The week´s news
Hernando Today/Tampa Tribune, by Len Tria

This past week has been a news filled bonanza of important events. Let me start with the demise of the Dictator of Venezuela, Hugo Chavez, who succumbed to cancer after his extensive treatment in Cuba.(Snip) It is possible that he may yet get the Nobel Peace award posthumously for his nationalizing businesses and bringing 24 percent, or there about, inflation to his country. It is amazing that a country blessed with humongous oil reserves should still have naked poverty and huge unemployment after 14 years of enlightened rulership. One thing he reportedly did do well was to amass a private

chavez and arafat both stole money from their people for their own gain. Both were billionaires while their people lived in squalor. Yet, like our own low info voters, ignorance is bliss when you are basically stupid about reality. And to jessie, sean, jimmy, michael, shame on you. You are the stupidest of all.

I wonder how much the Mooch and Obambi are socking away? They cannot possibly look around at the potentates that populate governments around the world and think that $400,000 a year approaches the level of compensation they deserve. Wannabes are like that.

WASHINGTON—In what was described as a major ramping up of sanctions, Secretary of State John Kerry announced on Tuesday that the United States had frozen Russian President Vladimir Putin’s Netflix account, effective immediately. “Unless and until Mr. Putin calls off the annexation of Crimea, no more ‘House of Cards’ or ‘Orange Is the New Black’ for him,” Mr. Kerry said. “The United States will not stand by and reward the annexation of another sovereign nation with a policy of streaming as usual.” While all of the sanctions Mr. Kerry announced on Tuesday were Netflix-related, he warned Mr. Putin that

On Thursday’s “The O’Reilly Factor” on the Fox News Channel, comedian Dennis Miller ranted against the lawmakers that participated in the so-called “Up4Climate” talk-a-thon that took place on the floor of the U.S. Senate earlier this week to draw attention to global warming. Two ships broke free Tuesday from the Antarctic ice that had trapped them off the continent´s coast. Cracks in the ice allowed the Russian research ship Akademik Shokalskiy to escape the ice field where it had been stranded for two weeks, Australia´s Maritime Safety Authority said. The Chinese icebreaker Xue Long, which had gotten stuck in the ice during an attempt to extract the Russian ship, broke free about an hour later, officials said. As the saga of the Affordable Care Act continues, another mammoth program being pushed by the Department of Education for approval by all state legislatures is a national curriculum, which is called Common Core State Standards.(Snip)CCSS expedites the process of making government schools a vehicle for propagandizing students. The centralized government would be able to "teach" moral relativism, fairness, political correctness, multiculturalism, tolerance for the progressive agenda and bigotry for the traditional moral values. Barack Obama is either the most inept president ever to sit in the White House or he is an enemy of the Republic. For the last 10 years, I have watched this man´s uncanny rise to the pinnacle of power and vacillated between those two choices. I have come to the conclusion that ideology trumps inexperience. His ego is so massive, and his leftist beliefs so strong, that he is willing to throw our country under the big international bus. Let´s review our Middle East policy since Obama took office. PASCO COUNTY -- Detectives in Pasco County have made an arrest in the home invasion shooting that happened on Friday. They say 18-year-old Ryan Mills was taken into custody after finishing treatment at Bayonet Hospital for gunshot wounds he suffered during that armed robbery. Detectives say Mills and another man busted into a Land O´ Lakes home brandishing a fake gun. Turns out, someone in that home had a real gun and opened fire on the two men, shooting them both. The sheriff´s office is still investigating the incident and tells us the other suspect will be arrested once he is released from the hospital.

FBI plan puts our privacy at risk

We live in an age of surveillance. Right now, more information about us is available to more entities faster and easier than ever before. The FBI has been floating a plan to require all client-side communications software — be it voice, video, or text — to include mandatory backdoors that can be activated by law enforcement bodies to silently eavesdrop on any traffic coming in or out of that program. This will allow authorities to circumvent message-level encryption, which has stymied their current efforts.

MADISON, Wis.--Another year, another campaign. Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker is gearing up for re-election next year, his third race in four years. But the Republican’s courting of out-of-state donors and conservatives, his plans to visit Iowa this week and his refusal to say whether he would serve out another full term if elected suggest he might be seeking a much bigger prize — the presidency. Not that he will openly acknowledge as much.

Casual marijuana use may come with some not-so-casual side effects. For the first time ever, researchers at Northwestern University have analyzed the relationship between casual use of marijuana and brain changes – and found that young adults who used cannabis just once or twice a week showed significant abnormalities in two important brain structures. The study’s findings, to be published Wednesday in the Journal of Neuroscience, are similar to those of past research linking chronic, long-term marijuana use with mental illness and changes in brain development. Dr. Hans Breiter, co-senior study author, said he was inspired to look at the effects of casual

Look, everyone loves Sean Connery, particularly Sean Connery. That’s why he plays Sean Connery in every movie he’s in. People love that Scottish brogue so much, they don’t mind that he has it when he plays Juan Sánchez Villa-Lobos Ramírez, an immortal Spaniard in Highlander. The guy even won an Oscar for playing an Irish cop with a Scottish accent. Talk about sexist double standards: Meryl Streep has to master foreign dialects to get her golden statuettes. Connery just has to show up on time. In economics you devalue a currency by printing too much of it. In film you

Toddlers show racial bias when picking playmates, a study reveals. They also take account of how fairly others behave. Researchers tested the reaction of white 15-month-olds as toys were distributed. Two white adults divided the toys, one equally and the other unequally. Seventy per cent of the toddlers chose to play with the researcher who distributed the toys fairly. But in a second test, when one researcher favoured a white recipient over an Asian one, they picked the ‘fair’ researcher less often, the journal Frontiers in Psychology reports. And the babies are more likely to help those who share the same ethnicity, which is known as

How do you ensure that you won’t be ostracized, denounced, or fired if you are a media celebrity, captain of industry, or high public official? For some, sexist banter is certainly no problem. Stand-up comedian Bill Maher called Sarah Palin a c–t and a tw-t, but suffered no ill consequences. David Letterman joked on air that Sarah Palin’s 14-year-old daughter had had sex with Alex Rodriguez during a New York Yankees game. There was no downside to that either. President Obama tosses around “sweetie” as he wishes. No problem with that. No one believes Barack could be condescending to women.

With Easter soon approaching, the Rev. Al Sharpton on Wednesday drew parallels between the resurrection of Jesus Christ and the resurrection of President Obama’s political career. Joining the “Tom Joyner Morning Show,” Mr. Sharpton said that his message for this Easter is that “no matter what the world may do to you unfairly, no matter how you’re crucified — nailed to the cross at home, or in your personal relationships, or on the job — that you can rise if you don’t lose yourself during the hard times and the challenges.” The reverend went on to say that Christ endured so much humiliation and unearned suffering leading up to his death,
