Americans speak every language,
but only English unites us

Boston Globe, by Jeff Jacoby

Gabriel Gomez, one of three Republicans vying for the US Senate seat vacated by John Kerry, speaks Spanish like a native and seems intent on making sure every voter knows it. The Cohasset businessman, a former Navy SEAL commander, announced his candidacy last month in an online video that opened in Spanish: “Me llamo Gabriel Gomez, y yo estoy anunciando que voy a correr para ser senador de los Estados Unidos.” Then he switched to English: “For those of you who don’t speak Spanish, today I’m announcing my run for US Senate.”

Reminds me of my biggest beef: Why are we spending BILLIONS teaching our Americans Spanish or any other language in large volumes????

These people from any other country should be obligated to learn English before they can fill out any form, collect any welfare, benefits or attend any of our schools!!!

Bad move, Gabe!! At least it would be in any other State than the People´s Republic of Massachusetts. It may work there. I have no objection to the Spanish language. In fact, living in the Southwest, I have more or less been forced to learn it for daily commerce. HOWEVER, the headline is absolutely right. To excel, every nation has to have a universal language, and English is ours.

The Constitution was written in English, not German. All laws are written in English. All communication in government is spoken and written in English. Courtrooms only speak in English. The Congress only speaks in English. English is the international language of business. English is the international language of aviation. I believe that English is also the fastest growing language on earth.
Gee, can´t these mult-culturist, uber-liberal,"CoEeXisT types figure it out?

I agree with Mr. Jacoby and I´m of Hispanic extraction. No language but English will unite us all as American.

If I can communicate in fluent Spanish my conservative beliefs to someone who (unfortunately) only speaks Spanish - and I can successfully convince him/her of the superiority of the conservative agenda - then I hope to have an edge in gaining that person´s trust and possibly their vote (if they are legal residents.) The idea must be to make a fully vested American citizen who respects, honors and defends this country, its traditions and the American Way.

This country should be about contributors, not freeloaders.

Jacoby is right, of course. I watched the Gomez video, and while about 90% of his announcement is in standard, fluent, well-spoken English, the opening sentence was indeed in Spanish. I´m not sure of what Gomez´s intent was. The Hispanic population of Mass. is 9.6 percent--mostly Puerto Rican, with some Mexicans, Salvadoreans, and Dominicans.

His website is entirely in English.

Fort Hood carries on after another rampage

FORT HOOD, Texas — The relaxed and professional bearing of the guards at Fort Hood´s main gate early Thursday, belied the brutal violence that had struck the Army post only hours earlier when a soldier killed three people and wounded 16 others before turning the gun on himself. Distant, howls of coyotes cut into the eerie quiet at the tragic scene, which only five years ago had suffered the worst attack on a domestic U.S. military installation in history. On Nov. 5, 2009, Army psychiatrist Nidal Hasan went on a shooting rampage that left 13 dead and 31 wounded. Parts of the

New Jersey state senator Ron Rice, a Democrat, calls it “Newark-gate.” He is referring to a state comptroller’s report that details how a contractor swindled the city out of millions in public funds, and to the larger culture of “white-collar crime” that he says former Newark mayor Cory Booker allowed to flourish on his watch. For over a month now, Rice and one of his colleagues, Republican state senator Sam Thompson, have been calling for the New Jersey Legislative Select Committee on Investigation, which is currently investigating the Bridgegate scandal, to look into the “government abuses of power and cover-ups” they

Former CIA deputy director Mike Morell, who also served a stint as acting director of Langley, is testifying before House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence today. The hearing focuses on the Obama administration’s response to the September 11, 2012, terrorist attack in Benghazi, Libya. Cutting through all of the back and forth, the most important point is this: The U.S. intelligence community knew right away that al Qaeda was involved in the attack. “The analysts said from the get-go that al Qaeda was involved in this attack,” Morell said. The former CIA man was asked why, then, was “al Qaeda” edited out

The numbers are still coming in on the Affordable Care Act, and that will continue for years. There will never be one number that tells the full story of the law’s impact on health care costs, the underlying economic health of the law, its effect on the federal deficit or job creation. However, recent research suggests there may a point of diminishing returns with running. A number of studies have suggested that a "moderate" running regimen -- a total of two to three hours per week, according to one expert -- appears best for longevity, refuting the typical "more is better" mantra for physical activity. The researchers behind the newest study on the issue say people who get either no exercise or high-mileage runners both tend to have shorter lifespans

Before getting to the speech itself, it’s worth noting a few things. When the Democrats passed and Barack Obama signed Obamacare, the majority opposed it. About 56%, in fact. A majority have consistently opposed that law ever since. The Obama administration touted 7 million sign-ups by March 31 as “success.” When that goal appeared to be unreachable, the administration suggested that maybe 5 or 6 million would be enough. Now, as if by magic, they have their number. Somehow. All along, the administration has touted false numbers of enrollees. A few months back, HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius stated for the record that 7 million Obamacare sign-ups by the end of March would constitute success. She was clear about it. A triumphant President Barack Obama declared his signature medical insurance overhaul a success, saying it has made America´s health care system ´a lot better.´ But buried in the 7.1 million enrollments he announced in a heavily staged Rose Garden appearance is a more unsettling reality. The former two-term governor of Florida speaks fluent Spanish, is a convert to Catholicism, and has high name recognition. Jeb could raise millions of dollars over night by just saying “yes” to running. Despite all this, there are strong reasons Republicans should say no to him. 1. His last name is poison. Let’s face it, if Jeb Bush had the last name of Something Else he would have already run for president in 2008 or 2012. According to a recent Washington Post/ABC News poll registered voters were asked if they would definitely NOT vote for Jeb Bush and 50 percent said they would not.
