Mayor Bloomberg yesterday put his foot in his mouth by suggesting homeless shelters are bursting at the seams because anyone can get a bed — even the filthy rich. “You can arrive in your private jet at Kennedy Airport, take a private limousine and go straight to the shelter system, walk in the door, and we’ve got to give you shelter,” the billionaire mayor fumed on his weekly WOR radio show. “That’s what the law is. I doubt you have a lot of rich people "itching" to get into a shelter and getting infested with bed bugs.
But there is a real problem with rich people in NY getting HUD subsidies which should be stopped instead of WH tours being cancelled.
You might still have rent controls in NY which probably means landlords are gouging the hell out of HUD to make up for operational loses.
My hat´s off to anybody who dares to be a landlord in hellhole cities like NY and Chicago.Even worse is the maintenance people that have to go unclog toilets that having been running on downstairs tenants for weeks.

While I dislike Mayor Bloomberg intensely, in this case, I think his hyperbole fits. After reading the article, it is apparent that he is correct. He was not saying that anyone was doing it (driving up in a private limo to stay in a homeless shelter), just that they could, and the shelter would have to accept them. There are lots of people who could afford their own shelter but would rather live in a homeless shelter and spend their money on other things.

From what I have been reading #1, the limo elites can go to the best hotels in the city for their infestation of bedbugs. It´s not just the shelters anymore.
According to something I read in January, that NYC is at, or near, the top of the list in terms of infested hotels. In the words of the Church Lady, ´Isn´t that special?´

The unemployment rate, because of a terrible statistic, is down to 7.6%. The number of people in this country who are not working is shameful. Ninety million Americans are no longer in the workforce. Ninety million. People not in the labor force grew by 663,000, and now 90 million. That´s the labor force participation rate. This is 1979 levels.
