With canceled tours, White House teaching how democracy works

| The White House tour is a civics lesson on American democracy. And starting Saturday, when 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. shuts its doors to the public, that lesson will focus on the dysfunctional state of the union. The Obama administration announced this week that it would indefinitely suspend all tours of the president’s residence to help the nation cope with $85 billion in mandatory across-the-board budget cuts known as the sequester. Across the country, parents and students preparing for spring-break trips to Washington were aghast. Kids very bummed out,”

Obama´s mother-in-law has complained about these outsiders for over 4 years. She finally had Michelle tell Barry that if these tours didn´t end, that M-in-L was gonna go back to Chicago. If she left, Obama would have to spend his time talking to the Mooch. So, the tours are over for at least 46 months.

No, no lesson in civics. If it was a lesson in civics then as a public servant he would give up his 15 to 20 taxpayer paid for excessive/expensive vacations a year in order for the people to have access to the White House. Public servant....elected official, not KING, not dictator, not communist leader although he is actions definitely would lead the majority of us to believe he is a dictator, communist leader and King.

I agree with #2. Only a fishwrap like the Post would brand this as "teaching hoe democracy works".
First, the reporting is laughable. It was the Secret Service´s decision! Sorry, the Secret Service makes no such decisions. They go where they are instructed.
Just listen to the smug recording on the White House Tour message line. "Due to the sequester cuts, tours have been cancelled". Really, when have you EVER heard such a BS line in your life. Even the woman saying it sounds like a little arrogant witch. And I don´t really mean witch if you catch my drift.
There is no way that there is suddenly "not enough money" to prevent access to the People´s house. Not to mention the fact that several popular figures have offered to find the tours; if this was really a money problem, the Administration would have no problem accepting that cash from private donors.
What an f-ing con job. Never in my life have I seen anything like this, or even imagined it.

Shame on You Barack Obama! You care more about ideology than people and the people are now finding that out.

From everything I know, we do not have a "democracy", but rather a democratic republic (or Constitutional Republic). Leave it to "Democrats" to insist on using the word "democracy". Am I being too picky?

Do you understand what he is doing? I don´t buy that all of sudden he is getting along with the Republicans. This is his attempt to start with the young minds. When he cancels tours like this, the children go away blaming the sequester and the people who "took the money away".
I hope the Republicans remain smart about this and recognize that Obama has a goal in mind and that is 2014. They have to recognize that Obama is going to be very sly about his motives. His first two years should be an example. That is why we have Obamacare. Republicans must be vigilant.

I really don´t think the public understands this. They don´t understand what "sequester" means. They don´t understand that the money that ran this government, including the tours and the border control people, is still there. ALL the policies (except, perhaps obamcare)that have run for the last few years, should continue to run. THAT money was untouched. It is the increase in spending that was diminished. And I have not met one person who understands that. Have you?

I guess the MSM doesn´t consider the money of conservative speakers, to be as good as that of libs. WHo by the way have been too busy mourning a heinous dictator to offer their ill-gotten gains to serve the American public.

Cut the Fed Budget? Well I´ll close the White House to tours, cancel fly overs at sporting events, and now lay off 60,000 Border Agents, I´ll show you, we´ll get rid of things you care about, and things that make you proud of this country.

With the Choomster-In-Chief squatting in the White House, some poor public servant has to have been tasked with covering the crack and marijuana fumes coming from the residence. If the public is kept out-that problem is solved. Wow! Are we going to save money on incense and Glade spray!

Anything to this administration is used for political gain no matter the cost. He´s using the children this time, Benghazi was covered up due to the election. People are falling for his tactics over and over again. Disgusting. The low info voter is just an excuse - there are ways of finding out both sides. As someone pointed out the other day that when there is a problem, the president disappears and the press covers for him.

Throwing the BS Flag!
The tours are run by volunteers. So the WH original story that tours were cancelled did not save any money.
BS
Next the White House said the Secret Service Officers were needed so not having tours would save money. But - only terminating the Secret Service employees would actually save money.
BS
Next the White House came back saying all this was done on Overtime. So, if all were on overtime - the Manager needs to be fired for not having enough staff to meet regular needs.
BS.

I was doing a little reading on Andrew Jackson and noted these similarities and contrasts with the current president:
Andrew Jackson believed the White House to be the People´s House, even opening it to the public for his inauguration ball. (The public, in turn, trashed the W.H. and were coaxed to leave by servants hauling punch out to the lawn in tubs.)
A.J. first president born in a log cabin. B.O. first president born in an African grass hut.
A.J. presided over a celebration of retiring the national debt. B.O. presided over the largest national debt increase in world history.
A.J. was labeled by his opponents as King Andrew I. B.O. is King Barack.
A.J.´s followers formed the Democrat Party. B.O.´s followers transformed the Democrat Party.
A.J.´s opponents called him a jackass. A.J. adopted this title and later it became the symbol of the Democrat Party. B.O. is the mascot of the Democrat Party.
A.J. became the only president censured by the Congress. (When the Dems later retook the Senate, they expunged that from the record.) B.O. .....will hopefully be the second.
A.J. became known as Old Hickory. B.O. is becoming known as Old Bicker-y.

