Del. Holmes Norton: A Shrinking Federal Government is Why There’s Little Private Sector Growth

| Del. Eleanor Norton (D-District of Columbia) says private sector jobs are not showing much growth because the federal government is shrinking. “What is shrinking is not the private sector – it’s hard for them to grow because the public sector, both the state sector and the federal government is shrinking and they are having to grow it all by themselves and that is why we don’t have much growth,” Holmes Norton said. The delegate discussed her economic theory during last Friday’s House Democratic Steering and Policy Committee hearing on "The Impact of Sequestration on Women and Families."

Is demonstrating stupidity becoming a requirement for public service, or just a perk of the position?

No stupid, the Federal Govt. is NOT shrinking it is growing...which leaves few dollars for private sector growth.
Also with the Feds stealing more in taxes no one wants to contribute to the madness by making money from investing in growth of their company.
A typical Democrap, knows nothing, speaks from their posterior and expects everyone to believe them...

An embarrassment and worse. She is not the only one. Only by the willing suspension of disbelief and downright denial of reality is it possible to maintain that people capable of choosing and empowering such representatives are truly capable of self-government. This woman and others like her are luxuries America may not be able to afford much longer. There is a limit to how much foolishness, ignorance, stupidity, corruption and demagoguery the system can absorb and continue to function. It makes some people of both races feel good to pretend that people like Norton are competent and worthy of the trust bestowed upon them by a clueless electorate - but there will come a point at which a boat overloaded with such types will capsize and sink, just the like island of Guam if the load is too great.

This is what progressives believe, that you can´t get along without big government to provide jobs and to give things to people. They deny and ignore all the clear evidence to the contrary.
Unfortunately Madame, the reason the private sector is unable to recover is because of the business hostile climate the progressives have created as well as the increased taxes and the massive regulation burden that has been foisted on the Country by BO and his buddies. It´s all about risk and having BO in office has made it VERY risky to be in business.
Progressives will never get it,OR they know it but also know that if there was no need for big nanny government, there would be no need for progressives.

The western model of "compassionate socialism" riding the horse of "cutthroat capitalism" is in deep trouble today precisely because socialism goes from riding behind the saddle, to riding in the saddle, to spurring the horse and cutting its throat at the same time.

Contrary to other comments, I do believe she is correct. As an example, if we had more Government workers, they could hand out more free stuff, like farm subsidies, and thereby increase the demand for more field hands and the purchase of more farm equipment, thus increasing the need for more tractor salespersons and such. It´s all in one´s perspective as to how politicians think.

The reason that many people elected to Congress are completely ignorant must be that you have to be dumb to run for office. Wonder if the people who voted for her are her mental equivalent. Not to be rude, but this woman is incompetent of holding her position if she thinks the Government is "shrinking". Perhaps she means the individuals are getting smaller because Mrs. Obama is mandating they eat their veggies instead of their fast-food.

I keep telling you guys that the Democrats are just as racist as they have ever been. They just pretend to be all-inclusive. Here is ANOTHER of their "useful idiots" that they promoted and put into power to keep certain people of color down. The Dems choose the dumbest or most corrupt people of color they can find to put into political office to show that they really care about people (but who are also easy to manipulate from above). They also choose, promote and subsidize (pay off) local community "leaders", reverends, and politicians to keep their thumb on the people and ensure they stay ignorant and dependent. They make sure that the intelligent ones who run for office are ridiculed and shunned. They don´t want anyone thinking for themselves. Think this was not intentional? Why would a political party change after hundreds of years of bigotry? They wouldn´t.

The deep oceans have yielded many mysteries that have puzzled people for centuries, from the giant squid to huge jellyfish that look like UFOs. To that list add a fish with totally transparent blood. The Ocellated Ice Fish lives in the freezing waters of the Antarctic Ocean, where it manages to keep its body doing all the things that other fish do, but with blood that is absolutely clear, researchers told AFP on Friday. The reason, say experts at Tokyo Sea Life Park, is that the Ocellated Ice Fish has no haemoglobin, making it unique among vertebrates the world over.

A family´s criticism of inflight entertainment allegedly prompted a United flight to be diverted over "security concerns." In a story published in The Atlantic, one family recounts traveling from Denver to Baltimore with two young sons, ages 4 and 8. During the flight, the PG-13-rated detective film "Alex Cross" was shown on drop-down monitors across the plane. The family worried about their young children seeing inappropriate content in the film. "Alarmed by the opening scenes, we asked two flight attendants if they could turn off the monitor; both claimed it was not possible," the family said, according to The Atlantic.

The cascade of WikiLeaks-style revelations shedding light on the often murky world of offshore tax havens began when Gerard Ryle received a mysterious letter in the post. The experienced investigative journalist had been busy trying to unravel the details of a large financial fraud in his native Australia when the prospect of an even bigger scoop landed on his doormat. The letter contained part of a hard drive with the details of 2.5 million digital files, a treasure trove that would ultimately yield information on 120,000 offshore companies and nearly 130,000 individuals.

It’s an ill wind that blows nobody good, and a pipeline leaking on somebody else’s front yard can be a godsend, too. The environmentalists who were waging a losing war against the proposed Keystone pipeline woke up to the news of a small pipeline leak in Arkansas and thought it was Christmas morning. If environmentalists were the praying kind, they would say the Arkansas leak was an answer to their prayers. They think it ends the debate over the Keystone pipeline. One green lobbyist says “this should be the nail in the coffin of the Keystone pipeline.”

