| The Seattle-area intern fatally mauled by a lion at a Central California exotic animal park loved lions and tigers since childhood, "was absolutely fearless" around them and hoped to work at a zoo after her six-month internship, her father said late Wednesday. "She was at ease with those big cats," Paul Hanson, a Seattle-area attorney, said of his daughter, Dianna Hanson, 24. "They liked her."

Comments: A sad story, but this young woman was apparently complacent around a wild animal. She was not supposed to be inside the enclosure and she knew that. Unfortunately, she was killed, and unfortunately, so was the lion.

A wild animal is always a wild animal. Even domestic animals can be potentially dangerous. A bull, stallion or boar must always be treated with caution and respect; a cow, mare or sow with young, as well. On the farm we never forget that these animals react by instinct for a reason and never take them for granted. Unfortunately, too many people assume Disney and Old MacDonald portray reality. Sadly, the lion paid with his life for just being a lion, the young lady, for being ignorant or complacent.

Sorry for her death. Lions, tigers are beautiful animals. Love to watch them on TV! They are wild animals. I think people forget to respect this fact. The lion thought she was a tasty morsel. It´s a lion thing. Foolish girl.

..uh, lions don´t ´like´ people. My heart goes out to that poor girl and her family, but I amfrever amazed at the way young people today feel the need to ´connect´ with wild animals. It´s as if they go and hug them, it means they care about their plight or something. Our popular culture (popular LIBERAL culture) also tries to humanize these animals to the point that they are intellectual, feeling, thinking beings who would somehow know a human is trying to help them. Like the nam says...great to watch on TV and even in the wild, but I´ll keep my distance, a great distance.

Like Dawn Brancheau´s Sea World tragedy a few years ago, the love of these trainers and interns too often blinds them to the real danger that wild animals present. Overconfidence can be fatal. Tragic, nonetheless.

The VP of the Humane Society said "These are big cats that are extremely dangerous, and they placed a volunteer in the actual cage with a wild animal," she said. "That should have never happened."
I don´t think "they placed a volunteer in the actual cage" -- it´s unclear why she was in the enclosure. The zoo has a good reputation and the young woman knew she wasn´t supposed to be in there. She could only know that if she was told that by her employer.

I used to do volunteer office work at a wild animal sanctuary. I always had a healthy respect for wild animals, but after a few months, I had abject terror of them. They are so changeable and it doesn´t take much at all to make them "go wild" on each other. I shudder to think about them going wild on a human. BTW - the sanctuary where I worked had a hard and fast rule - no people in the cages.

"The USDA enforces the federal Animal Welfare Act and hopes to learn whether the 4-year-old lion that killed 24-year-old Dianna Hanson showed any behavior prior to the attack that might have indicated potential danger.
"Fresno County sheriff´s investigators and the state Department of Fish and Wildlife want to know why Hanson was in the enclosure with the animal."
POP QUIZ:
One of the organizations listed above is directed by clueless idiots. Which one is it?
1. The USDA 2. The Fresno County sheriff´s office
ANSWER:
Number one, the USDA.
African lions are among the largest and most dangerous predators on earth. They have been known to attack, seriously injure and kill humans, sometimes without apparent provocation. Experts are generally agreed that entering a cage with such powerful and unpredictable carnivores should never be attempted unless special precautions are in place. Entering their cage alone and unarmed with no one standing by in case of trouble is strongly discouraged by those familiar with these animals and is attended by a significant risk of death or serious injury.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR PUBLIC SCHOOL TEACHERS AND TEST GRADERS:
All students are allowed three(3)tries to get the correct answer and pass the test. Practice sessions are permitted. Teachers may offer assistance to students who have difficulty mastering the material as long as they do not provide the answer for the student or alter the student´s answer. Minority students who are unable to pass the test after three attempts, coaching, practice sessions and teacher assistance may submit a letter of reference from a responsible adult or provide proof of community volunteer work in lieu of their testing requirement.

As the first person ever trained in college as a Zoo Keeper/Curator my take on this folly is: This person was an idiot.
You never ever enter a cage or compound with a full grown lion, or for that matter any other large predator without them being sent to the holding area.
Even a 6 month old lion will tear you up just for fun. Number one, you always face the animal so they see your eyes. Number two, they want to eat you just for invading their space. Number three, where was the real zookeeper, this person is responsible for the intern losing her life.

