a noble title to join the Jesuits.

Well, he sounds like a fine man. I´m not RC, either, but my heart is happy with this selection. I am thrilled with the name Francis. It´s one of my all-time favorite names (men and women [Frances]), and maybe this will bring it back into fashion. Also, a great name history-wise.
Perhaps God is not finished with this world yet. ;)

Evem more than his predecessor’s, this Pope seems an unlikely fit for Paul Ryan-style Catholics:
Bergoglio has supported the social justice ethos of Latin American Catholicism, including a robust defense of the poor. “We live in the most unequal part of the world, which has grown the most yet reduced misery the least,” Bergoglio said during a gathering of Latin American bishops in 2007. “The unjust distribution of goods persists, creating a situation of social sin that cries out to Heaven and limits the possibilities of a fuller life for so many of our brothers.” Sounds like a socialist.

Our family will pray for Pope Francis as he begins his papal duties in shepherding the Church.

#11, the Church has always cared for the poor. True social justice is the calling of the church, I hate that the left and liberals have coopted the phrase to mean the government should be the main caregiver of the poor.

#8 makes a very good point. The EWTN commentators pointed out that there were two very significant Franises in history, and that which were the real namesake -- and he might even want to honor both.
But the conventional media have already decided for him, as their typically-superficial "knowledge" only puts Assisi on their screens.
If you get EWTN on cable, check them for a recap tonight. Even their camera work and locations were better.

His being a Jesuit, it´s St. Francis Xavier who is the Francis that Bergoglio has chosen to follow. An interesting choice by the Carinals for the 266th Pope: an Argentine, Argentina with its Liberation Theology, a dirt-poor but children rich laity, no stories of pedophile priests or bishops hiding financial shenanigans or rampant clericalism; all in all a clean slate behind which to hide and thereby hopefully silence the allegations against "The Sins of The Fathers". In your search for renewed holiness within the RCC, Pope Francis, please don´t forget Truth among your alleged gifts of Justice, Compassion and Peace.

#24: First, thanks. I often hear Arroyo with Laura, and he does good work there. I did not know of n with EWTN. Thanks for that info, too.
#25: Probably so, but to assume so just from Bergoglio being a Jesuit is an assertion, not a proof. Thanks. I´ll wait for a direct statement. As I said in #20, he may even be intending to recognize both. But having no direct evidence, I won´t propose he´s recognizing either or both.

That same day, Bishop Tobin, who represents 680,000 Catholics in 143 parishes, issued a pastoral letter to Catholics on the approval of “same-sex marriage.”

When President Dwight Eisenhower — a big-government Republican running for re-election — signed the federal disability program into law in 1956, he suggested this new form of welfare would increase government efficiency, rehabilitate the truly disabled and roll back government dependency. "The law initiates new programs of grants to train more skilled social workers and to support research in ways of helping people overcome dependency," Eisenhower said. "We will, of course, endeavor to administer the disability provisions efficiently and effectively, in cooperation with the states," he said.

A 1985 law governing sequestration has kicked in and reduced the automatic $85 billion budget cuts by about $4.9 billion, or six percent. The bulk of the refund ($4.4 billion) is going to the departments of Defense ($3.7 billion) and State ($700 million), while the rest is spread out over a variety of other agencies. The $4.9 billion correction is based on the full-year spending bill Congress recently passed. It reduces the sequestration budget cuts by about six percent. Speaking to "The Right Views" on background, an administration official explained the $4.9 billion reversal:

Paris/Dubai - Boeing has shown airlines a blueprint for the world´s longest-range passenger jet, adding spice to a long-awaited revamp of its 777 wide-body jet, people familiar with the matter said. Boeing on Wednesday launched a race against Airbus for sales of the newest long-haul jets by announcing it had begun selling an upgraded aircraft family code-named 777X. First seen in the 1990s, the 777 cornered the market for large twin-engine aircraft able to fly routes previously only possible with four engines, earning it the nickname "mini-jumbo." Analysts say the 777 is Boeing´s most profitable plane, thanks largely to the 777-300ER,

The 21st century is a hard sell to a culture that prefers the 8th. The Europeans, loosely defined, keep trying in Afghanistan. It’s 12 years and counting since the Americans replaced the Russians, and a lot longer than that since the British decided they had had enough, and beat it back to London. We’ve made a considerable investment in blood and money in Afghanistan. The changes that all the sacrifice bought are mostly cosmetic, and we’re learning that cosmetic changes last about as long on an 8th-century culture as lipstick on a pig.

When it first became clear that the CIA’s Benghazi talking points had been altered, many of us viewed the White House as the prime suspect. After all, it served President Obama’s political purposes to claim, at the height of a political campaign in which he was taking credit for the fall of al Qaeda, that the death of a U.S. ambassador was down to spontaneous outrage over a video, rather than pre-planned terrorism. It turns out, however, that the State Department was the prime culprit. It was State that pushed back hard against the original talking points.

Republican lawmakers, who have spent months seeking to tie President Obama to last year’s deadly attack on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, are increasingly focusing their probe on a new target: former secretary of state Hillary Rodham Clinton. The GOP-led investigation of the Sept. 11, 2012, assaults that killed U.S. Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens and three others now centers heavily on the State Department and whether officials there deliberately misled the public about the nature of the assault. Three State Department officials are scheduled to testify before a House committee on Wednesday about the Benghazi attack and its aftermath.

Sanford defeated Colbert Busch 54 percent to 45 percent, according to full unofficial results. Turnout was heavier than expected, with about 32 percent of the district’s 455,702 registered voters casting ballots. Sanford, who has never lost an election, returns to the 1st District seat he held for three terms from 1995-2001. There was tragic incompetence, plainly, in the Obama administration’s handling of the Benghazi attacks, and even possibly some political calculation. It is a record that may well come to haunt Hillary Clinton, the first Secretary of State to lose an ambassador in the field in more than three decades, if she runs for president in 2016. But the obvious Republican effort to turn this inquiry into the Democratic (Obama) version of the Iraq intelligence scandal that has tarred the GOP since the George W. The AP called the race for Sanford early in the evening, with the Republican leading Colbert Busch 54 percent 46 percent.