She came to power promising to usher in a new dawn in relations with North Korea. Park Geun-hye, who in February became the first female president of South Korea, was elected on the back of a campaign to establish "trustpolitik" – a break with the previous decades of hostilities, and a new emphasis on cooperation and confidence between the sworn enemies. Yet with the increasingly rabid rhetoric coming from Pyongyang, Ms Park will be considering putting her pacifist pledge aside. The North has dramatically ramped up its usually-bellicose statements, with the general staff of the North´s army warning last night

Germs are perfect machines of evolution. Their ability to mutate and survive attempts (by humans and nature) to destroy them has led to some being called "superbugs." Resistant to existing antibiotics, superbug-related infections worldwide result in thousands of deaths each year—an estimated 99,000 in the U.S. alone for each of the past 10 years. These bacteria not only take a tragic toll on human life but involve major costs. A new study by MPHonline.org reports that superbugs are responsible for $20 billion in excess health care costs in the U.S. annually, as well as $35 billion in lost wages

Kuban, who works at the Library of Congress Packard campus in Culpeper, allegedly posted the ads from his work computer. Authorities say Kuban made several Craigslist postings each week directing men to his ex-girlfriend´s home for sex or to buy pornographic videos.

We all know that guns can cost lives because the media repeat this message endlessly, as if we could not figure it out for ourselves. But even someone who reads newspapers regularly and watches numerous television newscasts may never learn that guns also save lives-- much less see any hard facts comparing how many lives are lost and how many are saved. But that trade-off is the real issue, not the Second Amendment or the National Rifle Association, which so many in the media obsess about.

The Obama administration treated the creation of "democracy" in the Middle East as a Good Thing. Ironically, those who created the United States of America viewed democracy with fear-- and created a Constitutional republic instead. Everything depends on how you define democracy. In its most basic sense, democracy means majority rule. But there can be majority rule in a free country or in a country with an authoritarian or even a dictatorial government. In this age of sloppy uses of words, many people include freedom in their conception of democracy. But whether democracy leads to freedom is an open question,

Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, who emerged as the conservative populist in the 2012 GOP presidential primaries, is already running for the 2016 nomination for president. Santorum, who has been making the rounds at conservative media outlets, this week stepped deeper into the presidential pool when he said that he isn´t "doing anything inconsistent" with a 2016 campaign. While refusing to make a flat commitment to a White House run, he told Newsmax TV that "I´m certainly leaving the door open for that." Santorum added, "I´m making no commitments at this point, but we´re not doing anything inconsistent with running in 2016."

On April 25, President Barack Obama will be united with his four living predecessors in Dallas for the opening of the George W. Bush Presidential Center at Southern Methodist University, officials confirmed Tuesday. According to White House deputy press secretary Josh Earnest, both Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama will be on hand when the 43rd President’s library and museum are dedicated. The last time all five met was in January 2009 before Obama was sworn in, in a meeting and lunch hosted by Bush in the Oval Office for the members of the “world’s most exclusive club.”

President Obama´s biggest gaffe yesterday when speaking of California Attorney General Kamala Harris was not in flirtatiously complimenting her as "the best-looking attorney general," but in introducing an observation from the system of beauty into a forum that was about the system of power. What´s that, you say? Irin Carmon does a great job in Salon in laying out the bounds of propriety for when it´s appropriate to talk about a woman´s looks as a general matter. But I´ve long felt we lack a solid theoretical underpinning for easily discussing these issues, and why precisely it is that

They´re starting to grow out, get a little irritating.´ Still, she hasn´t let her hairdo woes get her down. ´It´s okay,´ she said after her initial complaint. ´We´ll be good.´ The first indication that her hairstyle was becoming a burden came about last weekend, when Malia, 14, was spotted adjusting her mother´s hair during the White House Easter Egg Roll.

To hear some tell it, her decision will be dispositive for all other Democrats thinking of entering the race. Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton explained to the Women in the World summit in New York today that the clock is turning back for women in America. Clinton praised her own mother for helping empower her to success and marveled at the opportunities that her own daughter Chelsea has pursued. But Clinton warned that there is still so much to do to promote women´s rights in America. The Obama White House is scrambling to blame Friday’s abysmal March jobs numbers on the sequester’s trimming of the rate of growth in federal budgets that have yet to fully commence. After the Labor Department announced that a mass exodus of 663,000 workers left the U.S. workforce last month and that job creation fell 112,000 jobs short of projections, Obama’s top economic adviser Alan B. Krueger, took to the White House blog to blame the sequester: It is important to bear in mind that the March household and payroll surveys are the first monthly surveys to look

On Friday, Sean Hannity brought Pat Smith, mother of the late Sean Smith, on his radio program. The 34-year-old information management officer was one of four Americans murdered in the Benghazi embassy attack on September 11, 2012. In the chilling interview, a distraught Ms. Smith, in tears, pleaded for answers and spoke of the efforts to silence her. Put out an all-points bulletin: Millions of Americans have gone missing from the workforce. Every month that those would-be workers are gone raises the odds that they might never come back, dimming the prospects for future economic growth. The vanishing trend is more than a decade old, but it accelerated during the Great Recession. Throughout 2012, economists held out hope that it had stopped. But then came Friday’s jobs report, and hopes were dashed. The Labor Department reported that the U.S. labor force — everyone who has a job or is looking for one — shrank
