DETROIT- Former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, once seen as a rising star in Democratic Party politics, was convicted on Monday on two dozen federal charges of corruption and bribery during his seven year tenure. Prosecutors accused Kilpatrick, 42, his father and a city contractor of widespread corruption, extorting bribes from contractors who wanted to be awarded or keep city contracts, turning the mayor´s office into "Kilpatrick Incorporated" from 2001 until he resigned in 2008. Many people in Detroit believe Kilpatrick contributed to the decline of the city, home of the auto industry.
We had just moved to Michigan in 1966. At that time Detroit still seemed viable, despite the 1967 riots. Jerome Cavanagh (Democrat) was the young mayor then and seemed to have the ability to turn the racial problem around. He was succeeded by former Wayne County Sheriff Roman Gibbs (Democrat) who also seemed competent - he later became a judge on the Michigan Court of Appeals. Both Cavanagh and Gibbs were the last white mayors.
Gibbs was succeeded by Coleman A. Young who served for 20 years. From 1974 on when Young was sworn in, it was downhill all the way for Detroit. Young was succeeded by Dennis Archer, a law professor and served on the Michigan Supreme Court until he was elected mayor. Archer needed a competent city council and other city leaders, but it was too late by then.
Kwame Kilpatrick who succeed Archer is a bad joke. I do feel sorry, though, for Dave Bing (former Detroit Piston basketball star), the current mayor. There´s nothing much he can do.
Between the unions (teacher´s union in particular), the city unions, and the incompetency of the city leaders, and the "flight" out of the city by professionals, Detroit couldn´t overcome it all.
Once a corrupt politician figures he can write checks for himself, hide from the taxpayer without accountability, and scream "racism" when shortcomings are pointed out...well...it´s a downhill ride from there! Too bad. Detroit was once a beautiful city to visit.
Young is the one that should be blamed for wrecking Detroit. He was a typical Dem, corrupt to the core, but inept as well as incompetent. All he wanted to do was stick it to whitey. I don´t think Detroit can be saved, but there are those that do. We shall see.
An explosion of violence in Iraq risks turning the troubled country into a political liability for President Obama. During last year´s reelection campaign, the president managed to both earn credit for withdrawing all U.S. troops and avoid blame for the deteriorating security situation. But a surge in terror attacks this year that has left more than 7,000 people dead has drawn bipartisan concerns about Obama´s Middle East policies -- concerns that broke out into the open during Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki´s visit to the White House this week. “By nearly every indicator, security conditions in Iraq have dramatically worsened over
Senior White House Advisor Dan Pfeiffer responded on Sunday to growing frustration with President Barack Obama’s inaccurate promise that individuals would be able to stay on their healthcare plans once his signature legislation was implemented. “If the president didn’t intend to keep this promise, why would he have gone out of his way to put a provision in the law specifically says that if you have a plan before Obamacare passed you can keep that plan?” Pfeiffer asked on ABC’s This Week. “It’s important to understand who we’re talking about and the kind of plans we’re talking about.
Upon her last season on the popular daytime talk show The View, Barbara Walters spoke to Media Buzz’s Howard Kurtz about her wide-ranging career as a news and entertainment anchor, the changes to TV-based journalism, and how The View created a new format for television discussion, especially for both female voices and female viewers. Kurtz asked Walters why a show like The View, which has never shied away from political topics in the past, ignored the government shutdown and the drama over Obamacare. “The View is not Meet the Press,” Walters said. “A lot of people do get
This morning on "This Week," Crossfire co-host Van Jones, a former Obama administration official, said the president would "pay a price," for reversing course on his now famous promise that those Americans who like their plans could keep them if them if they wished under Obamacare.""And he overpromised. And he will, listen, he will pay a price. ´Mission accomplished,´ you pay a price. ´No new taxes,´ you pay a price. ´You keep your plan,´ you pay a price," Jones said. During his appearance on the "This Week," roundtable Jones also tweaked the Obama administration for being too ambitious
PATERSON, N.J.- Sen. Barbara Buono is rallying her base in the heavily Democratic city of Paterson. The gubernatorial challenger staged a unity rally Sunday with more than 300 supporters. Buono is campaigning without help from any big-name Democrats as she winds up her race against Gov. Chris Christie. The Republican incumbent is all but assured of re-election. Earlier Sunday, Christie had touted his relationship with President Obama while campaigning in Jackson. The governor said he has a "good working relationship" with the president. But Christie says he´s willing to criticize Obama if he´s
The Washington Post´s Bob Woodward made a spectacularly delicious comment to MSNBC´s David Axelrod on NBC´s Meet the Press Sunday. After President Obama´s former senior advisor claimed that the administration in 2012 "tested everything" concerning how they could defeat a Republican challenger including polling how an Obama/Clinton ticket would look if Hillary replaced Joe Biden, Woodward said, "Everything but ObamaCare" DAVID GREGORY, HOST: I want to switch a little bit and talk about politics here, and the book "Double Down: Game Change 2012."
