RALEIGH, N.C. - Insurance giant MetLife Inc. said Thursday it will move 2,600 jobs from offices in four Northeast states and California to lower-cost locations in two North Carolina cities, while also getting tax breaks and other incentives that could reach $100 million. The insurer is shifting the jobs from Lowell and Boston, Mass.; Somerset, N.J.; Bloomfield, Conn.; Johnstown, Pa.; Warwick, R.I.; and Aliso Viejo and Irvine, Calif., MetLife spokesman John Calagna said. The positions will be consolidated in Charlotte, which will become the U.S. headquarters for MetLife´s retail business,

The trouble is, when enough people from blue states move to red states, they end up changing the demographics and voting patterns of the state they move to.

I wonder why all the jobs are going south and not consolidating in business friendly states like Mass, NY and Conn. . . . ?

Thankfully, our new Republican governor will hopefully see that this is just the beginning! Now, if only some of those jobs would come to coastal NC!

Now 2,600 Progressives in NO.CA. will move to NC. Good luck with that N.C. Feel for you. I remember when CA. was a conservative state, I´m that old.

Met life says 2600 jobs not 2600 current job holders will be moved.
Son´s employer just moved 100 jobs but only 25 employees. Thankfully he was the first asked to go-- same state different location.

I don´t consider Charlotte to be in the south. It´s kind of a liberal enclave within the conservative south, much like Vatican City is a Catholic enclave within increasingly secular Italy.

OTOH, if you move from a high-cost-of-living state to a low one but keep your salary, in effect you´ve gotten a raise.

ATTLEBORO, Mass. — As many as 25 students at a Massachusetts school were denied lunch this week — with at least some forced to dump their food in the garbage — because they couldn´t pay, school officials and parents said. Outraged parents said some students at Coelho Middle School in Attleboro cried when they were told by a worker for the district´s food service provider they could not eat on Tuesday because they couldn´t pay or their pre-paid accounts were short on funds. The on-site director for the company, Whitsons Culinary Group of Islandia, N.Y., was placed on administrative leave by

This story was co-produced with NPR. Imagine filing your income taxes in five minutes — and for free. You´d open up a pre-filled return, see what the government thinks you owe, make any needed changes and be done. The miserable annual IRS shuffle, gone. It´s already a reality in Denmark, Sweden and Spain. The government-prepared return would estimate your taxes using information your employer and bank already send it. Advocates say tens of millions of taxpayers could use such a system each year, saving them a collective $2 billion and 225 million hours in prep costs and time, according to one estimate.

OAKLAND, Calif. — In recent months, journalists covering crime and other stories here have themselves become victims of crime, robbed of expensive cameras, sometimes at gunpoint. In less than a year, every major television news station in the Bay Area has been a victim, some more than once. One experienced newspaper photographer has lost five cameras. In the most brazen episode, a group of men punched a KPIX-TV cameraman last November while he was filming at midday in front of an Oakland high school. The robbers fled with his camera while it was still recording.

Sacramento — In his seven-year career with the Denver Broncos, running back Terrell Davis, a former Super Bowl Most Valuable Player, dazzled fans with his speed and elusiveness. At the end of his rookie year in 1995, he signed a $6.8-million, five-year contract. Off the field he endorsed Campbell´s soup. And when he hung up his cleats, he reported for the National Football League Network and appeared in movies and TV shows. So it may surprise Californians to find out that in 2011, Davis got a $199,000 injury settlement from a California workers´ compensation court for injuries related to football.

It wasn’t flashy or filled with special effects, but Dodge Ram’s Super Bowl commercial that featured the late radio broadcaster Paul Harvey’s tribute to U.S. farmers might have won the hearts and minds of viewers Sunday night. The two-minute spot featured a series of stark photos of farmers at work. Along with a montage of still images, Harvey’s distinctive voice delivers the narration: his “So God Made a Farmer” speech, which he gave in 1978 at the National Future Farmers of America Convention. He died in 2009 at age 90. Ram commissioned 10 noted photographers, including National Geographic icon

For more than three decades, Chinese women have been subjected to their country´s brutal one-child policy. Those who try to have more children have been subjected to fines and forced abortions. Their houses have been razed and their husbands fired from their jobs. As a result, Chinese women have a fertility rate of 1.54. Here in America, white, college-educated women—a good proxy for the middle class—have a fertility rate of 1.6. America has its very own one-child policy. And we have chosen it for ourselves. Forget the debt ceiling. Forget the fiscal cliff, the sequestration cliff and the entitlement cliff.

The Grapevine section of Interstate 5, the key artery linking southern and northern California, was shut down Thursday night. Police said the closure would remain in effect overnight and the roadway would be re-evaluated in the morning. The day saw several accidents and spinouts on the mountain pass that led to

California has millions more guns than it did 10 years ago. It also has thousands fewer gun injuries and deaths each year. Those are two simple facts that, depending on whom you ask, have everything or nothing to do with each other. Last month´s horrific Connecticut school shooting has reignited the debate over gun control in California, a state with some of the nation´s strictest gun laws. State legislators will likely take up additional gun law proposals later this year, ranging from further limits on ammunition purchases to requiring regular background checks for gun owners. Gov. Jerry Brown and California lawmakers struck an upbeat tone in recent weeks as they enjoyed their most positive budget outlook since the economic downturn. Whether that mood survives the winter depends on Washington. State budget experts say the biggest immediate threat to California finances is a recession triggered by automatic federal cuts and tax hikes, absent a political deal to avoid the so-called "fiscal cliff." The state´s biggest federal program, Medi-Cal, is spared from automatic cuts. But a new recession could threaten the state tax revenue that serves as the lifeblood for California government. President Obama´s biggest gaffe yesterday when speaking of California Attorney General Kamala Harris was not in flirtatiously complimenting her as "the best-looking attorney general," but in introducing an observation from the system of beauty into a forum that was about the system of power. What´s that, you say? Irin Carmon does a great job in Salon in laying out the bounds of propriety for when it´s appropriate to talk about a woman´s looks as a general matter. Put out an all-points bulletin: Millions of Americans have gone missing from the workforce. Every month that those would-be workers are gone raises the odds that they might never come back, dimming the prospects for future economic growth. The vanishing trend is more than a decade old, but it accelerated during the Great Recession. Throughout 2012, economists held out hope that it had stopped. But then came Friday’s jobs report, and hopes were dashed. The Labor Department reported that the U.S. labor force — everyone who has a job or is looking for one — shrank
