Obama serves up one-liners
at Gridiron Club dinner

WASHINGTON – President Obama served up a steady course of one-liners at the Gridiron Club dinner Saturday night, a storied song-and-joke fest attended by Washington’s political power brokers and the journalists who cover them, providing a timely stage for the White House´s new charm offensive. “Because of ´sequester,´ they cut my tails," quipped Obama, the headline guest at the 128th annual event, a white-tie affair that pokes fun at official Washington. "There is one thing in Washington that didn’t get cut: The length of this dinner. Yet more proof that the sequester makes no sense.”

...after being witness to the last four years of the love affair that exists between the press and this adminstration, I find it a bit distasteful to hear of the jocular good time had with "Washington´s politcal power brokers and the journalists that who cover them", or should we say, cover FOR them...

These dinners illustrate that one of the main reasons that the press fawns over Obama is that they´re mainly the dweebs you remember from the high school pep club who desperately wanted to be included in the in crowd with the cool kids.

These dinners don´t just give the appearance of impropriety, they are completely and totally inappropriate.
However, they do reveal the symbiotic relationship that exists within the only industry in Washington, DC: politics.

During his Wednesday appearance on Jay Leno´s "Tonight Show,´ President Obama made three factual gaffes; one of them involved the claim that cities not found along the Gulf of Mexico are. Were Obama a Republican, these gaffes would have led news coverage for the next forty-eight hours. Not only did most of the media ignore or downplay these gaffes; the Associated Press went so far as to cover one of them up. In its coverage Thursday, rather than point out the president´s geographical error, the wire service made it look as though no error was made.

I’m sure there’s a logical explanation for the sudden, mysterious appearance at the site of a car accident in Missouri of a priest who prayed with the teenage victim of the wreck, comforting the youngster and the responders until it became possible to rescue her. Despite the fact that the police had blocked the highway for three miles in each direction and weren’t letting anyone through and that none of the 80 pictures taken at the scene by the rescuers showed the priest in any of them, there’s an easy explanation for the priest’s presence that we’re all missing, right? The Washington Post is a legend in the minds of the Washington elite, so its financial decline has caused quiet panic. As NPR media reporter David Folkenflik put it, “You think of stories like the Pentagon Papers, Watergate, these are all stories where The Washington Post led the nation’s understanding, the world’s understanding of some major issues.” Outside the liberal media, you wonder how long Post fans can wallow in their Nixon-crumbling polyester “glory days” in the early 1970s. But nostalgia ruled as the Graham family sold the Post to Jeff Bezos, the billionaire founder of Amazon.com.