U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz is accusing critics of smear tactics after they attacked his father for saying President Obama should go "back to Chicago, back to Kenya" at an event last year. Even as he dismissed his father’s comments as a “joke” and ill-advised, he said critics were motivated as much by politics as by genuine outrage. Speaking to CNN affiliate WFAA on Friday, the first-term Republican senator from Texas said, "sadly, those who are trying to play the politics of personal destruction are trying to smear him and use that to attack me. That´s a shame." "I love my father," said Cruz. "He is a pastor.
Despite the low turnout typical in Virginia’s non-presidential election years, statewide races for governor, lieutenant governor and attorney general have a greater impact on how the state will run than perhaps any other contests in the four-year election cycle. With so much at stake — such as potential Medicaid expansion, tax and abortion policies, and control of the state Senate — this year’s contests offer some of the greatest contrasts and potential consequences of any in recent memory. “I do think the choice in this election is as stark as I’ve seen it in any race in Virginia,” said U.S.
It really is hysterical listening to liberal Hollywoodans talk about politics. Take for example actor/director Rob Reiner - made famous by his role as Meathead in the legendary sitcom All in the Family - claiming on HBO´s Real Time Friday ("Overtime" web segment) that Barack Obama politically "is right around where Reagan was": BILL MAHER, HOST: I’m just saying the Democrats have moved to the middle. CONGRESSWOMAN DEBBIE WASSERMAN-SCHULTZ (D-FLORIDA): We have. MAHER: Unfortunately, the other people have moved way over there. So now the
Fascinating new insights from the 2012 presidential campaign have come out ahead of the Nov. 5 release of the new book "Double Down: Game Change 2012," but a detail about Chinese hackers targeting Mitt Romney has us asking even more questions. At Time Magazine´s Swampland blog, authors Mark Halperin and John Heilemann provide an excerpt from the book that details Romney´s search for a vice presidential running mate. His longtime adviser Beth Myers is told to make sure the #2 is Commander-in-Chief quality and there´s nothing in the background that would hurt the campaign.
CAIRO -U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry on Sunday tried to reassure America´s Arab friends that the United States will not allow them to be attacked "from outside," in an apparent warning to Iran. He specifically mentioned Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Jordan and Egypt as nations, alongside unspecified "others," that the U.S. will defend. Those others likely would include Israel, the strongest U.S. ally in the region. "The United States will be there for the defense of our friends and our allies," Kerry told reporters in Cairo. "We will not allow those countries to be attacked from
“We the [Conservative] People” can restore our government by first reclaiming the Republican Party. Not hard. Here’s how. It’s been five years since the American people elected President Obama and we’re almost a year into his disastrous second term. On every issue, President Obama seems to choose the option that is the worst one for Americans. Want to do something about it? If I provided you with a strategy and plan that only took a couple of hours of your time every month and then three or four hours at primary and general election times, and that guaranteed increased voter
I´m reading a terribly sad book these days. It´s a book that I thought would uplift me during the doldrums of second-year medical school, and renew in me a sense of hope. It´s called "The Audacity to Win," and it´s a memoir of Barack Obama´s 2008 presidential campaign. When I´m finished with my patient write-ups at night and get into bed, the book returns me to a time when politics inspired millions and speeches could take your breath away. The election turned out to be a landslide, and news anchors paused to reflect on the historic nature of the hour. My classmates
How Americans see President Obama changed in an important way this week. It’s because there is a huge difference between lies and bulls – - t. Obama says a lot of things that are not true, even nonsensical. But it’s easy to shrug off most of these, because they aren’t really lies. They’re just bulls – - t. Bulls – - t is airy, meaningless drivel, the stuff that campaigns are made of. Or it’s a misleading oversimplification with hidden qualifiers. Not only do we forgive bulls – - t, we like it. Especially suckers who have far too high an opinion
President Obama used his executive powers on Friday to create a ´Task Force on Climate Preparedness and Resilience.´ Obama´s plan would be put in place through executive order, bypassing Congress, which has stalemated over climate legislation in recent years. A year after Superstorm Sandy devastated the East Coast, the President signed the order which is designed to make it easier for states and local governments to respond to weather disasters. The executive order establishes a task force of state and local officials to advise the administration on how to respond to severe storms, wildfires, droughts and other potential impacts of