She´d only been there since January. An eager beaver who thought she knew more than those who know these animals and respect them.

There was a main locked enclosure where the lion lived and roamed and a locked enclosure where its food would be placed. The attendants placed food in the small enclosure, left and locked it, and only then was the lion allowed in to feed. They apparently had some mechanism for getting the lion back into the main enclosure after feeding.
This young woman was not authorized to enter either enclosure.

Her father said the cats "liked her". I agree. THAT´S WHY IT KILLED HER AND TRIED TO EAT HER!
It was a wild animal with the nature of a wild animal. These are the same people who are surprised when a bull dog ,bred for centuries to fight, kills a toddler.("well, it was the first time it ever bit anyone!")

The lion apparently broke her neck with a paw swipe. Her wounds were post-mortem.
From that article:
Hanson said his daughter had worked with big cats before but told him she would not be allowed to go into the lion cage.
On Wednesday, deputies found the woman severely injured and still lying inside the enclosure with the 4-year-old male African lion nearby, said Fresno County sheriff´s Lt. Bob Miller.
Another park worker couldn´t lure the lion into another pen, so deputies shot and killed it to safely reach the wounded woman, but she died at the scene, he said.

ObamaCare is being implemented, having been upheld as constitutional by the Supreme Court in June in a series of cases now known as National Federation of Independent Business v. HHS. It is becoming increasingly clear, however, that the court took a law that was flawed but potentially workable and transformed it into one that is almost certainly unworkable. More important, the justices also may have created new and fatal constitutional problems.

Michelle Obama has admitted that she is already tired of the bangs she first sported in January. The First Lady said in an interview with Entertainment Tonight: ´Bangs are a day-by-day proposition. They´re starting to grow out, get a little irritating.´ Still, she hasn´t let her hairdo woes get her down. ´It´s okay,´ she said after her initial complaint. ´We´ll be good.´ The first indication that her hairstyle was becoming a burden came about last weekend, when Malia, 14, was spotted adjusting her mother´s hair during the White House Easter Egg Roll.

Recent research indicates that the number of people who do not consider themselves a part of an organized religion is steadily on the rise. Interestingly enough, though the number of those religiously unaffiliated is increasing, there is little to no trend in the number of those who express atheist or agnostic beliefs. People aren’t saying they don’t believe in God. They’re saying they don’t believe in religion. They are not rejecting Christ. They are rejecting the church. This begs the question, “Why are we losing our religion?”

They´re tired of $100-plus monthly bills. A growing number of them have stopped paying for cable and satellite TV service, and don´t even use an antenna to get free signals over the air. Put out an all-points bulletin: Millions of Americans have gone missing from the workforce. Every month that those would-be workers are gone raises the odds that they might never come back, dimming the prospects for future economic growth. The vanishing trend is more than a decade old, but it accelerated during the Great Recession. Throughout 2012, economists held out hope that it had stopped. But then came Friday’s jobs report, and hopes were dashed. The Labor Department reported that the U.S. labor force — everyone who has a job or is looking for one — shrank

Gluten-free diets are all the rage, but they can be dangerous if not done right. What is gluten? It´s the spongy complex of proteins, found naturally in wheat, rye, and barley, that gives elasticity to dough and allows it to rise. When flour is moistened and either kneaded or mixed into dough, gluten molecules form an elastic, microscopic latticework that traps the carbon dioxide produced when yeast ferments, causing dough to inflate like a hot air balloon. Baking hardens the gluten, which helps the finished product keep its shape. Wheat — and gluten — is ubiquitous in the American diet.

Newtown killer Adam Lanza may have launched his murder spree at Sandy Hook Elementary School as an “act of revenge,” the Daily News has learned. A close friend of Lanza’s mother told The News that the troubled boy was a target of relentless bullying when he attended the Connecticut school years ago. “I think Adam felt betrayed by the school and this was his act of revenge,” said Marvin LaFontaine, a friend of Nancy Lanza’s. “Nancy told me he was being picked on at school. That they were just torturing him.” Source and text corrected by Staff.