Democratic Party officials believe that Kevin Strouse is exactly the kind of candidate who can help them retake the House next year. He’s a smart, young former Army Ranger — good qualities for any aspiring politician. But what party leaders really like is that Strouse doesn’t have particularly strong views on the country’s hottest issues. Immigration? Tax policy? “Certainly I have a lot of research to do,” Strouse acknowledged in an interview Thursday as he announced his candidacy in a suburban Philadelphia House district. Strouse’s candidacy reflects an emerging

Put out an all-points bulletin: Millions of Americans have gone missing from the workforce. Every month that those would-be workers are gone raises the odds that they might never come back, dimming the prospects for future economic growth. The vanishing trend is more than a decade old, but it accelerated during the Great Recession. Throughout 2012, economists held out hope that it had stopped. But then came Friday’s jobs report, and hopes were dashed. The Labor Department reported that the U.S. labor force — everyone who has a job or is looking for one — shrank

Well, not intentionally. But Jim Ragsdale of the Minneapolis Star Tribune attended a conference in Chicago on covering gun issues, which he describes this way: “Covering Guns” brought reporters with front-line experience covering mass shootings in Tucson, Ariz.; Aurora, Colo.; Newtown, Conn., and Red Lake, Minn., to meet with gun experts and advocates and gun trainers. Sponsored by the Poynter journalism center and funded by the McCormick Foundation of Chicago, we gathered in a city that witnessed 506 homicides last year. The idea, I take it

Carbon emissions in the US were at their lowest level in 2012 since 1994, according to figures released by the US Energy Information Administration. We did it without carbon trading scams, the EPA making carbon dioxide a poison, or obeying the dictates of the Kyoto climate Treaty. We did it partly because of decreased economic activity as a result of the Obama recovery-that-isn’t, but mostly because of good old fashioned market forces; competition between natural gas and coal: Energy-related carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in 2012 were the lowest in the United States since 1994

When I tell campus horror-stories like “What’s the Matter With Vassar?” people ask if parents know what’s going on at these schools. I don’t think they want to know. But guess what happens when protesters step on others’ rights in full view of parents? Tufts has one of the most active campus fossil-fuel divestment groups. Lately these protesters have been infiltrating orientation sessions and campus tours for prospective students, mostly high school juniors traveling with their parents. Climate protesters interrupt these recruitment activities with questions

It is amazing just how wrong economists were in their predictions for the number of jobs that were to be created in March. The “consensus” figure was 200,000 — a far cry from the actual number created which was 88,000. Totally “unexpected,” as usual. In one way, you can’t blame them. After a better than average gain in February of 236,000 (revised upward this month to 268,000), along with some positive numbers in housing and consumer spending, there were no doubt many analysts who began breathing a sigh of relief and believing that the long-awaited jobs recovery was upon us.

Rich Lowery in the New York Post (4-02-2013) accuses the liberals of being the new climate deniers, considering that they don´t recognize that there´s been no global warming for the last fifteen years. This shouldn´t surprise Lowery. When the liberals hang onto the neck of a cause, they don´t let go. They have ignored murders, rapes, wars, nuclear proliferation, and everything wrong with the world to focus in on their little area -- the horror of carbon emissions. You´d think liberals would have learned from their earlier panic about overpopulation

President Obama will propose a budget next week that embraces a risky strategy of courting Republicans for a grand bargain on the debt while angering Democratic allies with cuts to the nation’s entitlement programs. White House officials said Friday that Obama’s budget would cut Medicare and Social Security and ask for less tax revenue than he has previously sought. The budget, to be released Wednesday, will fully incorporate the offer Obama made to House Speaker John A. Boehner (R-Ohio) during December’s “fiscal cliff” talks — which included $1.8 trillion in deficit reduction through spending cuts and tax increases.

President Obama´s biggest gaffe yesterday when speaking of California Attorney General Kamala Harris was not in flirtatiously complimenting her as "the best-looking attorney general," but in introducing an observation from the system of beauty into a forum that was about the system of power. What´s that, you say? Irin Carmon does a great job in Salon in laying out the bounds of propriety for when it´s appropriate to talk about a woman´s looks as a general matter. But I´ve long felt we lack a solid theoretical underpinning for easily discussing these issues, and why precisely it is that

The Obama White House is scrambling to blame Friday’s abysmal March jobs numbers on the sequester’s trimming of the rate of growth in federal budgets that have yet to fully commence. After the Labor Department announced that a mass exodus of 663,000 workers left the U.S. workforce last month and that job creation fell 112,000 jobs short of projections, Obama’s top economic adviser Alan B. Krueger, took to the White House blog to blame the sequester: It is important to bear in mind that the March household and payroll surveys are the first monthly surveys to look

On Friday, Sean Hannity brought Pat Smith, mother of the late Sean Smith, on his radio program. The 34-year-old information management officer was one of four Americans murdered in the Benghazi embassy attack on September 11, 2012.
