Conservationists win landmark High
Court victory against wind farm

Telegraph [UK], by Sam Marsden

Conservationists today won a landmark High Court battle against plans for a giant wind farm that would have blighted one of the most important surviving Elizabethan gardens in England. A judge ruled that a planning inspector made a “flawed” decision to give the go-ahead to plans for four 415ft turbines on farmland just a mile from Lyveden New Bield, a Grade I listed National Trust property. English Heritage and the National Trust, who backed the legal challenge to the development, said the case had national implications. East Northamptonshire District Council had sought to block proposals submitted by West

New US drone strikes reportedly killed seven alleged al-Qaida members in southern Yemen on Wednesday after the government in Sana´a claimed to have foiled a large-scale terrorist attack and the US and Britain evacuated their embassy staff. Security officials told the Associated Press (AP) the latest drone attacks hit targets in Shabwa province, where residents reported seeing two vehicles and several bodies on fire. The news came as details emerged in the capital of an ambitious plan by the group al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), a "franchise" of the global terrorist network, to attack installations and towns.

Hope, a three-week-old Shih Tzu, was rejected by her natural mother, Diamond, after being born alongside a stillborn sibling. But the puppy has found a new mum in feline Coco - who gave birth to a litter of three kittens on the same day as Hope was born. Loving Coco treats Hope like one of her own - and even feeds her. Coco´s owner Paula Ball, of Liverpool, persuaded partner David Cohen, who owns Diamond, to introduce the pair. ´I suggested it because there was no other option - the puppy wouldn´t have survived otherwise,´ she said.

A Republican candidate running for a state Senate seat in Maine has been forced to defend amusing video footage of himself dancing around in Speedos to Samba music. Eric Brakey, 24, has been attacked by Mike Hein, a former employee of the Christian Civic League, who circulated the video and described Brakey as looking like ´a demon possessed.´ But Brakey laughed off the jibes on Tuesday, pointing to his past as a professional actor and saying that the outtake was from ´comedy piece´ commercial for a soft drink made in 2011. ´It shows that I´m a full human being

When we look for the ideal holiday destination, one of the most important factors must surely be what sort of welcome we are likely to receive from the locals. So travellers will be delighted by a new list which ranks the friendliest cities in the world--as well as naming and shaming the least friendly. It turns out that the most welcoming places are in famously chilled-out countries such as Brazil, Australia and the mountain kingdom of Bhutan. By contrast, the U.S. dominated the list of the least friendly cities, along with Africa and the Middle East, with Newark, New Jersey

The Obama administration has been accused of behaving ´like a bunch of cowards´ after 19 embassies were closed in the wake of the Al Qaeda terror alert. Louis Gohmert, a Republican congressman from Texas, recalled the September 11, 2012 terror attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya. Clinton famously suggested in a Senate hearing that it was largely irrelevant whether the attack was the result of a terrorist plot or--as the administration initially claimed--an outgrowth of a spontaneous anti-U.S. protest. SPARTANBURG, S.C. - State Sen. Lee Bright has brought his campaign website online as he considers a Republican primary challenge against U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham next year. The website asks people to sign up for Bright’s newsletter, promising to send them a video announcement the moment he decides to run against Graham. It includes the slogan: “Bright. For Liberty. For Senate.” The Roebuck lawmaker says he is waiting to see how the field shapes up before making his formal announcement. Bright was elected to the Senate in 2008. Why al-Qaeda in Yemen

Whatever plot the US eavesdroppers overheard the top two al-Qaeda leaders discussing clearly rattled the US intelligence community so badly that Washington shut 19 of its diplomatic missions around the Middle East, Asia and Africa. In the Yemeni capital, Sanaa, where the threat of attack is considered greatest, the UK, France and Germany have also shut their embassies. The British embassy has emptied completely, with all remaining British staff leaving the country on Tuesday, while the US air force flew out American personnel. So just what is it about al-Qaeda´s branch in Yemen that triggers such warning bells in Washington?

The Pentagon has placed its elite cadre of special operations teams on full alert to launch preemptive attacks against suspected al Qaeda targets across the globe, according to reports. The American special forces teams have spent the past week waiting for U.S. military and intelligence officials to confirm the whereabouts of the terror cell plotting to attack U.S. diplomatic outposts in the Mideast and North Africa. WASHINGTON — U.S. officials insisted Tuesday that extraordinary security measures for nearly two dozen diplomatic posts were to thwart an “immediate, specific threat,” a claim questioned by counterterrorism experts, who note that the alert covers an incongruous set of nations from the Middle East to an island off the southern coast of Africa. Analysts don’t dispute the Obama administration’s narrative that it’s gleaned intelligence on a plot involving al Qaida’s most active affiliate, the Yemen-based Arabian Peninsula branch. That would explain why most U.S. posts in the Persian Gulf are on lockdown, including the U.