In May 2010, two months after the Affordable Care Act squeaked through Congress, President Obama’s top economic aides were getting worried. Larry Summers, director of the White House’s National Economic Council, and Peter Orzag, head of the Office of Management and Budget, had just received a pointed four-page memo from a trusted outside health adviser. It warned that no one in the administration was “up to the task” of overseeing the construction of an insurance exchange and other intricacies of translating the 2,000-page statute into reality. Summers, Orzag and their staffs agreed. For weeks that spring, a tug of war
As one of the surviving members of the staff of the Warren Commission, which investigated and issued a report on the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, I am not looking forward to the coming weeks: Nov. 22 will mark the 50th anniversary of Kennedy’s death, and that means a new round of demonizing the Warren Commission and celebrating fallacious conspiracy theories. After Chief Justice Earl Warren hired me to work for the commission, he told me that “truth was our only client.” Throughout the inquiry, that phrase remained our guiding principle. The evidence that Lee Harvey Oswald killed the
This will not go over well for the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize winner. According to the new book “Double Down,” in which journalists Mark Halperin and John Heilemann chronicle the 2012 presidential election, President Barack Obama told his aides that he’s “really good at killing people” while discussing drone strikes. Peter Hamby of The Washington Post noted the moment in his review of the book. The reported claim by the commander-in-chief is as indisputable as it is grim. Obama oversaw the 2009 surge in Afghanistan, 145 Predator drone strikes in NATO’s 2011 Libya operations, the May 2011 raid that
The National Republican Senate Committee, the GOP campaign arm responsible for Senate elections, has decided to use its political power to block consulting firm Jamestown Associates from receiving political work from GOP candidates or incumbents. Jamestown´s "sin" is working with the Senate Conservative Fund, an organization that supports conservative candidates for the US Senate. NRSC communications staffer Brad Dayspring, a former spokesman for House Majority Leader Rep. Eric Cantor (R-VA), told The New York Times on Friday, “We’re not going to do
Congressional Republicans have stoked consumer fears and confusion with charges that the health care reform law is causing insurers to cancel existing policies and will force many people to pay substantially higher premiums next year for coverage they don’t want. That, they say, violates President Obama’s pledge that if you like the insurance you have, you can keep it. Mr. Obama clearly misspoke when he said that. By law, insurers cannot continue to sell policies that don’t provide the minimum benefits and consumer protections required as of next year. So they’ve sent cancellation notices to
Why does the Tea Party love Ted Cruz despite his decisive role in the recent partial government shutdown, which many consider a debacle for the GOP? Why aren’t Tea Partiers blaming Cruz for their drop in the polls, as mainstream Republicans are busily doing for their own decline in popularity? A CNN-ORC International survey from shortly after the shutdown ended shows that 56 percent of Americans have an unfavorable view of the Tea Party, while “only 28 percent” see it in a favorable light — the Tea Party’s lowest favorability rating since its emergence in the wake of the 2008
There is widespread fury at the lies which were used to sell ObamaCare, a more than 2,000-page piece of legislation no one read before it was passed, a law opposed by the majority of voters which was crammed down our throats without a single Republican vote. The law essentially was a mishmash blank slate which left it to the administration´s HHS head, Secretary Kathleen Sebelius to write as she pleased and the president to -- by Executive order -- pay off with exemptions and special treatment those cronies and rent seekers not already paid off in the legislative and regulatory
Sonny Bono is still a touchy subject for Cher. During a Facebook Q&A with her fans on Thursday, Oct. 31, the legendary singer answered questions for well over an hour about her professional life, her favorites movies and even about Halloween. But the most shocking answer of all just so happened to be about her late ex-husband. "Hi Cher, if Sonny Bono were still alive today, but you only had a minute to talk to him, what would you say," a fan asked. The response? "How hot is it where you just came from?" Cher, 67, and Bono first met in 1962 and married two years later. The husband-and-wife team
A former top general and current executive at the Family Research Council says members of the military have considered staging a coup d´état against President, but will not because of civilian control of the military. "People I´ve spoken to would like to see the military ´fulfill their constitutional duty and take out the president,´ " retired Army Lt. Gen. William Boykin told World Net Daily, a website best known for pushing Obama "birther" conspiracy theories. "Our Constitution puts a civilian in charge of the military and as a result a coup would not be constitutional. You´re not going to see a
